Book An Outline of the History of Phytopathology Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Outline of the History of Phytopathology Classic Reprint written by Herbert Hice Whetzel and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the History of Phytopathology This booklet is to be regarded as in no sense a complete history of the science of plant pathology. The author has endeavored only to set forth in outline what appear to be the most outstanding features in the evolution of the science, and to indicate the proper relation thereto of the men who have chiefly shaped its progress. The literature upon which a complete history of plant pathology must be based is here largely brought together for the first time. It is hoped that this sketch may be elaborated later into a more complete and critical presentation of the subject. The author desires to express his appreciation of the assistance of numerous friends and colleagues in the preparation of this book; to a number of them, and especially to Dr. Erwin F. Smith, for photographs, important historic data, and a final criticism of the completed text; to Dr. L. R. Hesler and Dr. C. H. Kauffmann for critical reading of the manuscript. Book Fungous Diseases of Plants With Chapters on Physiology Culture Methods and Technique Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fungous Diseases of Plants With Chapters on Physiology Culture Methods and Technique Classic Reprint written by Benjamin Minge Duggar and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fungous Diseases of Plants With Chapters on Physiology, Culture Methods and Technique It is a noteworthy fact that there has been available to student and reader no general text or reference book of American origin upon fungous diseases of plants. Nevertheless, for thirty years or more there has been active investigation in this field, and during much of this time instruction in plant pathology has been an important part of biological teaching in all colleges where plant industry or country-life interests have been adequately represented. In the agricultural colleges the teaching of general mycology has been important, and that of plant pathology is now essential. The presentation should be fundamental, but it should also bear a close relation to the affairs of life. Plant pathological work has been rapidly developed in all countries characterized by a progressive agriculture, and for European conditions the student experiences no great lack of reference works. Through the agricultural experiment stations and through the extension work in various states a vast amount of information with respect to plant diseases has been published and otherwise disseminated, so that to ever) intelligent plant producer the opportunity has been extended of becoming more familiar with the crop relations of destructive parasitic fungi. The student and the progressive grower require something further, and it has therefore seemed none too early to put in book form a comprehensive discussion of the chief fungous diseases of cultivated and familiar plants. It is not intended that this book shall be an introduction to systematic mycology; yet the arrangement of the material in taxonomic sequence with respect to the fungi largely eliminates the necessity of any mycological preparation as a prerequisite. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phytopathology, Vol. 12: Official Organ of the American Phytopathological Society; January-December, 1922 The immature first year cones become infected at an early stage in their development, and within two or three months after they emerge many often exceed the size of the second year uninfected cones (pl. V, fig. A) home on the same tree. So far observations do not include infection of these two year old healthy cones. During the first of March many infected scales bearing pycnia may be observed accompanied by immature aecia within the cortical layers of the cone scale tissue im mediately beneath. With the maturity of the parasite, the infected cones have become abnormally enlarged and each individual swollen scale has a reddish color which is at first an orange chrome, becoming later a Sanford 's brown or chestnut.l With the rupturing of the aecial cavities and the sloughing o of the diseased cone scale tissue above, powdery masses of cadmium yellow spores are laid bare, (pl. V, fig. B, ) which entirely cover the cone. Excessive hypertrophy results, and the cones present a large swollen mass or gall, externally still showing the identity of each individual scale, but in longi-section, showing partial fusion of the scales. Book Plant Disease Fungi Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plant Disease Fungi Classic Reprint written by Frank Lincoln Stevens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Disease Fungi A large percentage of all plant diseases is caused by fungi. Fungi are devoid of chlorophyll and while transpiration, respira tion, and true assimilation are the same as with the green plants, photosynthesis or starch manufacture cannot be accomplished by them. Sunlight being thus unnecessary they can live in the dark as well as the light. Having no ability to elaborate their own foods from inorganic matter these organisms are limited to such nutriment as they can obtain from plants or animals which have elaborated it; that is, they must have organic foods for their sustenance. Book Bacteria in Relation to Plant Diseases Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bacteria in Relation to Plant Diseases Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Erwin F. Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bacteria in Relation to Plant Diseases, Vol. 2 This volume really begins the subject of bacterial diseases of plants, the first volume having had for its aim only the clearing of the ground by a discussion of methods of work and the general subject of bacteriology. Whatever in that volume relates to specific dis eases of plants was introduced merely by way of illustration, or to provoke interest in what should follow. The first part of this second volume deals with general questions relative to bacterial diseases of plants; the history of the subject, the distribution of bacteria on the surface of plants, the questions involved in the terms parasitism and symbiosis, the action of the bacteria on various tissues, the reactions of the plant, the interrelations of animal and plant parasites, and, finally, the problems relating to prevention. The wilt of cucurbits, the black rot of crucifers, and the yellow disease of hyacinths are then dealt with in separate chapters. In researches of this kind, covering as they do a relatively new and rapidly enlarging branch of science, the point of view changes with great frequency. T o day the interest will be centered on one phase of the subject, to-morrow, perhaps, on some quite different aspect. Fortunate for the experimenter if the new aspect do not require entrance into unfamiliar fields of discouraging complexity. For anyone to cover adequately by the experimental method a whole branch of science if it be a large one, is manifestly impossible. There will always be portions slurred over. The best that one can do is that which I have tried to do, via, to point out at frequent intervals gaps in our knowledge, to express things clearly and honestly, to distinguish between verified fact and speculation, and, finally, to leave each subject in somewhat better shape than I found it. The following pages are based in great part on data Obtained as the result of a multi tude of experiments made by the writer and his assistants, but all sources of published information have been considered.
