Download or read book Pilot Mechanical Pulping Assessment of Dry Blue stained and Grey stage Wood Chips from Beetle killed Lodgepole Pine written by Thomas Qiuxiong Hu and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The overall goal of this project is to determine the level of dry blue-stained wood chips and the level of grey-stage wood chips that can be economically utilized by BC mechanical pulp producers. The target objectives are two-fold: (1) to determine the maximum levels of dead, dry blue-stained and grey-stage lodgepole pine that can be economically utilized in BC mechanical pulp mills without detrimentally affecting processing and product quality; and (2) to evaluate the economic feasibility of presteaming, chemical impregnation pretreatment and refiner operation options for dry blue-stained and grey-stage lodgepole pine wood chip utilization."--Document.

Book Cost Implications for Thermomechanical Pulping and Brightening of Blue stained Chips

Download or read book Cost Implications for Thermomechanical Pulping and Brightening of Blue stained Chips written by Thomas Qiuxiong Hu and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl.) forests make up approximately 35% of British Columbia's forested land base and accounty for 25% of the province's total volume harvested. Mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopk.) is currently B. C.'s most devastating forest insect and it has wrought more destruction in mature lodgepole pine forests than any other forest insect. In an attempt to deal with the pine beetle infestation, an accelerated harvesting of pine stands damaged with this insect has been ordered by B. C. Ministry of Forests throughout the north central part of the province. Mature lodgepole pine trees attacked by the pine beetle are afflicted through the introduction of Ophiostoma piliferum, a fungus that causes blue stain in the sapwood. This preliminary study was undertaken to quantify the costs associated with thermechanical and chemithermomechanical pulping and brightening the mechanical pulps produced from blue-stained and sound lodgepole pine chips.--Document.

Book Assessing the Influence of Time since death

Download or read book Assessing the Influence of Time since death written by Barbara Dalpke and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is part of a series of research papers that explore the biological, social, and economic aspects of British Columbia's mountain pine beetle (MPB) epidemic. It presents the results of pilot plant Kraft and mechanical pulping trials that were conducted to determine the influence of time-since-death (TSD) of (MPB)-killed lodgepole pine on pulping and pulp quality. Samples included trees of red, grey and late grey attack stages as well as unattacked trees; sample sites were established in three different biogeoclimatic subzones in British Columbia in order to account for natural variability. Prior to pulping, samples were tested for wood and fibre properties as well as chip quality. Kraft and thermomechanical (TMP) pulping parameters were monitored, pulp quality was determined, and sheet structure was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy.--Includes text from document.

Book The Mountain Pine Beetle

Download or read book The Mountain Pine Beetle written by Pacific Forestry Centre and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book presents a synthesis of published information on mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins [Coleoptera: Scolytidae]) biology and management with an emphasis on lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud. var. latifolia Engelm.) forests of western Canada. Intended as a reference for researchers as well as forest managers, the book covers three main subject areas: mountain pine beetle biology, management, and socioeconomic concerns. The chapters on biology cover taxonomy, life history and habits, distribution, insect-host tree interactions, development and survival, epidemiology, and outbreak history. The management section covers management strategy, survey and detection, proactive and preventive management, and decision support tools. The chapters on socioeconomic aspects include an economic examination of management programs and the utilization of post-beetle salvage timber in solid wood, panelboard, pulp and paper products."--Publisher's description.

Book Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options

Download or read book Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options written by James M. Vose and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest land managers face the challenges of preparing their forests for the impacts of climate change. However, climate change adds a new dimension to the task of developing and testing science-based management options to deal with the effects of stressors on forest ecosystems in the southern United States. The large spatial scale and complex interactions make traditional experimental approaches difficult. Yet, the current progression of climate change science offers new insights from recent syntheses, models, and experiments, providing enough information to start planning now for a future that will likely include an increase in disturbances and rapid changes in forest conditions. Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options: A Guide for Natural Resource Managers in Southern Forest Ecosystems provides a comprehensive analysis of forest management options to guide natural resource management in the face of future climate change. Topics include potential climate change impacts on wildfire, insects, diseases, and invasives, and how these in turn might affect the values of southern forests that include timber, fiber, and carbon; water quality and quantity; species and habitats; and recreation. The book also considers southern forest carbon sequestration, vulnerability to biological threats, and migration of native tree populations due to climate change. This book utilizes the most relevant science and brings together science experts and land managers from various disciplines and regions throughout the south to combine science, models, and on-the-ground experience to develop management options. Providing a link between current management actions and future management options that would anticipate a changing climate, the authors hope to ensure a broader range of options for managing southern forests and protecting their values in the future.

Download or read book Wildlife Ecotoxicology written by John E. Elliott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-27 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have now been published in the broad field of environmental toxicology. However, to date, none of have presented the often fascinating stories of the wildlife science, and the steps along the way from discovery of problems caused by environmental pollutants to the regulatory and non-regulatory efforts to address the problems. This book provides case by case examinations of how toxic chemical effects on wildlife have brought about policy and regulatory decisions, and positive changes in environmental conditions. Wild animal stories, whether they are about the disappearance of charismatic top predators, or of grossly deformed embryos or frogs, provide powerful symbols that can and have captured the public's imagination and have resulted in increased awareness by decision makers. It is the intent of this book to present factual and balanced overviews and summaries of the science and the subsequent regulatory processes that followed to effect change (or not). We cover a variety of chemicals and topics beginning with an update of the classic California coastal DDT story of eggshell thinning and avian reproduction to more recent cases, such as the veterinarian pharmaceutical that has brought three species of Asian vultures to the brink of extinction. Researchers, regulators, educators, NGOs and the general public will find valuable insights into the processes and mechanisms involved both in environmental scientific investigation and in efforts to effect positive change.
