Book excerpt: Anglophiles and students of portraiture will find that The Royal Portrait fills a surprising void in the literature, as Scott (Royal Collection) presents for the first time a survey of British portraits housed in the various venues of the Royal Collection. The broad scope ranges from Richard II (the first British king portrayed) to Queen Elizabeth II; the latter monarch, along with Queen Victoria, is the subject of an independent chapter, while other chapters focus on images of royals from a particular dynastic house, such as the Stuart and the Hanoverian. Through an interesting selection of diverse media and formats employed in different periods, Scott explores the central question of "what constitutes a royal portrait?" The answers are multifaceted and contingent on such factors as patronage, function, royal control, and artistic intention; nevertheless symbolic visual conventions can still be traced in the representations of British monarchs over the centuries. This is a clearly written, well-illustrated survey; for more in-depth analyses of particular works one will need to turn to specialized sources, e.g., D. Howarth's Images of Rule (1997). Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through researchers/faculty; general readers. General Readers; Lower-division Undergraduates; Upper-division Undergraduates; Graduate Students; Researchers/Faculty. Reviewed by J. K. Dabbs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One day in the 1860s, so the story goes, an ambitious up-and-coming female sculptor was making love to an older, married man in an art studio. It was complicated because the man was not only one of the most famous sculptors in the country, but the young woman's teacher and mentor. Things got worse when they were rudely interrupted by the woman's mother, accompanied by her faithful servant. The mother, shocked at what she had stumbled across, was dressed in black, still mourning the death of her beloved husband. She screamed at her daughter. And on this occasion, the young woman screamed back, one of the very few people who would dare stand up to such a formidable figure. The daughter accused her mother of hypocrisy, of having an affair with the kilted servant who stood by her side, and threatened to expose her mother's affair to the wider world if she continued to menace her. (An excerpt from the Chapter XIII) People have long been fascinated by the stories behind royal portraits. This volume takes readers inside royal families by way of great paintings, like Holbein's Henry VIII, van Dyck's Charles I, Millais' The Princes in the Tower, Freud's Elizabeth II, and more. Featuring incredible, little known stories of the royals and illustrates, this beautiful collection is illustrated with color paintings, photos, family trees and Royal London walking tours with maps.

Book Pictures and Royal Portraits Illustrative of English and Scottish History From the Introduction of Christianity to the Present Time Vol 1

This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures and Royal Portraits Illustrative of English and Scottish History, From the Introduction of Christianity to the Present Time, Vol. 1: Engraved From Important Works by Distinguished Modern Painters, and From Authentic State Portraits, With Descriptive Historical Sketches IN any collection of Paintings, whether they belong to a private or a public gallery, it will be seen that the eager attention of most of the Visitors is at once attracted by a really good historical picture representing a well-known incident or containing the figures of some prominent actors in the national story. The reason for this is obvious. It is the peculiar province of a great work of art to appeal directly to sentiment and imagination, and where the outlines of the narrative are already known, there is an immediate gratification in receiving a vivid impression of the scene in its dramatic action, and in making closer acquaintance with the personages who were engaged in the principal event, in their habits as they lived. No ordinary reading of history can compensate for the lack of this direct interest, no mere-biographical notice can produce so distinct an impression as authentic portraits exhibiting the actual characteristics of those about whose personal appearance we have often speculated. Book excerpt: Synopsis: Hundreds of painted and photographic images exist of Queen Elizabeth II. Throughout her reign, she has inspired photographers and painters not only to embrace tradition but also to extend the genre of royal portraiture. To coincide with her Diamond Jubilee, this book presents portraits and images by artists including Dorothy Wilding, Cecil Beaton, Pietro Annigoni, Gerhard Richter, Patrick Lichfield, Andy Warhol, Lucian Freud, Gilbert & George, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Annie Leibovitz, that collectively chart the changing portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II, and the different ways in which her image has been appropriated and manipulated by artists as well as the mass-media. Over the last sixty years, the Queen's image has provided a fruitful and evocative area for investigation by a range of contemporary artists. Author Paul Moorhouse explores the complex evolution of these representations. Beginning with formal royal portraits, he probes the dialogue between traditional portraiture and a progressive informality in the mass-media. The author shows how this interaction has produced a new iconography that has profoundly extended the idea of the royal portrait and influenced the modern perception of monarchy. The author demonstrates that the broad range of artworks illustrated in the book provide a fascinating lens through which her reign may be viewed, evoking a wider artistic, social and historical context. The result is an inspirational book that sheds new light on the changing face of royal portraiture.

Download or read book A Royal Passion written by Anne M. Lyden and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1839, photography was announced to the world. Two years prior, a young Queen Victoria ascended to the throne of Great Britain and Ireland. These two events, while seemingly unrelated, marked the beginnings of a relationship that continued throughout the nineteenth century and helped construct the image of an entire age. A Royal Passion explores the connections between photography and the monarchy through Victoria’s embrace of the new medium and her portrayal through the lens. Together with Prince Albert, her beloved husband, the Queen amassed one of the earliest collections of photographs, including works by renowned photographers such as Roger Fenton, Gustave Le Gray, and Julia Margaret Cameron. Victoria was also the first British monarch to have her life recorded by the camera: images of her as wife, mother, widow, and empress proliferated around the world at a time when the British Empire spanned the globe. The featured essays consider Victoria’s role in shaping the history of photography as well as photography’s role in shaping the image of the Queen. Including more than 150 color images—several rarely seen before—drawn from the Royal Collection and the J. Paul Getty Museum, this volume accompanies an exhibition of the same name, on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from February 4 to June 20, 2014.
