Book No Picnic

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julian Thompson
  • Publisher : Pen and Sword
  • Release : 2008-10-16
  • ISBN : 1473816807
  • Pages : 267 pages

Download or read book No Picnic written by Julian Thompson and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2008-10-16 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new edition of the classic Falklands War memoir “which many regard as the most perceptive description of the momentous events of April to June 1982” (Maritime Adviser). Major General Julian Thompson first wrote this account (previously published as No Picnic) when what happened in the spring and summer of 1982 was fresh in his mind. As Commander of 3 Commando Brigade, he was at the heart of the planning and conduct of the Falklands War. Under his direct command had been the Royal Marine Commandos and the two battalions of the Parachute Regiment who conducted the lion’s share of the fighting. No one therefore is better qualified to tell the extraordinary story of their taking of the Falkland Islands from the Argentinians. The author, now a celebrated military historian, has revised his early book and added for this 25th Anniversary edition more of his own personal thoughts and impressions. It is all too easy to overlook just how perilous and risky a venture this expedition to the depths of the Southern Hemisphere was. Victory and defeat hung in the balance. Even those who feel they know about this most remarkable of wars will learn more from reading this classic account. “A fascinating perspective on the war from a key participant and a valuable insight into the mind of a field commander.” —Flying in Ireland

Book Picnic

  • Author : Dave Dalton Thomas
  • Publisher : Texas A&M University Press
  • Release : 2024-09-02
  • ISBN : 164843195X
  • Pages : 395 pages

Download or read book Picnic written by Dave Dalton Thomas and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-02 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1973, a forty-year-old country musician named Willie Nelson, inspired by a failed music festival the year before, decided he was going to hold his own party. He would stage it in the same remote and rocky field where the previous festival had withered. And he’d do it in July: not the hottest part of the Central Texas summer, but “damn sure close enough,” according to music journalist Dave Dalton Thomas. As unlikely as it seemed in 1973, Willie kept the event going, minus a year off here and there, for half a century. Thomas has attended nearly every Willie Nelson Fourth of July Picnic since 1995, finding joy in an event some music reporters have compared to “death marches and prison labor.” For the last 20 years, Thomas has researched the history of the Picnic, chronicling the brutal heat and the quirky and sometimes illegal antics of fans, musicians, and others. Thomas has watched the Picnic evolve over the decades, as Willie and his audience have evolved. He has interviewed participants, including artists, organizers, promoters, and even a few colorful hangers-on. While reviewing ten of the Picnics in detail—each chosen for its significance in the overarching development of the event—Thomas also includes basic facts about each gathering, from the beginning to the present, with the addition of pertinent information about the “off years,” when the Picnic was on temporary hiatus for one reason or another. In his introduction, Thomas quotes country musician Johnny Bush as he recalls trying to talk Nelson out of the notion of holding the first Picnic. “Willie, there ain’t no way in hell a bunch of cowboys are going to come out in the hundred-degree heat to watch us pick our guitars.” As Thomas records them, Bush’s next words were “he proved me wrong.”

Book America s Sailors in the Great War

Download or read book America s Sailors in the Great War written by Lisle A. Rose and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honorable Mention, 2016 Lyman Awards, presented by the North American Society for Oceanic History This book is a thrillingly-written story of naval planes, boats, and submarines during World War I. When the U.S. entered World War I in April 1917, America’s sailors were immediately forced to engage in the utterly new realm of anti-submarine warfare waged on, below and above the seas by a variety of small ships and the new technology of airpower. The U.S. Navy substantially contributed to the safe trans-Atlantic passage of a two million man Army that decisively turned the tide of battle on the Western Front even as its battleship division helped the Royal Navy dominate the North Sea. Thoroughly professionalized, the Navy of 1917–18 laid the foundations for victory at sea twenty-five years later.

Book Conflict and Leadership

Download or read book Conflict and Leadership written by Christian Muntean and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2018-04-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflict is one of the greatest sources of tolerated business expenses and loss. This is despite the fact that this expense and loss can, in most cases, be easily turned around to revenue and gain. In the nonprofit world one of the greatest inhibitors of mission success is not that there isn’t enough funding, or the challenging nature of the cause. It is the simple fact that teams struggle to work well together. What if conflict was the starting point for developing trust? What if it catalyzed a deeper, more meaningful understanding between team members? What if it was crucial for building stronger and more powerful organizations? Last of all, what if there were simple steps you could take to automatically help your teams communicate and work together more easily? This book shows you how.
