Download or read book Dynamic Aspects of Conformation Changes in Biological Macromolecules written by C. Sadron and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the day after the 1959 Cambridge Congress, during which the International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics was founded, a biophysics section was formed within the Society of Physical Chemistry (Societe de Chimie Physique). Since then, three of the Society's annual meetings (the 11th, 17th, and 23rd) were devoted exclusively to the physico-chemical study of biological systems. The first of these was held in June 1961 at a hotel in Col de Voza, at the foot of an alpine glacier above Chamonix. The second, in May 1967, took place in the more learned setting of the venerable rooms of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. The third - the one dealt with in the present volume - was recently held at Orleans-La Source in the newly built lecture theatres of the young University, which is near the great Institutes of the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), on the Sologne plateau. These three stages are milestones of an evolution which characterises (at least schematically) the explosive evolution of biological physico-chemistry. The first colloquium, with the title 'Deoxyribonucleic Acid: Structure, Synthesis and Functions', actually marks the first contact of the physical chemist with one of the then most prestigious biological macromolecules, the structure of which had just been discovered, and in this way celebrated one of the first and most striking successes of molecular biology.

Download or read book The Mathematics of Errors written by Nicolas Bouleau and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-27 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mathematics of Errors presents an original, rigorous and systematic approach to the calculus of errors, targeted at both the engineer and the mathematician. Starting from Gauss's original point of view, the book begins as an introduction suitable for graduate students, leading to recent developments in stochastic analysis and Malliavin calculus, including contributions by the author. Later chapters, aimed at a more mature audience, require some familiarity with stochastic calculus and Dirichlet forms. Sensitivity analysis, in particular, plays an important role in the book. Detailed applications in a range of fields, such as engineering, robotics, statistics, financial mathematics, climate science, or quantum mechanics are discussed through concrete examples. Throughout the book, error analysis is presented in a progressive manner, motivated by examples and appealing to the reader’s intuition. By formalizing the intuitive concept of error and richly illustrating its scope for application, this book provides readers with a blueprint to apply advanced mathematics in practical settings. As such, it will be of immediate interest to engineers and scientists, whilst providing mathematicians with an original presentation. Nicolas Bouleau has directed the mathematics center of the Ecole des Ponts ParisTech for more than ten years. He is known for his theory of error propagation in complex models. After a degree in engineering and architecture, he decided to pursue a career in mathematics under the influence of Laurent Schwartz. He has also written on the production of knowledge, sustainable economics and mathematical models in finance. Nicolas Bouleau is a recipient of the Prix Montyon from the French Academy of Sciences.
Download or read book Paleobiology of the Polycystine Radiolaria written by David Lazarus and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-12-09 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycystine radiolaria are exclusively marine protists and are found in all ocean waters, from polar regions to the tropics, and at all water depths. There are approximately 600 distinct described living species and several thousand fossil species of polycystines. Radiolarians in general, and polycystines in particular, have recently been shown to be a major component of the living plankton and important to the oceanic carbon cycle. As fossils radiolarians are also fairly common, and often occur in sediments where other types of fossils are absent. This has made them very valuable for certain types of geologic research, particularly estimating the geologic age of the sediments containing them, and as guides to past oceanic water conditions. As our current understanding of the biology, and even taxonomy of the living fauna is still very incomplete, evolutionary studies based on living polycystines are still rare. However, the common occurrence of numerous specimens for many species, and in a wide variety of oceanic environments, provides an excellent opportunity to study the processes of biologic evolution in the fossil record. Paleobiology of the Polycystine Radiolaria is the first major book on radiolarians to appear in the western literature since 2001. Focusing on living and fossil siliceous shelled radiolarians, it is notable for its emphasis not upon morphologic or taxonomic detail but on concepts and applications. The book attempts to provide a balanced, critical review of what is known of the biology, ecology, and fossil record of the group, as well as their use in evolutionary, biostratigraphic and paleoceanographic research. Full chapters on the history of study, and molecular biology, are the first ever in book form. Written for an audience of advanced undergraduate to doctoral students, as well as for a broad range of professionals in the biological and Earth sciences, Paleobiology of the Polycystine Radiolaria summarizes current understanding of the marine planktonic protist group polycystine radiolaria, both in living and fossil form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multidisciplinary resource, this volume enables researchers to understand the physicochemical and biochemical factors that govern the functionality of food peptides and proteins. Following chapters on structure and chemistry, the book describes modes of characterization and the functional relationships of food proteins. It examines solubility and insolubility and explores proteins and peptides as emulsifying and foaming agents. Final chapters review future industrial perspectives and explore the role of nanotechnology in protein research. With contributions from a panel of international scientists, this volume captures the state of the art in protein and peptide research, providing a launching pad for further inquiry and discovery.
Download or read book Natural Toxins written by D. Eaker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Toxins presents the proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Animal, Plant and Microbial Toxins, held in Uppsala, Sweden on August 1979. This book presents the methods for detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases that natural toxins cause. Organized into 17 parts encompassing 84 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the embryonic development, structure, and function of the compound oral glands of venomous and non-venomous snakes in comparison with other exocrine glands. This text then examines the occupational hazards of snakebites in both agriculture and fishing in the Asian areas. Other chapters consider the toxicity and immunological relationships among venoms of several Agkistrodon species. This book discusses as well the characterization of cytotoxins and their mechanisms of action upon model lipid and cell membrane systems. The final chapter deals with neurotoxins as tools for the characterization of molecular components involved in nerve impulse propagation. This book is a valuable resource for biochemists, toxicologists, and pharmacologists.
