Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pilgrim Sermons But, because a brother's praise may seem to be not free from favoring prejudice, I am going to let others speak here of his character and life, only adding that none of his success at any time sur prised me, for from boyhood I had felt that if God spared his life until he was forty years of age, he would be near the top of the profession to which he might give himself. He chose the ministry of the Gospel of Christ - a calling in which selfish ambition should have no place. The years of his labor were few, but in that time few men indeed accomplished more for the Master. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrim Church: And Other Sermons The simple facts of Percy Clough Ainsworth's quiet life may soon be written: the hidden springs of his influence and charm it would take long to trace. He was born at Woodbridge in Suffolk in 1873. His father, the Rev. William Ainsworth, was a Wesleyan minister, honoured and successful in his calling, of great force of character, and heroically patient under much physical suffering. Genius, like knighthood, docs not pass by earthly inheritance, yet the Spirit who brings the gift loves to visit the home of puritan grace and strength. Percy Ainsworth received a heritage of fortitude from both his parents. The home was singularly sunny, with an eager intellectual atmosphere. Brothers and sisters vied with one another in fresh thought and humour: the good fruits of the mind were never frost-bitten. Percy early learned to value aright his gifts, and this training of encouragement helps to explain his modest self-reliance and secret faithfulness in following the bent of his original powers. Book The Faith of the Pilgrims

Download or read book The Faith of the Pilgrims written by John Codman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of the Pilgrims: A Sermon Delivered at Plymouth, on the Twenty-Second of December, 1831 It is much to be desired that the good old prae tice of catechetical instruction, once so common, if not universal, in New England, was revived among us. While we rejoice in the system of Sabbath school instruction, which is the glory of the age in which we live, and in the use of the Bible, as the great text book in these little nurseries of the church, we must be allowed, as descendants of the puritans, and as conscientiously attached to their faith, to express the earnest wish, that, in those families and congregations, who still profess to ad here to the faith of the pilgrims, the Shorter Cate chism may hold the same conspicuous place, that it occupied in the households and public assemblies of their pious ancestors. Book The Plymouth Pilgrims

Download or read book The Plymouth Pilgrims written by J. C. Labaree and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plymouth Pilgrims: A Sermon Preached in the First Church, Randolph, December 25, 1870 When a good deed is nobly done, it deserves to be held in honor. The excellence of an action does not consist in the pomp and splendor of its performance. The humblest may be the grandest, the most lowly may be the most honorable. Phis is a principle in the divine government. They who lightly esteem God, and who rise to place and power in disregard of the strict principles of right, they shall in time become obscured or despised. "The good only are immortal" in love and honor. This judgment can be perfectly carried out only in the world to come. Yet here on earth God has allowed to it great prominence. I he veneration of our fellow-men is not overlooked when the Lord affirms, "Them that honor me I will honor." History is just. And it becomes an important agency under the direction of Providence in accomplishing the divine purpose of giving honor to whom honor is due. Your attention is invited to the illustration of this principle in the history of the Pilgrim Fathers of New England, and the continued and increasing honor which is bestowed upon them. Before the days of Luther there were christians in England who had been taught the simple truths and forms of Christianity by John Wickliffe and his disciples. Book The Pilgrims and Their Principles

Download or read book The Pilgrims and Their Principles written by D. H. Riddle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-20 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrims and Their Principles: A Sermon Before the New England Society of Pittsburgh, on the Evening of December 22nd, 1850, in the Third Presbyterian Church California and to Oregon - from Niagara to the Isthmus - dotting with verdure as rich and beauteous as when it first took root, regions that stretch from one ocean to the other. Already their line has gone out through all the earth, and there is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. God's eye only can measure the ultimate results of an event which was so small in its beginnings, on the world's ordi nary scale of measurement. This Puritan Saxondom, says Carlyle, was only despicable, laughable then - nobody can manage to laugh at it now. It is one of the strongest things under the sun at present. Since the year 1769, when the Old Colony Club first observed this anniversary, an honored and honorable custom has sanctioned the cele bration of this event, the landing of the Pilgrims, by the sons and daughters of New England, wherever they are scattered over the world. On the same principle that Rome, in her palmiest days, thus honored the rearing of its walls by Romulus; and the Israelites, by God's command, remembered through all their generations, the night of the Passover; and many Christians at this period, a mightier event than either, the advent of the Redeemer, Forefathers' day is ohserved in various ways, wherever two or three are gathered together, who trace their honored lineage back to the early settlers of New Eng land, and their small beginnings, to the rock of Plymouth!
