This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pig Crop Report: December 1960 The 1960 pig crop totaled 88. 7 million head, a decrease of 11 percent from last year9 according to the Cr0p Reporting Board. The spring pig cr0p totaled 47. 1 million head, compared with 56° 6 million head in i959'n-l-a' decrease of 17per cent. The fall pig cr0p totaled 41° 6 million head, compared with 42. 8 million a year ago, a decrease of 3 percent, \ The smaller spring crop was the result of a 15 percent decrease in sows farrowing and a 2 percent drop in pigs per litter. The smaller fall crop came as a result of a 3 percent decrease in sows farrowing which more than offset a slight increase in pigs per litter. For the spring of 1961, reports based on farmers' intentions indicate 7. 1 mil lion sows to farrow, or 4 percent above the 6, 8 million sows farrowed in the Spring of 1960. If these intentions materialize, and the number of pigs per litter should equal the 10-year average, with an allowance for upward trend, the 1961. Spring pig crop would be 49. 5 million head-5 percent above the 1960 spring pig crop. This report is based on a survey of 181, 000 farm and ranch operators. These returns were obtained largely in cooperation with the Post Office Department through rural mail carriers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pig Crop Report: June 1960 The 1960 spring pig crop totaled 49, 103, 000 head, down 16 percent from the spring crop of 1959, according to the Crop Reporting Board. The number of sows farrowing during the spring months totaled 7, 060, 000, 15 percent below the spring of 1959. The number of pigs saved per litter was compared with 7. 07 for the Spring of 1959. Reports on breeding intentions indicate that 5, 889, 000 sows will farrow between June 1 and December 1 this year. This would be a drop of 4 percent from the 6, 138, 000 litters during the fall months of 1959. If these farrow ing intentions are carried out and if the number of pigs saved per litter is equal to the average, with an allowance for upward trend, the 1960 fall pig crop will be 41. 5 million head. The combined Spring and fall pig crops for 1960 would then be 90. 6 million head, down 11 percent from the 1959 pig crop and 1 percent below the 1949-58 average. The number of hogs 6 months old and older on farms and ranches June 1 was 7 percent less than the corresponding date a year ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Situation, Vol. 44: February 1960 Prices may show some further rise, but a modest decline is likely late this winter when marketings of fall-born pigs are largest. The seasonal increase in prices this spring is expected to carry prices above year-earlier levels, in con trast to the relatively stable prices of last spring. Prices at their seasonal peak next summer will be considerably higher than last summer. At the time of the intentions report last December sows had not yet been bred for part of the Spring crop. Farmers' intentions were still subject to change due to economic and other factors, as well as the effects of the intentions report itself. Book Science the Endless Frontier

Download or read book Science the Endless Frontier written by Vannevar Bush and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic case for why government must support science—with a new essay by physicist and former congressman Rush Holt on what democracy needs from science today Science, the Endless Frontier is recognized as the landmark argument for the essential role of science in society and government’s responsibility to support scientific endeavors. First issued when Vannevar Bush was the director of the US Office of Scientific Research and Development during the Second World War, this classic remains vital in making the case that scientific progress is necessary to a nation’s health, security, and prosperity. Bush’s vision set the course for US science policy for more than half a century, building the world’s most productive scientific enterprise. Today, amid a changing funding landscape and challenges to science’s very credibility, Science, the Endless Frontier resonates as a powerful reminder that scientific progress and public well-being alike depend on the successful symbiosis between science and government. This timely new edition presents this iconic text alongside a new companion essay from scientist and former congressman Rush Holt, who offers a brief introduction and consideration of what society needs most from science now. Reflecting on the report’s legacy and relevance along with its limitations, Holt contends that the public’s ability to cope with today’s issues—such as public health, the changing climate and environment, and challenging technologies in modern society—requires a more capacious understanding of what science can contribute. Holt considers how scientists should think of their obligation to society and what the public should demand from science, and he calls for a renewed understanding of science’s value for democracy and society at large. A touchstone for concerned citizens, scientists, and policymakers, Science, the Endless Frontier endures as a passionate articulation of the power and potential of science.
