Book Pickwickian Studies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pickwickian Studies Classic Reprint written by Percy Fitzgerald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pickwickian Studies This ancient Inn is associated with some pleasant and diverting Pickwickian memories. We think of the adventure with "the lady in the yellow curl papers" and the double-bedded room, just as we would recall some "side splitting" farce in which Buckstone or Toole once made our jaws ache. As all the world knows, the "Great White Horse" is found in the good old town of Ipswich, still flourishes, and is scarcely altered from the days when Mr. Pickwick put up there. Had it not been thus associated, Ipswich would have remained a place obscure and scarcely known, for it has little to attract save one curious old house and some old churches; and for the theatrical antiquary, the remnant of the old theatre in Tacket Street, where Garrick first appeared as an amateur under the name of Lyddal, about a hundred and sixty years ago, and where now the Salvation Army "performs" in his stead. The touch of "Boz" kindled the old bones into life, it peopled the narrow, winding streets with the Grummers, Nupkins Jingles, Pickwick and his followers; with the immortal lady aforesaid in her yellow curl papers, to say nothing of Mr. Peter Magnus. Book In the Highest Degree Volume Two

Download or read book In the Highest Degree Volume Two written by P. H. Brazier and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theological and philosophical works of C. S. Lewis were grounded in the argument from reason (being a form of revelation that predates nature and relates to the divine; i.e., the Word of God, Christ the Logos). These essays provide some understanding of the essentials to Lewis’s philosophical theology—that is, the essentia, “in the highest degree.” Lewis’s corpus can seem disparate, but here we find unity in his aims, objectives, and methodology, a consistency that demonstrates the deep roots of his philosophical theology in Scripture, Greek philosophy, patristic and medieval theology, and some of the Reformers, all framed by a reasoned discipline from a perceptive and critical mind: method and form, content and reason, for the glory of God. From an analysis of reason to the evidence of Christ as the light of the world across human endeavors and religions, a doctrine of election, and an understanding of Scripture (“the Philosophy of the Incarnation,” as Lewis termed it), in fundamental arguments with various modern/liberal theologians, we find evidence for the actuality of the incarnation: the divinity of Christ.
