Book Chapters on the Natural History of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chapters on the Natural History of the United States Classic Reprint written by Robert W. Shufeldt and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on the Natural History of the United States It will be observed that quite a large number of the illustra tions are reproduced from photographs Of living animals of va rions species and kinds. These were all taken by myself from the living subjects, and nearly in every instance of natural Size. Too much cannot be said in favor of the constant use of the photographic camera in zoology, and when by its means really first-rate, life-like pictures of any of our living forms are secured in natural attitudes, and with nature's surroundings, they Should surely be published, and be made to take the place of many of the highly incorrect figures of our animals, still to be found in popular works upon natural history. Taxidermists and artists will then, I am sure, appreciate this feature in my book, for if anything be useful and helpful to them in their work it is good pictures of this class, used, as they safely can be, as models. Book A Natural History of Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Natural History of Animals Classic Reprint written by John Bigland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Natural History of Animals The study of Nature is the basis of Religion; and in the primitive ages of the world, previous to the epoch of revelation, mankind had no other guide to direct them to a knowledge of the existence and attributes of the Deity, than the contemplation of his works. These, indeed, exhibited such evident proofs of his power, his wisdom, and his goodness, as were sufficient to convince rational creatures, that a self-existent and infinite Being was the source and origin of all existence. This St. Paul so well understood, that he condemns the Gentiles, because, after having recognised the Supreme Being in the works of the creation, they neglected to worship him, and considers them as inexcus able; Because, says he, the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead. Book Rambles and Reveries of a Naturalist Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rambles and Reveries of a Naturalist Classic Reprint written by William Spiers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles and Reveries of a Naturalist His little volume of Natural History sketches has very little to do with opinions or speculations. The aim of the writer has been to describe the facts and phenomena of Nature as they have appeared to present themselves to his own observation. They are life-pictures rather than compilations. So far as systematic arrangement is concerned, there has certainly been an effort to treat each subject taken up in such a way as to lay at least a stepping-stone on the path to a more serious contemplation of the sciences of the text-book and the laboratory, but the primary intention of the author has been rather to awaken or to stimulate a love for Nature in the minds of some who may not as yet have suspected what wondrous and ever-varying beauty lies everywhere about us in ditch and pond, in rock and stone, in river and sea, on earth and in the skies. The same objects have been described by other and abler pens, but facts and laws present them selves in different aspects to different minds, and the ceaseless and diversified operations of Nature cannot be too frequently portrayed. Even those who would not care to claim the character of students of Nature are not unwilling to be considered lovers of Nature, and for such the plain and non-technical descriptions of a few of her secrets, by those who tell the story of what they themselves have seen and felt in her presence, cannot fail to possess some degree of interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Illustrated Natural History Some Reptiles inhabit the dry and burning deserts; but the generality of these creatures are semi-aquatic in their habits, are fitted by their structure for progression on land or in water, and are able to pass a considerable time below the surface without requiring to breathe. This capacity is mostly the result of the manner in which the circulation and aeration of their blood is effected.
