Book Pictures of Illinois One Hundred Years Ago Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pictures of Illinois One Hundred Years Ago Classic Reprint written by Morris Birkbeck and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures of Illinois One Hundred Years Ago As this, the Sixteenth Volume of The Lakeside Classics, goes to press, the world is celebrating the armistice that ends the fighting of The Great War. During the past year the war program has greatly disorganized American industry - taking many into direct military service, transferring many from non-war to war productions, and leaving the less essential industries curtailed and disorganized. The business of printing has suffered perhaps more than its share of this disorganization, and though the Lakeside Press has been no exception, it takes pride in its service flag of 200 stars and mourns and honors the three brave boys who have made the supreme sacrifice. The record made by the graduates and the older apprentices of the School for Apprentices is especially noteworthy. Of 68 graduate journeymen, 35 are in uniform, as are likewise 20 of the 100 apprentices who are over eighteen. That so large a proportion of these boys should have answered their country's call is a tribute to the esprit de corps and patriotic sentiment of the school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Years in Illinois: 1818-1918 The friends of to-day and yesterday, to whom this book of memories is dedicated, will require no word of explanation, excuse or apology for the appearance of this volume. The casual or curious reader of the future who may chance to pick up the book in an idle or un guarded moment, may wonder how it happened that a physician permitted the child to live; so, in view of this possibility, it is considered proper to say a word or two as a defense against possible animadversions on my professional character and ability. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Student's History of Illinois The author's experience in teaching Illinois History for the past dozen years justifies the belief that he knows what may be omitted and what Should be included in a good text on Illinois History. The revised edition will have the advantage of this knowledge. Maps and illustrations in history texts are valuable in proportion to what they reveal of the real historic move ment. In this age of illustrated literature and travel, the need of pictures in history texts has greatly decreased. This theory is the justification for the omission of many pictures which appeared in the first edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Woman s Story of Pioneer Illinois

Download or read book A Woman s Story of Pioneer Illinois written by Christiana Holmes Tillson and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christiana and John Tillson moved from Massachusetts to central Illinois in 1822. Upon arriving in Montgomery County near what would soon be Hillsboro, they set up a general store and real estate business and began to raise a family. A half century later, in 1870, Christiana Tillson wrote about her early days in Illinois in a memoir published by R. R. Donnelley in 1919. The Tillsons lived quite ordinary lives in extraordinary times, notes Kay J. Carr, introducing this edition. They moved west and prospered in the land business at a time when America was being transformed from a rural, agricultural country into an urban, industrial nation. Their views and sensibilities, Carr says, might seem strange to us, but they were entirely normal to people in the early nineteenth century. Thus Tillson's memoir provides fascinating but believable snapshots of ordinary nineteenth-century American life.
