Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures of Europe, Framed in Ideas The Two Journeys. Forth to the East! Revivings of the day Break, pouring promised strength upon my way; Another line thy weary footsteps pressed; Thy sun of life was lowering to the West. Ah, gracious Nature! ah, soul-cheering Art! Was it for this you did your healing part, - Lengthening my lease for destiny so poor, To see his ashes carried from his door? O earthly father! whom the heavenly gave, And yet can from the mortal sentence save, Thou wilt forgive the sigh that dumps my songs, To think that title all to Heaven belongs. Sad tears, with joyful, dropped from me apace, While thou thy chequered history wouldst trace: Thy words sublime, my parent, oft shall rise To keep some blessed moisture in my eyes: - "The hireling's day I have accomplished now; The evening shadows gather on my brow; The hireling for the shadows longs, my son: They tell him that his task at last is done. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pen Pictures of Europe I shall hardly know how to behave when I get on shore, and find myself standing where I wish to, and things staying where I place them. The hood has been a comfort to me. Some of the ladies say that the hard pillows and the rolling of the ship have made their ears very sore; but my hood, besides being warm and comfortable and saving my ears, did me good service yesterday morning. I had put on my shoes, and arose to go on with my toilet, when the ship rolled over on one side, causing me to slide backwards to the sofa, on which I partly sat down, and hit my head on the window-frame but the thick, close border of the hood saved me from a severe bruise. It has been quite cold ever since I left New York, and I have worn my thickest clothing. There has been a great call every night for bottles of hot water, and I have been much amused to see how the stewardess manages to keep things warm. Convers ing with a lady who sat bolstered Up with pillows in one corner of the cabin, the stewardess came along and said, I'll only dis turb you a minute, and raising up the pillows, she pulled out a tea-pot and placed it on the table; then turning to me, Please, ma'am, will ye move a little I did so, and found some milk toast had been put under the cushions near me to keep warm. Book Picturesque Europe Vol 1

Download or read book Picturesque Europe Vol 1 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Picturesque Europe, Vol. 1: With Illustrations on Steel and Wood by the Most Eminent Artists; The British Isles English history in English homes. At the basis of every human institution lies hidden an idea - an idea which is ever discernible to the seeing eye and architecture expresses subtly, through the buildings of every age, the needs, the habits, the ideas of the day in which men built. We now, in our hurried, fevered, money-seeking modern life, build chiefly for temporary renting and occupation; and our houses are consequently mean and trivial. In the Olden time, the inner idea latent beneath building was permanence and continuity, framed in worthy Stateliness and noble beauty. The great homes expressed the idea inherent in a noble feudalism; and buildings attempted to perpetuate the masterhood of power to govern and to serve the state through race. And yet, in prizing justly the indispensable blessings of the new, let us not be unjust to the old. The old was true, if it no longer is. SO says our Carlyle. The'true ideal is ever based upon the real; and it is noteworthy how Tudor architecture seems to suit subtly with the thoughts and imaginings of Shakespeare. Shakespeare does not much mention architecture, the reason being, that the architecture of his day, and of the old time before him, was so good. We do think and speak much of architecture, the reason being that, to us, it is an art of the past; the architecture of our own day being, mainly, very poor, and mean, and unlovely; while the buildings which remain to us, as relics of our ancestors, are picturesque, poetical, instinct with noble and with true ideas. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major study to comprehensively analyse English encounters with the New World in the sixteenth century and their impact on early English understandings of America and changing approaches to exploration and settlement. The book traces the dynamism of early English encounters with the Americas and the many cultural influences that shaped English understandings of the new lands across the Atlantic. It illustrates that rather than being a period of inconsequential colonial failure in the Americas, the sixteenth century was in fact an era of assessment, adaptation and application that culminated in the survival of the first Anglo-American colony at Jamestown. Encountering early America will appeal to students and scholars working on early English colonialism in North America and European cultural encounters with the New World.

Book Antiquity in Print

Download or read book Antiquity in Print written by Daniel Orrells and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-16 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Orrells examines the ways in which the ancient world was visualized for Enlightenment readers, and reveals how antiquarian scholarship emerged as the principal technology for envisioning ancient Greek culture, at a time when very few people could travel to Greece which was still part of the Ottoman Empire. Offering a fresh account of the rise of antiquarianism in the 18th century, Orrells shows how this period of cultural progression was important for the invention of classical studies. In particular, the main focus of this book is on the visionary experimentalism of antiquarian book production, especially in relation to the contentious nature of ancient texts. With the explosion of the Quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns, eighteenth-century intellectuals, antiquarians and artists such as Giambattista Vico, Johann Joachim Winckelmann, the Comte de Caylus, James Stuart, Julien-David Leroy, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Pierre-François Hugues d'Hancarville all became interested in how printed engravings of ancient art and archaeology could visualize a historical narrative. These figures theorized the relationship between ancient text and ancient material and visual culture - theorizations which would pave the way to foundational questions at the heart of the discipline of classical studies and neoclassical aesthetics.

Book Neoconservative Images of Europe

Download or read book Neoconservative Images of Europe written by Philipp Scherzer and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While in the last twenty years perceptions of Europe have been subjected to detailed historical scrutiny, American images of the Old World have been almost wantonly neglected. As a response to this scholarly desideratum, this pioneering study analyzes neoconservative images of Europe since the 1970s on the basis of an extensive collection of sources. With fresh insight into the evolution of American images of Europe as well as into the history of U.S. neoconservatism, the book appeals to readers familiar and new to the subject matters alike. The study explores how, beginning in the early 1970s, ideas of the United States as an anti-Europe have permeated neoconservative writing and shaped their self-images and political agitation. The choice of periodization and investigated personnel enables the author to refute popular claims that widespread Euro-critical sentiment in the United Studies during the early 21st century – considerably ignited by neoconservatives – was a distinct post-Cold War phenomenon. Instead, the analysis reveals that the fiery rhetoric in the context of the Iraq War debates was merely the climax of a decade-old development.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Jhalak Prize 'A revelation' Owen Jones 'Afropean seizes the blur of contradictions that have obscured Europe's relationship with blackness and paints it into something new, confident and lyrical' Afua Hirsch A Guardian, New Statesman and BBC History Magazine Best Book of 2019 'Afropean. Here was a space where blackness was taking part in shaping European identity ... A continent of Algerian flea markets, Surinamese shamanism, German Reggae and Moorish castles. Yes, all this was part of Europe too ... With my brown skin and my British passport - still a ticket into mainland Europe at the time of writing - I set out in search of the Afropeans, on a cold October morning.' Afropean is an on-the-ground documentary of areas where Europeans of African descent are juggling their multiple allegiances and forging new identities. Here is an alternative map of the continent, taking the reader to places like Cova Da Moura, the Cape Verdean shantytown on the outskirts of Lisbon with its own underground economy, and Rinkeby, the area of Stockholm that is eighty per cent Muslim. Johny Pitts visits the former Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow, where West African students are still making the most of Cold War ties with the USSR, and Clichy Sous Bois in Paris, which gave birth to the 2005 riots, all the while presenting Afropeans as lead actors in their own story.
