Book Nikolai Medtner

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2018
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 140 pages

Download or read book Nikolai Medtner written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Doctor of Musical Arts document introduces a new source for the Piano Sonata in F Minor, Op. 5, by Nikolai Medtner (1880-1951), deposited in the Special Collections Library of the University of Virginia. This new source is a printed copy of the 1904 publication of the Op. 5 Sonata, which is the first edition. It contains handwritten annotations and corrections which appear to be revision notes by the composer. However, many of these markings do not appear in the 1955 "revised edition" by Belaieff, nor in the 1959 Muzgiz edition. Inscribed on the cover page is a statement that the Sonata is dedicated to the composer's brother Emil Karlovich Medtner (1872-1936), signed and dated April 6, 1904. This dedication does not appear to be published in any of the editions of the Sonata. The inscription also says Medtner gives this "precious" copy to his friend Alfred J. Swan (1890-1970). Although the existence of the score was mentioned by Swan in his 1967 article, "Das Leben Nikolai Medtners," no other writing has acknowledged the significance of this score. The purpose of this document is to provide evidence for the authenticity of the score and discuss why it is important with respect to Medtner scholarship. The annotations and corrections by Medtner reveal a true version of the Sonata that is unique from the existing editions. To illustrate the significance of these penciled-in markings, a comparative study with two other editions will comprise a portion of this document. These revisions include pitches, dynamics, pedaling, expressive markings, tempi, fingerings, and others. The implications of this version on a performer's interpretation would be too substantial to ignore. It is hoped that this new source will be of interest to Medtner scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first publication in 1990, Brahms and His World has become a key text for listeners, performers, and scholars interested in the life, work, and times of one of the nineteenth century's most celebrated composers. In this substantially revised and enlarged edition, the editors remain close to the vision behind the original book while updating its contents to reflect new perspectives on Brahms that have developed over the past two decades. To this end, the original essays by leading experts are retained and revised, and supplemented by contributions from a new generation of Brahms scholars. Together, they consider such topics as Brahms's relationship with Clara and Robert Schumann, his musical interactions with the "New German School" of Wagner and Liszt, his influence upon Arnold Schoenberg and other young composers, his approach to performing his own music, and his productive interactions with visual artists. The essays are complemented by a new selection of criticism and analyses of Brahms's works published by the composer's contemporaries, documenting the ways in which Brahms's music was understood by nineteenth- and early twentieth-century audiences in Europe and North America. A new selection of memoirs by Brahms's friends, students, and early admirers provides intimate glimpses into the composer's working methods and personality. And a catalog of the music, literature, and visual arts dedicated to Brahms documents the breadth of influence exerted by the composer upon his contemporaries.

Book Vaughan Williams on Music

Download or read book Vaughan Williams on Music written by Ralph Vaughan Williams and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concert audiences have an enduring affection for the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams; a composer of dance, symphony, opera, song, hymnody, and film music, serious scholarship on his music is currently enjoying a revival. 2008 marks the 50th anniversary of Vaughan Williams passing. This collection brings together a host of lively writings, some for the first time, and many for the first time since their initial publication by one of the most articulate, beloved and engaging English composers. Making available essays, articles, broadcasts, and speech transcripts from 1901-1958, Vaughan Williams on Music exemplifies the multi-faceted nature of his contributions: active supporter of amateur music and English music, a leader in the folksong revival, educator, performer, and polemicist. Vaughan Williams was one of the cultural giants of his day, a figure of iconic stature whose influence stretched far beyond musical circles; his friendships with Bertrand Russell and G. M. Trevelyan, and his tireless work on behalf of a variety of organizations and causes, from Jewish refugees to the Third Programme, gave him a unique place in British national life. He also had a powerful influence in the United States, at a time when the international relationship was approaching its zenith. Through all these perspectives, the words are unmistakably those of a practicing composer; a young composer at the turn of the last century, trying to find his own musical voice amid widely diverse stylistic influences of the dominant and successful figures of Brahms, Strauss, and Tchaikovsky, and a mature composer in the mid-century, having found that glorious voice which continues to resound across the globe. The volume will be an important contribution to the literature not only on British music, but also on nineteenth- and twentieth-century British cultural and intellectual life as a whole, placing Vaughan Williams' political and aesthetic thought in a broader cultural perspective.

Book Ludwig van Beethoven 1927

Download or read book Ludwig van Beethoven 1927 written by Harvey Grace and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was first published in 1927, on the centenary of Beethoven’s death, as part of the Masters of Music series. The author was an established biographer of organ composers, such as The Organ Works of Bach. Attributing Beethoven’s disagreeable demeanour to his childhood, the author embarks on a passionate defence of Beethoven’s essential nobility of character, hoping to assuage the then-prevalent anti-Beethoven chill and to encourage readers to discover Beethoven anew. The volume covers an overview of Beethoven’s life, followed by his personality and an assessment of his works in an exploration of the most important characteristics of Beethoven’s works and their influence on his successors.
