Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Mechanics The work presents the mixture of strict mechanical principles, with the physical inferences from experiment and Observation, that is de manded by the plan Of teaching Natural Philosophy, which is generally adopted in this country, and which is habitual in most Of the English Treatises on that general subject. 'it is therefore a combination Of the subject, styled by the French Mecanique, with so much of the department called by them Physique, as is necessary for its illustration, and for pre paring the way forlpractical applications. Nor have the latter been wholly omitted. _they have, in the scope of the treatise, frequently come into View, and have in all such cases been treated m We manner. Book Mechanics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mechanics Classic Reprint written by John Cox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics T is a common complaint that though the principles Of Mechanics are the simplest and the earliest to be discovered in the whole range of Science, and moreover are directly illustrated in almost every act of our lives, more difficulty is found in giving beginners a real grip of them than with any other branch of Physics. This I attribute largely to the way in which the text-books deal with the subject. The student usually Opens the book upon a chapter in which such leading concepts as matter, force, mass, particle, rigid body, smooth body are treated in definitions of a line or two each, before he sees any reason for their introduction at all. He is probably warned that philosophers are not agreed about the nature of matter; that motion is purely relative; that force is a misleading idea borrowed from our muscular sensations and better got rid of; and that no such things as mathematical particles, rigid bodies and smooth bodies exist in nature. He naturally concludes that Mechanics is an abstruse subject having nothing to do with realities or common sense. In the above remarks on definitions in general, we have avoided, as far as possible, illustrations taken from mechanics - the science under consideration. Their application to that science will become clear in the course of our investiga tion, to which we may now proceed. Book A Treatise on Elementary Dynamics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Treatise on Elementary Dynamics Classic Reprint written by Sidney L. Loney and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Elementary Dynamics In the following work I have attempted to write a fairly complete text-book on those parts of Dynamics which can be treated without the use of the Infinitesimal Calculus. The hook is intended for the use of beginners, but it is probable that most students would find it advisable, at any rate on the first reading of the subject, to confine their attention to the examples given in the text, reserving most of the questions at the ends of the chapters for a second reading. Most students would also find it advisable to omit Chap. III., the last four articles of Chap. IV., and Chap. IX., until the rest of the book has been fairly mastered. I have ventured to alter slightly the time-honoured enunciation of Newton's Second Law of Motion. I have used the property of the hodograph in the chapter on normal acceleration and in dealing with the motion of a particle in a conic section with an acceleration directed towards the focus. Book Elementary Practical Mechanics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Practical Mechanics Classic Reprint written by Joseph M. Jameson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Practical Mechanics It should, perhaps, be stated that the present text has grown out of a series of. Notes issued for several years in mimeograph form to the students in the School of Science and Technology, Pratt Institute. Nothing is included, therefore, which has not stood the test of several years' use with students in elementary technical courses. The time given to the subject at Pratt Institute is repre sented by one-half year with five lectures or recitations and six hours laboratory per week. The requirements in mathematics are limited to simultaneous and simple quad ratio equations and the simplest trigonometric functions. The order of presentation is that which has been found to give best results. General principles and definitions to form a ground work for laboratory exercises are introduced early, and the complete statement of theory, together with its applications, is then reached through laboratory and lecture work combined. The importance of carefully adapted laboratory exercises in teaching mechanics cannot be over emphasized. Numerous suggestions of models, etc, used in the laboratories at Pratt Institute are given in the figures illustrating this text. Book Analytical Mechanics A Comprehensive Treatise On The Dynamics Of Constrained Systems Reprint Edition

Download or read book Analytical Mechanics A Comprehensive Treatise On The Dynamics Of Constrained Systems Reprint Edition written by John G Papastavridis and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-03-06 with total page 1417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive, state-of-the-art, treatise on the energetic mechanics of Lagrange and Hamilton, that is, classical analytical dynamics, and its principal applications to constrained systems (contact, rolling, and servoconstraints). It is a book on advanced dynamics from a unified viewpoint, namely, the kinetic principle of virtual work, or principle of Lagrange. As such, it continues, renovates, and expands the grand tradition laid by such mechanics masters as Appell, Maggi, Whittaker, Heun, Hamel, Chetaev, Synge, Pars, Luré, Gantmacher, Neimark, and Fufaev. Many completely solved examples complement the theory, along with many problems (all of the latter with their answers and many of them with hints). Although written at an advanced level, the topics covered in this 1400-page volume (the most extensive ever written on analytical mechanics) are eminently readable and inclusive. It is of interest to engineers, physicists, and mathematicians; advanced undergraduate and graduate students and teachers; researchers and professionals; all will find this encyclopedic work an extraordinary asset; for classroom use or self-study. In this edition, corrections (of the original edition, 2002) have been incorporated.

Book Dynamics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dynamics Classic Reprint written by Horace Lamb and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dynamics This book is a sequel to a treatise on Statics published a little more than a year ago, and has a similar scope. To avoid repetitions, numerous references to the former volume are made. A writer who undertakes to explain the elements of Dynamics has the choice, either to follow one or other of the traditional methods which, however effectual from a practical point of view, are open to criticism on logical grounds, or else to adopt a treatment so abstract that it is likely to bewilder rather than to assist the student who looks to learn something about the behaviour of actual bodies which he can see and handle. There is no doubt as to which is the proper course in a work like the present; and I have not hesitated to follow the method adopted by Maxwell, in his Matter and Motion, which forms, I think, the best elementary introduction to the absolute system of Dynamics. Some account of the more abstract, if more logical, way of looking at dynamical questions is, however, given in its proper place, which is at the end, rather than at the beginning of the book. There is some latitude of judgment as to the order in which the different parts of the subject should be taken. To many students it is more important that they should gain, as soon as possible, some power of dealing with the simpler questions of 'rigid' Dynamics, than that they should master the more intricate problems of 'central forces, ' or of motion under various laws of resistance. This consideration has dictated the arrangement here adopted, but as the later chapters are largely independent of one another, they may be read in a different order without inconvenience. Book An Elementary Treatise on Theoretical Mechanics Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Elementary Treatise on Theoretical Mechanics Classic Reprint written by James Hopwood Jeans and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Theoretical Mechanics The primary aim of the present book is to supply for students beginning the study of Theoretical Mechanics a course of such a nature as shall emphasize the fundamental physical principles of the subject. Different students will of course approach the study of mechanics with different interests, different aims, and different amounts of mathematical equipment, so that it may not be possible to produce a single book which shall exactly fit the requirements of every class of student. But I believe that all students of mechanics, no matter what their aims and intentions may be, will be in the same position in one respect, namely that they will best begin the study of the subject by trying to acquire a firm grasp of the physical principles, leaving aside at first all mathematical developments and all practical applications, except in so far as these contribute to the elucidation of the fundamental physical principles. I am aware that this belief is not held by all teachers of mechanics, some of whom regard the laws of mechanics simply as working rules to be acquired as rapidly as possible for their utilitarian value, while others appear to regard them in the same light as the rules of a game, the game consisting in the solution of mathematical puzzles, most of which have no conceivable reference to the facts of nature. I find it hard to believe that there can be any considerable class of students for whom either of these points of view is the best. As regards the former, I feel that a student who cannot get, or does not wish to get, a clear understanding of mechanical principles would be well advised not to enter a profession in which his work will consist in the handling of mechanical problems; and as regards the latter, that a student who wishes merely to obtain material for puzzle solving would do better to turn his attention to chess or double acrostics.
