Book Effects of Radiation on Semiconductors

Download or read book Effects of Radiation on Semiconductors written by Viktor S. Vavilov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-14 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of electromagnetic radiation and high-energy par ticles on semiconductors can be divided into two main processes: (a) the excitation of electrons (the special case is internal ioniza tion, i. e. , the generation of excess charge carriers); and(b) dis turbance of the periodic structure of the crystal, i. e. , the forma tion of "structural radiation defects. " Naturally, investigations of the effects of radiation on semiconductors cannot be considered in isolation. Thus, for example, the problern of "radiation de fects" is part of the generalproblern of crystal lattice defects and the influence of such defects on the processes occurring in semi conductors. The same is true of photoelectric and similar phe nomena where the action of the radiation is only the start of a complex chain of nonequilibrium electronprocesses. Nevertheless, particularly from the point of view of the experimental physicist, the radiation effects discussed in the present book have inter esting features: several types of radiation may produce the same resul t (for example, ionization by photons and by charged particles) or one type of radiation may produce several effects (ionization and radiation -defect formation). The aim of the author was to consider the most typical prob lems. The subjects discussed differ widely from one another in the extent to which they have been investigated.

Book Porous Silicon Science and Technology

Download or read book Porous Silicon Science and Technology written by Jean-Claude Vial and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of bright visible light emission from porous silicon has opened the door to various nanometer sized silicon structures where the confinement of carriers gives rise to interesting physical properties. While the high efficiency of the light emission in the visible range is the common and the most prominent feature, their structures display similar properties with other highly divided materials (even non semiconductors), and then justify a multidisciplinary approach. This along with potential applications has attracted a large number of researchers followed by students to be trained. Until now international conferences have provided the exchange of information but have remained highly specialised so it was time to give thought to the organisation of topical and advanced lectures where the multidisciplinarity and the didactic approach are paramount. L'ecole des Houches was ideally devoted to that purpose. The meeting : " Luminescence of porous silicon and silicon nanostructures" was the first international school on this topic but some aspects in the organisation and the attendance have given an international workshop flavor to it. The school by itself has trained 82 «students», most of them were students starting their Ph. D thesis. 50% were French citizens and the other represented countries were Germany, England, USA, Czechoslovakia, The Netherlands, Italy, Japan, Poland, Spain, Canada, Brazil, India and Russia.

Book Heterojunctions and Semiconductor Superlattices

Download or read book Heterojunctions and Semiconductor Superlattices written by Guy Allan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Winter School held in Les Houches on March 12-21, 1985 was devoted to Semiconductor Heterojunctions and Superlattices, a topic which is recognized as being now one of the most interesting and active fields in semiconductor physics. In fact, following the pioneering work of Esaki and Tsu in 1970, the study of these two-dimensional semiconductor heterostructures has developed rapidly, both from the point of view of basic physics and of applications. For instance, modulation-doped heterojunctions are nowadays currently used to investigate the quantum Hall effect and to make very fast transistors. This book contains the lectures presented at this Winter School, showing in particular that many aspects of semiconductor heterojunctions and super lattices were treated, extending from the fabrication of these two-dimensional systems to their basic properties and applications in micro-and opto-electron ics. Among the subjects which were covered, one can quote as examples: molecular beam epitaxy and metallorganic chemical vapor deposition of semi conductor compounds; band structure of superlattices; properties of elec trons in heterojunctions, including the fractional quantum Hall effect; opti cal properties of two-dimensional heterostructures; quantum well lasers; and two-dimensional electron gas field effect transistors. It is clear that two-dimensional semiconductor systems are raising a great deal of interest in many industrial and university laboratories. From the number of applications which were received and from the reactions of the participants, it can certainly be asserted that this School corresponded to a need and came at the right time.

Book Cohesive Properties of Semiconductors under Laser Irradiation

Download or read book Cohesive Properties of Semiconductors under Laser Irradiation written by L.D. Laude and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of Materials Science in our environment has probably never been as massive and decisive as it is today. In every aspect of our lives, progress has never been so dependent on the techniques involved in producing ever more sophisticated materials in ever larger quantities, nor so demanding for technologists to imagine novel processes and circumvent difficulties, or take up new challenges. Every technique is based on a physical process which is put into practice and optimized. The better we know that process, the better the optimization, and more powerful the technique. Laser processing of materials is inscribed in that context. As soon as powerful coherent light sources were made available, it was realized that such intense sources of energy could be used to "heat, melt and crystallize" materials, i.e., to promote phase transitions in atomic systems. As early as 1964, attempts in that direction were made but received very little (if any) attention. Reasons for this lack of interest were several. For one thing, laser technology was not fully developed, so that the process offered poor reliability and no versatility. Also, improving the existing techniques was believed to be sufficient to meet the needs of the time, and there was no real motivation to explore new ways. Finally, and more important, the fundamentals of the physics behind the scenes were, and continue to be, way out of the runni~g stream.

Book Evaluation of Advanced Semiconductor Materials by Electron Microscopy

Download or read book Evaluation of Advanced Semiconductor Materials by Electron Microscopy written by David Cherns and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few years have ~een rapid improvements in semiconductor growth techniques which have produced an expanding range of high quality heterostructures for new semiconductor devises. As the dimensions of such structures approach the nanometer level, it becomes increasingly important to characterise materials properties such as composition uniformity, strain, interface sharpness and roughness and the nature of defects, as well as their influence on electrical and optical properties. Much of this information is being obtained by electron microscopy and this is also an area of rapid progress. There have been advances for thin film studies across a wide range of techniques, including, for example, convergent beam electron diffraction, X-ray and electron energy loss microanalysis and high spatial resolution cathodoluminescence as well as by conventional and high resolution methods. Important develop ments have also occurred in the study of surfaces and film growth phenomena by both microscopy and diffraction techniques. With these developments in mind, an application was made to the NATO Science Committee in late summer 1987 to fund an Advanced Research Work shop to review the electron microscopy of advanced semiconductors. This was subsequently accepted for the 1988 programme and became the "NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the Evaluation of Advanced Semiconductor Materials by Electron Microscopy". The Workshop took place in the pleasant and intimate surroundings of Wills Hall, Bristol, UK, during the week 11-17 September 1988 and was attended by fifty-five participants from fourteen countries.

Book Fundamentals of Solid State Electronics

Download or read book Fundamentals of Solid State Electronics written by Chih-Tang Sah and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 1991-10-30 with total page 1040 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is perhaps the most comprehensive undergraduate textbook on the fundamental aspects of solid state electronics. It presents basic and state-of-the-art topics on materials physics, device physics, and basic circuit building blocks not covered by existing textbooks on the subject. Each topic is introduced with a historical background and motivations of device invention and circuit evolution. Fundamental physics is rigorously discussed with minimum need of tedious algebra and advanced mathematics. Another special feature is a systematic classification of fundamental mechanisms not found even in advanced texts. It bridges the gap between solid state device physics covered here with what students have learnt in their first two years of study. Used very successfully in a one-semester introductory core course for electrical and other engineering, materials science and physics junior students, the second part of each chapter is also used in an advanced undergraduate course on solid state devices. The inclusion of previously unavailable analyses of the basic transistor digital circuit building blocks and cells makes this an excellent reference for engineers to look up fundamental concepts and data, design formulae, and latest devices such as the GeSi heterostructure bipolar transistors. This book is also available as a set with Fundamentals of Solid-State Electronics — Study Guide and Fundamentals of Solid-State Electronics — Solution Manual.
