Book The Production and Decay of Hypernuclei

Download or read book The Production and Decay of Hypernuclei written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypernuclei have been studied for the last 35 years using several techniques. Since 1970, the {sup A}Z (K−, [pi]−) {sub {Lambda}}{sup A}Z strangeness-exchange reaction has been used at CERN, BNL, and KEK to produce hypernuclei and study their spectroscopic properties. These studies also include experiments where decay gamma rays and hypernuclear weak decay products are detected in coincidence with hypernuclear production. Recent experiments at BNL and KEK have proven the utility of the {sup A}Z ([pi], K) {sub {Lambda}}{sup A}Z reaction to study hypernuclear spectroscopy. Although I have no hope of covering this field in much detail, I write this paper as an introduction to the subject and highlights some of the recent experimental developments. 37 refs., 6 figs., 2 tabs.

Book Hypernuclear Physics with the pi K Reaction

Download or read book Hypernuclear Physics with the pi K Reaction written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of hypernuclei affords unique insights into the nature of hadronic forces beyond those obtainable from ordinary nuclear physics research. A hypernucleus consists of one or more hyperons bound to a nuclear core. In the SU(3) classification, [Lambda], [Sigma], and [Xi] hyperons occupy the same octet representation of spin-parity /1/2/ baryons as the neutron and proton, the familiar constituents of ordinary nuclei. The [Lambda] and [Sigma] possess strangeness S = -1 and isotopic spin I = 0, 1, respectively, while the /Xi/ has S = /minus/2, I = /1/2/. In the underlying quark picture, the [Lambda] and /Sigma/ have the flavor structure s(ud)/sub I=0, 1/, compared to the combination uud for the proton. The strange quark, s, carries the strangeness quantum number S = /minus/1, which makes it distinguishable from the S = 0 u and d quarks. The lowest-lying hyperon is the /Lambda/, with a mass of 1,115.6 MeV/c2, some 177 MeV/c2 heavier than the proton. The study of the behavior of a hyperon embedded in the nuclear medium, through the theoretical analysis of level spectra, sheds light on the nature of the hyperon-nucleon (YN) effective interaction, i.e. on the role of the strange quark in strong interactions. This paper investigates the ([pi], K/sup +/) reactions that produce hypernuclei. 32 refs., 5 figs., 2 tabs.

This book was released on 1995-05-31 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of hadronic and nuclear probes with protons and electrons in the energy range of a few GeV is of great importance for the understanding of the properties of nucleons and mesons as well as of their interaction. Experimental results from studies with these beams provide the basis for the development and the tests of theoretical approaches in the energy regime of non-perturbative QCD. They can also clarify the effect of the nuclear medium on elementary reactions. The conference has reviewed the present status of this field of research. The topics have beenThe conference topics comprised investigations near energy thresholds in the tradition of the conferences on Particle Production near Threshold in Nashville, IN, USA, 1990, and Uppsala, Sweden, 1992.

Book excerpt: This volume of the International School of Physics Enrico Fermi is dedicated to Valerio Filippini. He devoted his life to physics. Valerio Filippini was born in Somma Lombardo (Milano) on December 8, 1958. He obtained the Master Degree in Physics at the University of Pavia in 1982, cum laude. After a working parenthesis at an industrial firm, he became Research Physicist of INFN, Sezione di Pavia, in 1988 and was promoted Senior Research Physicist in 1993. He participated to the experiments PS 179 (TOFRADUPP) and PS 201 (Obelix) at LEAR (CERN), FINUDA at LNF and ATHENA at AD (CERN). His outstanding scientific contributions were provided in the OBELIX and FINUDA experiments. Nobody could compete with Filippini in exploiting at best the daily-evoluting performances of the computing tools for the needs of the experiments, both for on-line and off-line purposes. The FINUDA experiment collected physics data immediately after the roll-in thanks to the reliability and simplicity of the on-line system designed and assembled by the physicist. However, he was not only a 'Clavier Physicist' but a complete Scientist: he also leaded the Pavia Group in designing and providing advanced detectors, and in developing mathematical methods for the analysis of the data. His scientific contributions are documented by about 90 publications on refereed international journals, about 100 contributions to International Conferences and Workshops, and 3 invited talks.
