Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures From English History, by the Great Historical Artists England, or, at least, to serve as starting-points from which to prosecute further inquiry. The subjects having been selected, the aim has been to choose the best authors. Here the compiler has experienced his greatest difficulty, owing to the embarrassment of riches. One cannot hope to escape criticism from every reader familiar with the wealth of word-painting in English historical and biographical literature. To one who may wonder at the judgment which omitted his favorite passages, it can only be said that decisions have been reached through a desire to secure at once specimens from as many representative writers as possible, so as to give as varied and striking a series as the space would allow. The selections in the earlier part of the book are from writers who have prepared condensed histories, and thus helped us to cover much ground in a single chapter. The later chapters will be found, if less comprehensive, more crowded with the gems and masterpieces of historical literature. Book History of the English People Vol 1 of 5 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the English People Vol 1 of 5 Classic Reprint written by John Richard Green and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the English People, Vol. 1 of 5 IT was a favourite wish of my husband's to see English History interpreted and illustrated by pictures which should tell us how men and things appeared to the lookers-on of their own day, and how contemporary observers aimed at representing them. This new edition of his book is an attempt to carry out such an idea. It has seemed most fitting to choose for the purpose the work of the writer who by the brilliance of his historic imagination has recovered for Englishmen many regions of the past left waste and neglected, and brought to light costly treasures that had long lain hidden in some of its most obscure corners. The Short History, with its vivid realization of all that goes to make up the life of a People, lends itself in a singular way to illustrations which are themselves the work of the people century by century, and the wisdom of the historian is constantly justified as the details of some vivid description, or the significance with which some in cident is clothed, or the new measure and proportion given to facts that before his time were common and despised, are finely emphasized by the work of old scribes or artists to whom all these things were present realities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pen Pictures of British Battles: Painted by Author and Artist After the battle Off Coronel, the Glasgow, along with the battleship Canopus, had put into the harbour of Port Stanley, in East Falkland. The former vessel had been damaged, but she was quickly repaired; and when Admiral Sturdee arrived from home, she took her place in his squadron, her Officers and men being eager to set things right with the Germans. It was reported that Von Spee's squadron was going to make a raid on the Falklands; but when he came round Cape Horn he found awaiting him eight British ships Of war, and, SO far as we know, this was a complete surprise to him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old England: Its Scenery, Art, and People I do not profess in these pages to present much that is new or comprehensive in relation to so well known a country as England; but I have striven to draw a faithful though rapid picture of the English portion of the island, going from Tweed mouth to Land's End, touching upon nearly every county, and making the entire circuit of the land. The English Cathedrals have particularly attracted me, and I have loved to linger in their majestic shadows; and for the sake of younger readers, some account has been given of the history and progress of Architecture in England. I have everywhere spoken with the freedom which an American is accustomed to exercise upon all subjects, and yet in no spirit of bitterness or hostility, but, on the contrary, in a spirit of rever ence and love for the great land of our fathers. Book The English Pre Raphaelite Painters

Download or read book The English Pre Raphaelite Painters written by Percy H. Bate and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Pre-Raphaelite Painters: Their Associates and Successors That such a fact is of high importance in studying their work is most true, but the adequate consideration of so fascinating a feature would extend this volume far beyond its due limits. But the reader who bears in mind that Ford Madox Brown, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Thomas Woolner, James Collinson, Walter Deverell, Walter Crane, J. W. Inchbold, Sir Noel Paton, and William Bell Scott are all poets of varying achievement, and who remembers that in the inner history of the movement the names, inter alia, of Christina Rossetti, William Morris, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Coventry Patmore, Mathilde Blind, Philip Bourke Marston, and T. Gordon Hake, loom large, will see more clearly the aim of the Pre-Raphaelite artists, and will comprehend the intimate association of poetic feeling and expression with their devotion to veracity of presentment. Reference has been made, as far as was possible, in the list of illustrations, to the owners, artists, and photographers who have allowed their pictures to appear in this volume. The author and publishers desire, however, to express here their appreciation of the kindness and courtesy they have almost invariably experienced, and to tender their cordial thanks for the permissions for reproduction, without which no adequate representation of the Pre-Raphaelite School of Painting would have been possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Lead Work: Its Art and History The material which is available for illustration is so great in amount (particularly in pipe-heads, cisterns, and statues) and so scattered, that there are doubtless omitted both from illustration and reference many admirable examples, but a book has its limits. My collection of photographs contains many examples which I should have included but for the fear of overloading. Those who are familiar with a cistern here and a statue there may look for them in vain: I can only hope that every important class of subject is represented. I have made but small reference to traditional methods of working lead as belonging rather to the technical that the artistic history of the metal's uses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Didi-Huberman, visual representation has an "underside" in which intelligible forms lose clarity and defy rational understanding. Art historians, he contends, fail to engage this underside, and he suggests that art historians look to Freud's concept of the "dreamwork", a mobile process that often involves substitution and contradiction.
