Book Rural Life and Culture in the Upper Cumberland

Download or read book Rural Life and Culture in the Upper Cumberland written by Michael E. Birdwell and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2004-12-24 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tennessee History Book Award Finalist The Upper Cumberland region of Kentucky and Tennessee, often regarded as isolated and out of pace with the rest of the country, has a far richer history and culture than has been documented. The contributors to Rural Life and Culture in the Upper Cumberland discuss an extensive array of subjects, including popular music, movies, architecture, folklore, religion, and literature. Seventeen original essays by prominent scholars such as Lynwood Montell, Charles Wolfe, Allison Ensor, and Jeannette Keith uncover fascinating stories and personalities as they explore topics including wartime hero Alvin C. York, Socialist Party Tennessee gubernatorial candidate Kate Brockford Stockton, and even a thriving nudist colony, the Timberline Lodge.

Book Cookeville and Putnam County

Download or read book Cookeville and Putnam County written by and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Putnam County is a twice-told tale. After its original establishment in 1842 was declared unconstitutional, the county was reestablished in 1854. The county seat of Cookeville was named in honor of War of 1812 veteran and Tennessee state senator Richard F. Cooke, and the county name was adopted in honor of Revolutionary War veteran Gen. Israel Putnam. Relatively isolated until 1890 with the coming of the Tennessee Central Railroad, Cookeville and Putnam County have grown into a vibrant hub for the 14-county Upper Cumberland region of Tennessee. Located on the scenic Highland Rim some 70 miles east of Nashville, Cookeville has become a top retirement area with access to regional medical facilities, the Tennessee Technological University, and other amenities. Through the use of photographs from archival sources and private collections, Images of America: Cookeville and Putnam County captures the small town atmosphere and appealing qualities of this unique area of the Upper South.

This is an expanded edition of the project which was initially prepared for Putnam County's Bicentennial 1812-2012 and which was placed in Putnam County's Time Capsule to be opened in 2062. The project included pictures which were at least 50 years old of various sites around Putnam County. Pictures of the same sites were taken in September 2012, to provide a photographic history of how Putnam County changed over the years and to document how Putnam County looked in 2012. It includes pictures from all six towns in Putnam County, including Carmel, Kent, Patterson, Philipstown, Putnam Valley and Southeast. That also includes the hamlets of Brewster, Cold Spring, Garrison, Lake Peekskill, Mahopac, Nelsonville and Putnam Lake. Book A Bibliography of Tennessee History 1973 1996

Download or read book A Bibliography of Tennessee History 1973 1996 written by W. Calvin Dickinson and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With some 6,000 entries, A Bibliography of Tennessee History will prove to be an invaluable resource for anyone--students, historians, librarians, genealogists--engaged in researching Tennessee's rich and colorful past. A sequel to Sam B. Smith's invaluable 1973 work, Tennessee History: A Bibliography, this book follows a similar format and includes published books and essays, as well as many unpublished theses and dissertations, that have become available during the intervening years. The volume begins with sections on Reference, Natural History, and Native Americans. Its divisions then follow the major periods of the state's history: Before Statehood, State Development, Civil War, Late Nineteenth Century, Early Twentieth Century, and Late Twentieth Century. Sections on Literature and County Histories round out the book. Included is a helpful subject index that points the reader to particular persons, places, incidents, or topics. Substantial sections in this index highlight women's history and African American history, two areas in which scholarship has proliferated during the past two decades. The history of entertainment in Tennessee is also well represented in this volume, including, for example, hundreds of citations for writings about Elvis Presley and for works that treat Nashville and Memphis as major show business centers. The Literature section, meanwhile, includes citations for fiction and poetry relating to Tennessee history as well as for critical works about Tennessee writers. Throughout, the editors have strived to achieve a balance between comprehensive coverage and the need to be selective. The result is a volume that will benefit researchers for years to come. The Editors: W. Calvin Dickinson is professor of history at Tennessee Technological University. Eloise R. Hitchcock is head reference librarian at the University of the South.
