Book excerpt: Contains fair copies of 31 poems (duplicating "The advance guard") by John Hay, written in Hay's hand (except for the last six, in a single unidentified hand) on a series of 74 unnumbered leaves (leaving some internal blanks). Two of the poems ("Realized ideals" and "To a pretty saint") were never collected in print; the others comprise all but five of the additions to the contents of Pike County ballads and other pieces (1871) that were included in Poems (1890), though some lack the titles with which they were printed in that collection. While "Distiches" had been included in Pike County ballads, it is here expanded from 6 to 12 distiches; it is the only poem in the volume with emendations (in pencil), some of them corresponding to the printed version of 1890, which is further expanded to 18 distiches.
