This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the advertising posters, town plans and geographical views that encouraged middle-class emigration to New Zealand in the 1840s. It explores how the New Zealand Company exploited visual literacy to advertise its settlement in Te Whanganui ā Tara Wellington. A tale of two towns, prospective English settlers looked to Wellington to make their homes, while Te Whanganui ā Tara was already home to numerous Māori sub-tribes. The book explores the worlds of each to ask how the images produced by the New Zealand Company were complicit in transferring Māori land into English ownership. Not seeking blame, it works instead to understand, and investigates processes of redress, offering hope for a post post-colonial future in Aotearoa New Zealand. This book will interest scholars and students of migration, visual culture and print history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antipodean soldiers and writers, meat carcasses and moa, British films and Kiwi tourists—throughout the last 150 years, people, objects and ideas have gone back and forth between New Zealand and London, defining and redefining the relationship between this country and the colonial center that many New Zealanders once called home. Exploring the relationship between a colony and its metropolis from Wakefield to the Wombles, it answers questions, including How did New Zealanders define themselves in relation to the center of British culture? and How did New Zealanders view London when they walked through King's Cross or saw the city in movies? By focusing on particular themes—from agricultural marketing to expatriate writers—this discussion develops a larger story about the construction of colonial and national identities.

Download or read book Colonial Constructs written by Leonard Bell and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the European settler perceive M&āori? What images of M&āori society and culture did European artists create for their distant audiences? What preconceptions and aesthetic models lay behind early European depictions of M&āori? These are some of the questions explored by art historian Leonard Bell in this major study of the relationship between the visual representation of M&āori and the ideology of colonialism. He explores the complex and unbalanced cultural interchange between Europeans and M&āori in nineteenth-century New Zealand, in addition to showing how the great range and variety of pictures often revealed more about the artists &– and their society and its attitudes &– than they did about M&āori themselves. This lively and readable book is well illustrated with examples of the artists' work and will be an important contribution to the understanding of colonial New Zealand and the role played by the artist in expressing and creating cultural patterns.

Book excerpt: Richly illustrated with Charles Heaphy's remarkable paintings and drawings as well as photographs and maps from the period, this engaging work tells the story of Heaphy's life and his art. A draughtsman, explorer, surveyor, gold agent, geologist, soldier, war hero, politician, land commissioner, and judge—even by the versatile standards of Victorian pioneers, Charles Heaphy had an unusually varied career. His biography tells as much about his own life as it does of the settlement of New Zealand. From his earliest surviving watercolor of bird life in 1839 to his last-known sketch, drawn on the back of an envelope in 1879, Charles Heaphy's art represents a remarkable visual diary of life as a settler in New Zealand.
