Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial History of the Civil War in the United States of America, Vol. 1 The task of making a record of the events of the late Civil War in our Republic is not a pleasant one for an American citizen. It would be more consonant with his wishes to bury in oblivion all knowledge of those events which compose the materials of the sorrowful story of a strife among his brethren, of terrible energy and woeful operations. But that privilege is denied him. The din of the conflict was heard all over the world, and people of all nations were spectators of the scene. The fact cannot be hidden. It has become a part of the history of the inhabitants of the earth, and will forever occupy a conspicuous place in the annals of mankind. What remains for the American citizen to do, is to see that the stylus of history shall make a truthful record. I imposed upon myself the task of making, so far as my ability and an honest purpose would permit, a correct delineation of the events of the conflict, carefully drawn by the pen and pencil, for the consideration and advantage of posterity. I entitle my work "A History of the Civil War," but I ask for it no higher consideration than that of a faithful Chronicle, having the form of history, and aspiring to perform its highest duty, namely: to inspire mankind with a love of justice and a hatred of its opposite, and of every thing that impedes the onward and upward march of humanity. This book was released on 2018-11-22 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harper's Pictorial History of the Civil War, Vol. 1 In 1765 the first Colonial Congress for redress of grievances assembled at New York. But'it was in no sense an authoritative body. It was composed of delegates from the several Colonial Assemblies, with three exceptions, who acted under special instructions. They set forth a Declaration of R1ghts and Grievances; they petitioned the King, and sent memorials to Parliament. But they only claimed all the privileges of Englishmen as their birthright, and therefore, protested against being taxed by'a body in which they were not represented. _their doings were warmly approved by the Assemblies and the people of all the colonies, and the first step was unconsciously taken toward the political union, the separate national existence, of the English race in America. The lapse of nine years, passed in the endurance of a common oppression from their common mother, and m continuous consultation as to their means of resistance, developed _rapidly a unity of feeling 1n the colo nies, which took form ia the Continental Congress, composed of leading men from twelve provinces, -which assembled 1n Philadelphia. Under the guid ance of this body the power of the British government was in the course of events defied, and the independence of the colonies declared and maintained; but at first it merely imitated its predecessor ln adopting a Declaration of Rights, in which the privileges of Englishmen and British subjects were claimed - most important of all, the right of being bound by no law to which they had not consented by their representatives: It took no active measure of resistance, and merely recommended one which may be called passive a voluntary association, pledging the 'associators to entire commercial non intercourse with Great Britain. -it rs desirable to bring to mind these well known facts in view of the character and the pretensions of the rebellion the course of which we are about to trace, and also of the1 grounds on which the government of the United States took up. Arms for its suppression. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial History of the Civil War in the United States of America, Vol. 2 An essential part of the original plan of the writer, and which has been carried out, was to make a personal visit to the principal battle-fields and other places of interest connected with the Civil War. This could not be done within the Con federate lines during the war, and it was difficult to do 'so in many places for several months after: the conflict had ceased. As much as possible of this labor was accomplished before the completion of the first volume, in which the events of the con flict, civil and military, to the close of the first battle of Bull's Run, are recorded. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Civil War in America, Vol. 1 From the commencement of our Government there have been two antagonistic principles contending for the mastery - Slavery and Freedom. In the very heart of our democracy, the element of the most haughty and intolerant aristocracy has been nurtured, by the institution of human bondage. The most repulsive features of the old European feudalism have thus been transplanted into our Republic. The slaveholders, accustomed to despotic power over the wretched serfs, whom they have driven, by the lash, to till their soil, have assumed a sort of baronial arrogance over all men who do not own slaves, and have claimed to be the only gentle men, and the legitimate rulers of this land. But freedom has outstripped slavery in this race. And, consequently, the slaveholders, unreconciled to the loss of supremacy, strive to destroy the temple of liberty, wish ing to raise themselves into lords and potentates, over the ruin of their country. The conflict in which our nation is now involved, is simply a desperate struggle, on the part of the slaveholders, to retain, by force of arms, that domination in the government of this Republic, which they had so long held, and which, by the natural operation of the ballot-box, they were slowly but surely losing. We have here, simply the repetition of that great conflict, which, for ages, has agitated our globe - the conflict between aristocratic usurpation and popular rights. The battle has assumed the most momentous attitude, since it arrays, on either side, all the intel lectual and material energies developed by the nineteenth century. This book was released on 2019-02-23 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War in America, Vol. 1 IT has been the author's purpose to write an accurate and interest ing history of the Civil War within moderate limits. In prepara tion for this work, he has visited all the principal. Battlefields, so as to see for himself the ground upon which the war was fought. This has brought him into contact with the people of the South and made him somewhat familiar with their character and habits, as well as their country and their occupations. It has enabled him to see with considerable accuracy the background Of the events with which he was concerned. Thus his preparation has not been altogether a labour with books. It has been One of Observation as well. And he has sought to transfer to his pages some of the im pressions he has thus received. From books his materials have been the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. For a copy Of which, comprising a hundred and thirty volumes with numerous maps and charts, the author is indebted to the Hon. Joseph J. Gill, sometime a Member of Congress from Ohio. For this and other kindness a heartfelt acknowledgment is here made in the hope that it will also perpetuate the remembrance of a friendship which continued unbroken for many years. The author has also given attention to other narratives of actual participants. While the works of many others have been consulted.
