Book Regional Peer Review Process on a Risk based Assessment Framework to Identify Priorities for Ecosystem based Oceans Management in the Pacific Region

Download or read book Regional Peer Review Process on a Risk based Assessment Framework to Identify Priorities for Ecosystem based Oceans Management in the Pacific Region written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Proceedings summarize the relevant discussions and key conclusions that resulted from a Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat (CSAS)Regional Peer Review meeting on May 8-10, 2012, at the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo, British Columbia. One working paper was presented for peer review. This paper developed an ecological risk assessment framework to identify and assess the relative risk of harm to VECsfrom human activities and their associated stressors and to rank the significance of activities and stressors based on the relative risks to VECs. In-person and web-based participation included DFO Science, Fisheries and Aquatic Management Sectors staff; and external participants from First Nations organizations, the Province of British Columbia, Environment Canada, the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the commercial fishing sector, environmental non-governmental organizations, consultants, and academia. The conclusions and advice resulting from this review will be provided in the form of a ScienceAdvisory Report to Oceans and Ecosystem Management to inform the development of conservation objectives for the Pacific North Coast Integrated Management Area (PNCIMA) and Pacific Region Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

Book Ecological Risk Assessment

Download or read book Ecological Risk Assessment written by Lawrence V. Tannenbaum and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compendium of highly purposeful studies all waiting to be conducted. It explains how avoiding common study design flaws, opportunities are created to observe that true risk assessment questions may not exist, that chemically exposed receptors are probably unharmed, and that ecological risk assessment might not be needed at all.

Book Environmental Risk Assessment and Management from a Landscape Perspective

Download or read book Environmental Risk Assessment and Management from a Landscape Perspective written by Lawrence A. Kapustka and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important guide to assessing and managing the environment from a landscape perspective Ecological relationships are nested within the landscape. Identifying the relevant spatial and temporal scales is critical for an effective understanding of ecological functions that human societies depend upon. Moreover, human encroachment into natural areas, or changes in climate, can alter spatial relationships, which in turn can negatively affect vital plant and wildlife patterns—and weaken economic structures needed to sustain human societies. This book is the first to combine multiple disciplines into one cohesive strategy to study these crucial connections, and looks toward building a social paradigm that embraces the dynamics of ecological systems. This book: Integrates landscape ecology, environmental risk assessment, valuation of ecological goods and services, and environmental management decision processes into one single source Includes chapters on quantitative measures, Bayesian modeling,¿economic analysis, and sustainable landscapes Covers marine, forest, agricultural, and pharmaceutical risk assessment Has a chapter on predicting climate change risk to ecosystems Has a companion ftp site with color graphics, animations, and risk assessment tools With material that is accessible across all knowledge levels, Environmental Risk Assessment and Management from a Landscape Perspective moves beyond looking solely at chemical contaminants to diagnose environmental threats, and aims to accomplish practical risk assessment in a manner that supports long-term sustainable management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most ecological risk assessments consider the risk to individual organisms or organism-level attributes. From a management perspective, however, risks to population-level attributes and processes are often more relevant. Despite many published calls for population risk assessment and the abundance of available scientific research and technical tool

Book Assessment and Management of Environmental Risks

Download or read book Assessment and Management of Environmental Risks written by Igor Linkov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing environmental contamination requires decision makers to weigh eXlstmg risks against the potential effects of implementing environmental policies - considering both the benefits and disruptions that may result from different actions. The NATO Advanced Research Workshop in Lisbon was an important step in the development and application of cost efficient methods of risk assessment especiaIly within the constraints of a budget. The goal of the workshop was to evaluate the potential for risk assessment to serve as a unified and unifying technique in addressing a wide range of environmental problems. Papers presented in this book discuss issues ranging from specific and local studies (specific site, ecosystem, pollutant) to global decision and management frameworks (watersheds, regions, integration of multiple poIlutants and stressors); they develop a range of approaches starting from specific methods to widely applied public policies (Figure 1). The papers show that the use of risk assessment can provide the scientific basis for environmentaIly sound and cost-efficient policies, strategies, and solutions to our environmental chaIlenges. The organization of the Proceedings reflects sessions and discussions during the workshop. The papers in the introductory Chapter summarize the positions of Drs. Glenn Suter (EPA) and Jim Wilson (Resources for the Future) regarding whether the use of often-expensive risk assessments in developing countries can be justified, given evolving regulatory institutions and limited resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As debates over how relative risk can be used to shape landscape-scale environmental management intensify, Regional-Scale Risk Assessment demonstrates the capabilities of RRM using nine case studies in the Pacific Northwest, Pennsylvania, Brazil, and Tasmania. The authors use a process of ranking and filters to interrelate different kinds of risks

Book Ecological Risk Assessment

Download or read book Ecological Risk Assessment written by Lawrence V. Tannenbaum and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will present a detailed analysis of how some current ecological risk assessment (ERA) studies fall short of their intended mark. It will discuss the limitations of these studies and explain how sometimes their premises are fundamentally flawed, thus producing data that is not particularly useful. The analysis will explain that learning from past mistakes coupled with a willingness to experiment outside of the conventional studies, can lead to numerous new and useful studies that can make for significant gains in ERA. The new studies presented in the book will be strategically grouped, facilitating readers locating those that relate to their individual areas of expertise.

The idea for the current monograph followed such an approach. The monograph presents six best practice examples from six of the project’s Pilot Action Regions (PAR). It is one of the deliverables of the GreenRisk4ALPs project funded by the EU Interreg Alpine Space program. The project aims to develop decision support tools supporting risk-based protective forest management in the Alpine Space. All main outputs of the project have been tested, improved and operationally applied in the PARs. The monograph is primarily intended for forestry experts, decision-makers at all levels of decision-making and other professionals.
