Book Phytophthora

Download or read book Phytophthora written by Kurt Lamour and published by CABI. This book was released on 2013 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins with an account of the early history of Phytophthora research and the tumultuous events setting the genus in motion. In keeping with its controversial inception, the chapter on taxonomy and phylogeny makes a compelling case that our current notion of Phytophthora as a genus is illusory. This chapter sets the stage for the importance of molecular tools on these enigmatic pathogens. The following chapters discuss species identification, population-level investigation, interspecific hybrids and the impact of diverse Phytophthora species on crops, forests, nurseries, greenhouses and natural areas worldwide.

Book Phytophthora Infestations in Forest Ecosystems

Download or read book Phytophthora Infestations in Forest Ecosystems written by Bruno Scanu and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-06-02 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oomycete genus Phytophthora represents one of the most notorious groups of tree pathogens in natural and semi-natural forest ecosystems. Since the discovery in the 1960s of the invasive P. cinnamomi, threatening some of the world’s richest plant communities in Australia, numerous Phytophthora diseases have been reported on forest trees worldwide, which were previously unknown to science. The most notable examples include the oak and beech declines triggered by different Phytophthora spp. in Europe and North America, the findings of sudden oak death and sudden larch death caused by P. ramorum in the Western USA and the U.K., respectively, and the association of P. austrocedri with mal del ciprés in Argentina and juniper decline in the U.K. All these epidemic events are driven by exotic invasive Phytophthora species, introduced through infested nursery plants from their native overseas environments. In recent years, many independent surveys have studied the diversity of Phytophthora species and the diseases they are causing across a diverse range of forests and other natural ecosystems. This Special Issue presents papers on Phytophthora surveys performed in different biogeographic regions and addresses the pathways, and ecological and economic impacts of these invasive forest pathogens.

Book Invasive Forest Pests

Download or read book Invasive Forest Pests written by and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence suggests that efforts to eradicate the Asian long-horned beetle appear likely to succeed, while the emerald ash borer and P. ramorum are likely to continue to infest and damage forest ecosystems indefinitely despite efforts to control them. The Asian long-horned beetle is a wood-boring insect from Asia that has caused separate infestations in parts of New York, New Jersey, and Illinois. Over 8,000 trees infested with the beetle have been removed, and over 600,000 trees have been chemically treated to protect against the beetle. As a result of these and other actions, federal and state agencies have been able to reduce the size of the infested areas. The emerald ash borer is also a wood-boring insect from Asia that has infested large areas in Michigan; Ohio; Indiana; and Ontario, Canada, killing an estimated 15 million trees. The pathogen P. ramorum is the causal agent of the disease known as Sudden Oak Death. It is of unknown origin and has infested large areas in central and northern coastal California and a small area in southern Oregon. This book examines these key environmental issues. This book is a fully-indexed excerpted version of a GAO report.

Book Sudden Oak Death and Phytophthora Ramorum

Download or read book Sudden Oak Death and Phytophthora Ramorum written by Kliejunas and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-02-14 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unusual die-off of tanoaks (Lithocarpus densiflorus (Hook. & Arn.) Rehd.) in the Mill Valley/Mount Tamalpais area of Marin County, California, was first documented in April 1995 (Svihra 1999b, 1999c, 2001), when homeowners reported scattered patches of dying tanoaks-with entire crowns dead and with bleeding basal cankers-to Pavel Svihra, University of California (UC) Cooperative Extension. The symptoms were also being reported by arborists and others on nearby tanoaks, including those at Muir Woods National Monument, and farther south in coastal Santa Cruz County and around Big Sur (Monterey County) in the same year. Heavy ambrosia beetle attacks and black fruiting bodies of a Hypoxylon fungus, later identified as Hypoxylon [Annulohypoxylon] thouarsianum (Swiecki 2001), were associated with the dying trees.
