Book excerpt: Excerpt from Picture of Organized Nature, in Its Spreading Over the Earth In the present Picture of Nature, it is intended to afford, with as much accuracy as possible, an idea of the manner in which plants and animals are spread upon the earth. The solid portion of our planet is surrounded by two principal elements - water, and atmospheric air: by the former, to an ascertained depth: by the latter, to an unknown extent. Water forms the sea; out of which the earth rises: so that, as the surface of the earth does not extend to hall that of the sea, it therefore appears to swim in it: of this the Picture, at the first view, affords a sufficient idea. On the main land, fresh water is found in rivers, lakes, and ponds: these run into the sea. All plants and animals live in one of these elements, inhabiting either the water or the air; being, in the former, in a lower; and in the latter, in a higher degree of perfection. The world of animated nature begins, as a complete whole, in the water; whence it ascends to the atmosphere, to a more delightful participation of the suns light; finally terminating in the perfect pattern of all organic formation - man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Swedish scientist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) is the known as the father of modern biological taxonomy. One of the greatest scientists in history, he formalized and popularized the system of binomial nomenclature and classified thousands of species of plants and animals. In his field, he is so well known that he is often referred to simply as "L." In this comprehensive biography, Linnaeus scholar Gunnar Broberg, draws on a wide range of new research to paint a vivid and intimate portrait of the man. Delving deep into Linnaeus's correspondence and other contemporary sources, Broberg introduces reader's to Linnaeus's family and takes them along on his famous expedition to Lapland. He also investigates the scientist's private thoughts on subjects such as evolution and religion, which often yielded eccentric results. Despite, or perhaps because, of his great achievement, Linnaeus could be moody and egotistical, and this nuanced biography does not shy away from presenting both his scientific achievements and human failings"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pioneering environmental activist presents her most influential writings—with an informative introduction by Wendell Berry. Motivated by agricultural devastation in her home country of India, Vandana Shiva became one of the world's most influential environmental and anti-globalization activists. Her groundbreaking research has exposed the destructive effects of monocultures and commercial agriculture and revealed the links between ecology, gender, and poverty. In The Vandana Shiva Reader, Shiva assembles her most influential writings, combining trenchant critiques of the corporate monopolization of agriculture with a powerful defense of biodiversity and food democracy. This essential collection demonstrates the full range of Shiva's research and activism, from her condemnation of commercial seed technology, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and the international agriculture industry's dependence on fossil fuels, to her tireless documentation of the extensive human costs of ecological deterioration. This important volume illuminates Shiva's profound understanding of both the perils and potential of our interconnected world and calls on citizens of all nations to renew their commitment to love and care for soil, seeds, and people.
