Book Picked Up Patched Up and Sent Home

Download or read book Picked Up Patched Up and Sent Home written by Carl Walker and published by Robert Hale. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the things that has been missing during the debate over the NHS is something that speaks to the experiences of normal folk and reminds people just what an amazing thing a public national health service really is. Like so many British people, I have used the NHS for a number of reasons throughout my life—some serious, others less so—but where would I be now without it? I honestly don't know." In this funny, irreverent book, Carl Walker represents the average stories of average people whose lives are routinely and often unnoticeably held together by the people who work in the NHS. These are the people who patch us up, sew us up, radiate, advise, scan, plaster, console, repair, inject, and support us, before delivering us back home to carry out our everyday affairs. A sharply observed collection of sometimes outrageous, often excruciating, but always entertaining accounts of different interactions with one of Britain's greatest treasures. All royalties from the sale of this book will go to the NHS Support Federation.

Cracker Black, the brains behind the operation has a 50 gallon pot making moonshine for a local man named Hollis. Now Hollis is a nefarious character ran several juke joints out on 78 hwy on the strip. When word got round to Cracker his shine was wanted in Memphis and St Louis he had to ramp up the production. He hires two black fellers Big George and Little Willie right out the cotton patch. They are able to work at night in the woods and not be seen by the law because of them being black. When the sleepy little town's folk turn off their lights for the night, the moonshiners go to work making that good old Alabama Shine. Life was good, again.....

Book From the Cotton Patch to Ph D

Download or read book From the Cotton Patch to Ph D written by Wendell R. Arnold and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As agronomy is the care of the soil and Dr. Arnold's life work, he shares with the reader his care for the soul as he travels through life in this insightful autobiography. The reader becomes a visitor in the lively dialog among family members and colleagues as Dr. Arnold reveals conflicts and resolutions in the world of faith and science. His subtle sense of humor adds a light touch to this amazing journey." - Anne S. Owens, President Samar Publishing Inc. "Wendell Arnold's beautifully written story of his life is so intriguing I couldn't put it down. When you read this book, you will discover the author is a man who dearly loves his family and friends. Furthermore, his completely committed faith in our Lord is a role model for all Christians." - Doris Hodges "Faith and Science. Can one person truly emote to these two different worlds? In this book, the autobiographer reveals his unwavering deep faith, while overcoming many challenges as he lived a professional life as a well respected and successful scientist. Read on and discover a true story that is deep in meaning, yet inter spaced with happy family memories and light diversions. The reader will have much to ponder long after the end of the book." - Jo Watkins "Science and religion walk hand in hand in Wendell Arnold's journey from a farm boy to the holder of a Doctorate in phytopathology and numerous patents in the environmental field. In From the Cotton Patch to Ph.D. we encounter a warm and readable story of a man's life defined by scientific inquiry and his relationship to Jesus Christ." - Bob Libby, Author and Episcopal Priest "Wendell Arnold's story of his Christian walk in life's journey is inspiring, heart-warming and a window into mid-century American life. Dr. Arnold's disarming and self-deprecating account of his experiences in family, youth, marriage, professional life and retirement paint a personal portrait of how to be aware of Christ's constant presence in our daily lives. Sit back and enjoy your travels with Wendell, knowing that you will find strength in his example." - Ruth D. Foss, Diocesan President, Daughters of the King. The title From the Cotton Patch to Ph.D. is by its very nature autobiographical. Wendell Arnold tells about being from a family of nine kids whose parents are share croppers. The experience in the cotton patch to dealing with corporate political challenges, environmental issues and legal avenues blended with raising a family paints the picture of a managed life. He shares his profound experience with God in his life as the adventures take more twists and turns than a rattlesnake chasing his prey. Dr. Arnold is a scientist with a BS and MS in Agronomy and a Ph.D. in Plant Sciences. He holds over ten patents on compound efficacy to control plant pathogens and is the author or co-author of over 35 scientific papers that have been published in refereed journals. Dr. Arnold skillfully tells his intriguing story of growing up picking cotton and becoming a world renowned scientist with faith in God. His story is a must read for those who think that religion, science and environmental improvement don't mix.

Book The Patch of Heaven Collection

Download or read book The Patch of Heaven Collection written by Kelly Long and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sarah’s Garden Quite by accident, Sarah King has fallen in love. But this love is forbidden, and could cost her everything she holds dear. Tucked into the majesty of Pennsylvania's Allegheny Mountains is a garden Sarah King has been nurturing for years. She never feels more alive than when she is alone with her thoughts and her Creator among the delicate rows of plants. But then duty calls her away from her beloved garden and into a world she knows little about. Grant Williams, a handsome young veterinarian, has left the city to open a rural practice among the Amish. Within minutes of meeting shy but feisty Sarah King, he is captivated by her. As their feelings grow for one another, Sarah insists they can never be together. Marrying Grant would mean being uprooted from her home, her family, and her community. Throughout the cold Pennsylvania winter, with her garden tucked away until spring, Sarah begins crafting a quilt that illustrates her pain. Can anything lasting blossom from a love that's forbidden? Lilly’s Wedding Quilt Handsome, headstrong Jacob offers Lilly his hand in marriage, but his heart belongs to someone else. While Lilly Lapp has loved Jacob for years, she wouldn't compete with Sarah King, the woman Jacob was determined to marry. But when Sarah marries another, Jacob spontaneously agrees to wed Lilly. Lilly divides her time between teaching the local Amish children and caring for her widowed mother who suffers from depression. Lilly's faith comforts her, but her heart still longs to be the sole object of Jacob's affection. As the days slip by, Lilly decides that hoping is too risky and vows to protect her heart. But God is subtly as work, and as winter turns to spring, their hearts awaken. The furthest thing from Lilly's mind is her Amish wedding quilt, a traditional gift for new brides. And the person she'd least suspect is the one making it. Like stray pieces of fabric quilted into a new design, Jacob and Lilly's marriage begins to bind them together in ways neither expected. Threads of Grace Grace’s beauty almost cost her everything. This new start is all she has left. When Grace Beiler was only a girl, she was married off to an older Amish man in order to save her family’s farm. Years later, she finds herself newly widowed and a mother to a young son. She has finally fled her sad past and plans to settle into a quiet life in Pennsylvania. As soon as she arrives, she captures the attention of Seth Wyse, the most eligible bachelor in Pine Creek. Seth is candid about his feelings for her, and for her son Abel, but Grace is determined to protect her heart. Her determination falters when her brother-in-law reveals the troubling contents of her late husband’s will. Seth offers Grace his hand in marriage, and thus a means of escape. But despite his having saved her from another loveless marriage, Grace is slow to trust her new husband. And as the months wear on, Seth wonders if he has made a mistake. But God is quietly at work in their hearts, and Seth and Grace soon discover that threads of grace bind them together in a tapestry rich in hope and love.

Book excerpt: In honor of what would have been Clarence Jordan's one hundredth birthday and the seventieth anniversary of Koinonia Farm, the first Clarence Jordan Symposium convened in historic Sumter County, Georgia, in 2012, gathering theologians, historians, actors, and activists in civil rights, housing, agriculture, and fair-trade businesses to celebrate a remarkable individual and his continuing influence. Clarence Jordan (1912-1969), a farmer and New Testament Greek scholar, was the author of the Cotton Patch versions of the New Testament and the founder of Koinonia Farm, a small but influential religious community in southwest Georgia. Roots in the Cotton Patch, Volume 1 contains Symposium presentations addressing Clarence's influence as a storyteller and contextual preacher and prophet, his pacifist witness in a violent and segregated South, and the contemporary meaning of his life's work in Christian community. Uniting these powerful essays is the obvious impact Jordan's life has had on so many. His life and work continue to inspire a new generation of activists, seminary students, and people in search of the meaning of Christian community.
