From its ancient indigenous origins to British colonisation followed by waves of European then international migration in the twentieth century, the island continent is home to people from all over the globe. Each new wave of settlers has had a profound impact on Australian society and culture. The Australian People documents the dramatic history of Australian settlement and describes the rich ethnic and cultural inheritance of the nation through the contributions of its people. It is one of the largest reference works of its kind, with approximately 250 expert contributors and almost one million words. Illustrated in colour and black and white, the book is both a comprehensive encyclopedia and a survey of the controversial debates about citizenship and multiculturalism now that Australia has attained the centenary of its federation.

Download or read book From Cornwall to Moonta migration and resettlement written by Dianne Griffin and published by Interactive Publications. This book was released on 2023-07-19 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1864. Cornwall. In the wake of the Agricultural Revolution, Benjamin and Emma Bowden decide to emigrate. They are pawns in a much bigger scheme, which is to divest Britain of its poor and send them to Wakefield’s Free-Colony of South Australia. During the long journey, the sailing ship is tossed like flotsam, and they eagerly disembark in Adelaide. Here they work on Samuel Davenport’s farm.To make more money, they move to Moonta Mines and live on the mining lease, where danger is all around them, until Ben and William Trethowan finally acquire their freehold properties. Clearing Mallee scrub from the land is brutal and the isolation daunting. Droughts, anthrax, financial crises and typhoid hover and strike. The large Bowden and Trethowan families struggle just to survive during the Great Depression. Will their sons ever own farms of their own? Should they have stayed in Cornwall?

Book The New Imperial Histories Reader

Download or read book The New Imperial Histories Reader written by Stephen Howe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, imperial history has experienced a newfound vigour, dynamism and diversity. There has been an explosion of new work in the field, which has been driven into even greater prominence by contemporary world events. However, this resurgence has brought with it disputes between those who are labelled as exponents of a ‘new imperial history’ and those who can, by default, be termed old imperial historians. This collection not only gathers together some of the most important, influential and controversial work which has come to be labelled ‘new imperial history’, but also presents key examples of innovative recent writing across the broader fields of imperial and colonial studies. This book is the perfect companion for any student interested in empires and global history.

Book Museums and the Working Class

Download or read book Museums and the Working Class written by Adele Chynoweth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Museums and the Working Class is the first book to take an intersectional and international approach to the issues of economic diversity and class within the field of museum studies. Bringing together 16 contributors from eight countries, this book has emerged from the significant global dialogue concerning museums’ obligation to be inclusive, participate in meaningful engagement and advocate for social change. As part of the push for museums to be more accessible and inclusive, museums have been challenged to critically examine their power relationships and how these are played out in what they collect, whose stories they exhibit and who is made to feel welcome in their halls. This volume will further this professional and academic debate through the discussion of class. Contributions to the book will also reinforce the importance of the working class – not only in collection and exhibition policy, but also for the organisational psychology of institutions. Museums and the Working Class is essential reading for scholars and students of museum, gallery and heritage studies, cultural studies, sociology, labour studies and history. It will also serve as a source of honest and research-led inspiration to practitioners working in museums, galleries, libraries, archives and at heritage sites around the world.

Book A British Enterprise in Brazil

Download or read book A British Enterprise in Brazil written by Marshall C. Eakin and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marshall Eakin presents what may be the most detailed study ever written about the operations of a foreign business in Latin America and the first scholarly, book-length study of any foreign business enterprise in Brazil. Between 1830 and 1970 the British-owned St. John d’el Rey Mining Company, Ltd. constructed a diverse business conglomerate around Minas Gerais, South America’s largest gold mine, in Nova Lima. Until the 1950s the company was the largest industrial firm and the largest taxpayer in Brazil’s most populous state. Utilizing company and local archives, Eakin shows that the company was surprisingly ineffective in translating economic success into political influence in Brazil. The most impressive impact of the British operation was at the local level, transforming a small, agrarian community into a sizable industrial city. Virtually a company town, Nova Lima experienced a small-scale industrial revolution as the community made the transition from the largest industrial slave complex in Brazil to a working-class city torn by labor strife and violence between communists and their opponents.
