The Eternal City emerges not only as an intensely physical place but also as a romantic idea onto which artists and writers projected their own imaginations and longings. The book will appeal to a wide audience of readers interested in the history of art, architecture, and photography, the Romantic poets, and other writers from Byron to Henry James. It will also attract the interest of historians of urbanism, landscape, and Italy. Nonspecialists and armchair travelers will enjoy the diverse literary and artistic responses to Rome.

Book A Walking Tour Around Piazza Navona

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul Den Arend
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2016-04-05
  • ISBN : 9781532735653
  • Pages : 46 pages

Download or read book A Walking Tour Around Piazza Navona written by Paul Den Arend and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this little guidebook I take you on a walk around the area of Piazza Navona in Rome. In Rome, we call this area the Centro Storico, the historic center. This is, at least according to me, the most picturesque area of Rome. You find many world famous buildings and squares, but also small cobblestone streets and houses in the beautiful colors of Rome (yellow, red and gold). Often the main squares are filled with tourists, but if you walk just a few streets away, you will find yourself relatively alone. Remember that most tourists take the same streets to go from highlight to highlight. A little walk around can make a big difference. On this walk, I let you relatively free. Rome is best discovered by a typical Italian passegiata, a gentle stroll. I will show you on some small maps where the different highlights can be found. You can follow my route, or just find your own way from piazza to piazza and church to church.

Book The Palazzo Pamphilj in Piazza Navona

Download or read book The Palazzo Pamphilj in Piazza Navona written by Stephanie C. Leone and published by Harvey Miller. This book was released on 2008 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this first-ever comprehensive book on the architecture of the Palazzo Pamphilj, Stephanie Leone identifies the construction of this palace, built for Pope Innocent X Pamphilj (1644-55) and his sister-inlaw, Donna Olimpia Maidalchini, as the catalyst for the renovation of Piazza Navona. Previously, misconceptions had hindered an accurate understanding of the palace's history, architecture, patronage, and urbanism and of its place in architectural history." "Based on extensive archival research, an analysis of the architectural drawings, and an examination of the building fabric, Leone presents a fundamentally revised building history that hinges on architectural collaboration between the patrons, architects, and architectural adviser. She explores the relationship between residential architecture and social identity to show that Innocent X sought to insert the Pamphilj physically and metaphorically into the heart of the city as a means of communicating his family's preeminent position in the competitive world of papal Rome." "In analyzing the Pamphilj's residence in Piazza Navona over the course of two centuries, Leone argues that the Palazzo Pamphilj and its owners were both protagonists and products of their environs. As retold in this book, the story of the Palazzo Pamphilj in Piazza Navona rests at the core of architecture and urbanism in mid-seventeenthcentury Rome."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: “I resisted, but she drew me back. I stayed away, but she beckoned me. I distanced myself, but she haunted me. I even rejected her but she did not abandon me...” This work of nonfiction is divided into chapters in which the reader experiences aspects of art, culture, history and the present through the eyes of the writer and of the inhabitants of Rome, past and present. Show Less She Seduced Me is that rare book in which the reader becomes part of a magical world in which places, monuments and artists come alive through their stories. In this case, however, that world is Rome and the reader becomes a participant in the ebb and flow of the city and gains insight into why so many have fallen in love with Rome despite its faults. The journey commences with the reader accompanying the author who, standing in front of Michelangelo’s Moses statue, mouth agape, almost hears the artist scream at his creation: “Speak!” From this an odyssey of wonder begins: what is the story behind the Trevi fountain, behind that rock in the middle of the Roman Forum, behind all those priests and nuns everywhere, behind everything one stumbles upon, wonders about and takes selfies in front of? The quest is to uncover those stories. Author and reader continue to explore the life in the piazzas, experience camaraderie with street performers, see history through all the senses, get lost in Rome, observe Americans and foreigners, discover unique places to eat, speak with Romans, explore the houses of Nero, Augustus and Livia, encounter Caravaggio and chats with expats. This work is a virtual tour through a magical city that educates and enthralls.
