Book Hawaiian National Bibliography 1780 1900

Download or read book Hawaiian National Bibliography 1780 1900 written by David W. Forbes and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth and final volume of the Hawaiian National Bibliography, 1780-1900, records the most volatile period in Hawaii's history. American business interests and the desire for a constitutional monarchy were pitted against the desire of the monarchs, King Kaläkaua and Queen Liliuokalani, to strengthen the power of the throne. The convulsions of the 1887 and 1889 revolutions were succeeded by the overthrow of the monarchy on January 17, 1893. Documents revealing the struggle over annexation, beginning in 1893, and the counterrevolution of 1895 are an important component of this volume. Annexation in 1898 was followed by a two-year period during which functions of government and laws were altered to conform to those of the United States. After the organic act became effective in 1900, vestiges of monarchical Hawaii disappeared and the history of the Territory of Hawaii unfolded. As with the previous volumes, Volume 4 is a record of printed works touching on some aspect of the political, religious, cultural, or social history of the Hawaiian Islands. A valuable component of this series is the inclusion of newspaper and periodical accounts, and single-sheet publications such as broadsides, circulars, playbills, and handbills. Entries are extensively annotated, and also provided for each are exact title, date of publication, size of volume, collation of pages, number and type of plates and maps, references, and location of copies.

Book Hawaii s Story

Download or read book Hawaii s Story written by Liliʻuokalani and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-21 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir of a Hawaiian queen living in the Victorian era is fascinating to anyone seeking rare historical pieces and materials about political leaders. It tells about Liliuokalani, the last queen of Hawaii, whose ancestors were first converts to Christianity and creators of the constitution. She lived in the turbulent times of the Victorian era, a problematic period for Hawaii and herself. Her life was full of events – from marriage and coronation to revolution and imprisonment. The book is written in the first person and claims to be a personal memoir of the real princess. It describes in detail her childhood, marriage, a world tour, acquaintance and friendship with President Cleveland and his wife, a visit to Great Britain, meetings with nobility and then the overthrow of the monarchy in Hawaii, and other political events leading to the annexation of Hawaii to the US in the late 19thcentury, which she didn't support. The book is considered an important document and one of the key historical sources for the Hawaiian sovereignty movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover Queen Liliuokalani, The Hawaiian Kingdom's Last Monarch... The 1800's, particularly the latter half of that century, was a time full of change, orchestrated chaos, and new beginnings. England was in the throes of the Industrial Revolution. The United States of America was blazing a trail for the western half of the country. In addition to the exploration of the continent, the country broke out in a civil war over the matter of states' rights. South America was in a sort of Cultural Revolution as they drifted away from the control of Spain and their governments were ruled by military dictators. Yet, located in the center of Pacific Ocean, a string of islands existed making waves in World History comparable to any other much larger country or nation. This string of islands is referred to today as Hawaii. From how the archipelago measuring over three thousand kilometers long formed the first settlement to the unification of the islands by King Kamehameha the Great, Hawaii's rich culture, and history takes a hold of you and takes you on a ride of the highs and lows of the monarchy-that is, until subterfuge, trickery, and greed snatch the islands from the hands of the last monarch-Queen Lili'uokalanai. Watch as in a matter of forty eight years, the population of native Hawaiians drops from ninety five percent to a tiny fifteen percent. The young princess must make a decision that could cost many of those under her control the loss of financial prosperity and choose between the lives of her people or their livelihood. Follow along as William McKinley deals a final blow to the Hawaiian Kingdom with his McKinley Tariff Act of 1890. Then came the day that the tiny kingdom would find itself absorbed into another-the day that Hawaii became a territory of the United States of America in 1898 after the overthrow & imprisonment of the Queen sliced through the heart of a kingdom forever changing its history.

Book excerpt: Before Hawai'i was unified under a single monarch, its islands were ruled by warring chiefs. In 1810, the islands were finally united under a chief considered to be the greatest of Hawai'i's monarchs"€"Kamehameha the Great. His reign marked the beginning of the Kingdom of Hawai'i that lasted until its tragic overthrow in 1893 by American businessmen. Hawai'i's monarchs were tasked with shepherding in tumultuous change as the world began to encroach on the island kingdom. Visiting sailors, explorers, missionaries, traders, and whalers transformed Hawai'i's social, economic, political, cultural, and environmental future not only centrally but on the world-stage. As American economic, cultural, and military interests in the islands grew throughout the nineteenth century, the stage was set for a confrontation leading to the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. A century later, Native Hawaiians remember their monarchs with reverence, recognizing the struggles of their chiefs to chart a wise path through the turbulent storms of disease, upheaval and change that had swept the islands of Hawai'i. The Hawaiian Monarchy provides a narrative overview of each major monarch as they fought to protect Hawaiian sovereignty and its people, covering major events during their rule and the challenges they encountered.
