Book Pi sup p ELASTIC SCATTERING AND SINGLE PION PRODUCTION AT 0 939 BEV c thesis

Download or read book Pi sup p ELASTIC SCATTERING AND SINGLE PION PRODUCTION AT 0 939 BEV c thesis written by and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of pi /sup -/-p elastic scattering and singlepion production nt 0.939 Bev/c is reported. Fivehundred and forty two-prong interactions in the 10-in. UCRL liquid-hydrogen bubble chamber were classified. Emphasis is given the methods used in the kinematic classification of events. The total cross section for pi /sup -/-p interactions is found to be 53.3 plus or minus 2.4 mb. The elastic-scattering cross section is 21.0 plus or minus 1.1 mb. The elastic differential cross section displays a narrow diffraction peak in the forward direction. In the centerof-mass system, 35.6% of the elastic events have pion scatters into the backward hemisphere. In single-pion production the ratio of the number of pi /sup +/ to pi /sup 0/ productions is 2.49. The momentum distributions of the charged particles do not correspond to the phase-space distributions predicted. (auth).

Book PION PROTON ELASTIC SCATTERING IN THE ENERGY RANGE 300 TO 700 Mev thesis

Download or read book PION PROTON ELASTIC SCATTERING IN THE ENERGY RANGE 300 TO 700 Mev thesis written by and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential cross sections for elastic pi -p scattering were measured at eight energies for positive pions and seven energies for negative pions. Energies ranged from 310to 650 Mev. Fifty-one scintillation counters and a matrix-coincidence system were used to measure simultaneously elastic events at 21 angles and charged inelastic events at 78 pi -p angle pairs. Events were detected by a coincidence of pulses indicating the presence of an incident pion, scattered pion, and recoil proton and the results were stored in the memory of a pulse-height analyzer. Various corrections were applied to the dnta and a leastsquares fit was made to the results at each energy. The form of the fitting function was a power series in the cosine of the center-of-mass angle of the scattered pion. Integrntion under the fitted curves gave values for the total elastic cross section. The importance of certain angularmomentum states, particularly the D/sub 13/ state near 600 Mev, is discussed. Several possible explanations are given of the enhancement in the pi /sup -/-p cross sections near 600 Mev. (auth).

Book Melting Hadrons Boiling Quarks From Hagedorn Temperature to Ultra Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions at CERN

Download or read book Melting Hadrons Boiling Quarks From Hagedorn Temperature to Ultra Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions at CERN written by Johann Rafelski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-21 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how the study of multi-hadron production phenomena in the years after the founding of CERN culminated in Hagedorn's pioneering idea of limiting temperature, leading on to the discovery of the quark-gluon plasma -- announced, in February 2000 at CERN. Following the foreword by Herwig Schopper -- the Director General (1981-1988) of CERN at the key historical juncture -- the first part is a tribute to Rolf Hagedorn (1919-2003) and includes contributions by contemporary friends and colleagues, and those who were most touched by Hagedorn: Tamás Biró, Igor Dremin, Torleif Ericson, Marek Gaździcki, Mark Gorenstein, Hans Gutbrod, Maurice Jacob, István Montvay, Berndt Müller, Grazyna Odyniec, Emanuele Quercigh, Krzysztof Redlich, Helmut Satz, Luigi Sertorio, Ludwik Turko, and Gabriele Veneziano. The second and third parts retrace 20 years of developments that after discovery of the Hagedorn temperature in 1964 led to its recognition as the melting point of hadrons into boiling quarks, and to the rise of the experimental relativistic heavy ion collision program. These parts contain previously unpublished material authored by Hagedorn and Rafelski: conference retrospectives, research notes, workshop reports, in some instances abbreviated to avoid duplication of material, and rounded off with the editor's explanatory notes. About the editor: Johann Rafelski is a theoretical physicist working at The University of Arizona in Tucson, USA. Bor n in 1950 in Krakow, Poland, he received his Ph.D. with Walter Greiner in Frankfurt, Germany in 1973. Rafelski arrived at CERN in 1977, where in a joint effort with Hagedorn he contributed greatly to the establishment of the relativistic heavy ion collision, and quark-gluon plasma research fields. Moving on, with stops in Frankfurt and Cape Town, to Arizona, he invented and developed the strangeness quark flavor as the signature of quark-gluon plasma.

Book Fundamentals of Dairy Chemistry

Download or read book Fundamentals of Dairy Chemistry written by Noble P. Wong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Dairy Chemistry has always been a reference text which has attempted to provide a complete treatise on the chemistry of milk and the relevant research. The third edition carries on in that format which has proved successful over four previous editions (Fun damentals of Dairy Science 1928, 1935 and Fundamentals of Dairy Chemistry 1965, 1974). Not only is the material brought up-to-date, indeed several chapters have been completely re-written, but attempts have been made to streamline this edition. In view of the plethora of research related to dairy chemistry, authors were asked to reduce the number of references by eliminating the early, less significant ones. In addition, two chapters have been replaced with subjects which we felt deserved attention: "Nutritive Value of Dairy Foods" and "Chemistry of Processing. " Since our society is now more attuned to the quality of the food it consumes and the processes necessary to preserve that quality, the addition of these topics seemed justified. This does not minimize the importance of the information in the deleted chapters, "Vitamins of Milk" and "Frozen Dairy Products. " Some of the mate rial in these previous chapters has been incorporated into the new chapters; furthermore, the information in these chapters is available in the second edition, as a reprint from ADSA (Vitamins in Milk and Milk Products, November 1965) or in the many texts on ice cream manufac ture.

Download or read book Hot Hadronic Matter written by Jean Letessier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has seen the development of the operational understanding of fun damental interactions within the standard model. This has detoured our attention from the great enigmas posed by the dynamics and collective behavior of strongly interacting particles. Discovered more than 30 years ago, the thermal nature of the hadronic particle spectra has stimulated considerable theoretical effort, which so far has failed to 'confirm' on the basis of microscopic interactions the origins of this phenomenon. However, a highly successful Statistical Bootstrap Model was developed by Rolf Hagedorn at CERN about 30 years ago, which has led us to consider the 'boiling hadronic matter' as a transient state in the trans formation of hadronic particles into their melted form which we call Quark-GIuon-Plasma (QGP). Today, we return to seek detailed understanding of the thermalization processes of hadronic matter, equipped on the theoretical side with the knowledge of the fundamental strong interaction theory, the quantum chromo-dynamics (QCD), and recognizing the im portant role of the complex QCD-vacuum structure. On the other side, we have developed new experimental tools in the form of nuclear relativistic beams, which allow to create rather extended regions in space-time of Hot Hadronic Matter. The confluence of these new and recent developments in theory and experiment led us to gather together from June 27 to July 1, 1994, at the Grand Hotel in Divonne-Ies-Bains, France, to discuss and expose the open questions and issues in our field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: to our own also needs to be understood. Such unification may also require that the supersymmetry group possess irreducible representations with infinite reductiori on the Poincare subgroup, to accommodate an infinite set of particles. Such possibilities were 5 envisaged long ago and have recently reappeared in Kaluza-Klein . 6 d' . th 7 S . l' th supergraVlty an m superstnng eory. upersymmetry Imp Ies at forces that are mediated by bose exchange must be complemented by forces that are due to the exchange of fermions. The masslessness of neutrinos is suggestive-we continue to favor the idea that neutrinos are fundamental to weak interactions, that they will finally play a more central role than the bit part assigned to them in Weinberg-Salam theory. There seems to be little room for doubting that supersymmetry is badly broken-so where should one be looking for the first tangible manifestations of it? It is remarkable that the successes that can be legitimately claimed for supersymmetry are all in the domain of massless particles and fields. Supergravity is not renormalizable, but it is an improvement (in this respect) over ordinary quantum gravity. Finite super Yang-Mills theories are not yet established, but there is now a strong concensus that they soon will be. In both cases massless fields are involved in an essential way.
