Book Breakdown in Human Adaptation to Stress

Download or read book Breakdown in Human Adaptation to Stress written by J. Cullen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widespread interest in "stressful" aspects of contemporary society which contribute to its burden of illness and diseases (e.g. gastro intestinal, cardiovascular) has led to a large number of state ments and reports which relate the manifestations to a maladaptation of the individual. Furthermore, recent research suggests that under some condi tions stress may have a more generalized effect of decreasing the body's ability to combat destructive forces and expose it to a variety of diseases. Breakdown in adaptation occurs when an individual cannot cope with demands inherent in his environment. These may be due to an excessive mental or physical load, including factors of a social or psychological nature and task performance requirements ranging from those which are monotonous, simple and repetitive to complex, fast, decision-taking ones. Experience shows however that not all people placed under the same condi tions suffer similarly, and it follows that to the social and psychological environment should be added a genetic factor influencing, through the brain, the responses of individuals. It is clear that, besides human suffering, this "breakdown in adaptation" causes massive losses of revenue to industry and national health authorities. Thus a reduction in "stress", before "breakdown" occurs, or an improvement in coping with it would be very valuable.

Book Handbook of Military Psychology

Download or read book Handbook of Military Psychology written by Reuven Gal and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1991 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Military Psychology Edited by Reuven Gal, The Israeli Institute for Military Studies, Zikhron, Ya’akov, Israel, and A. David Mangelsdorff, Health Services Command, Fort Sam Houston, USA With a Foreword by Edgar M. Johnson Section editors Friedrich W. Steege Paul R. Chatelier and Earl A. Alluisi Gerald P. Krueger T. O. Jacobs A. David Mangelsdorff Robert S. Nichols Reuven Gal The Handbook of Military Psychology describes the scope of military psychology and how the branches of psychology are applied in military settings, the similarities and differences within multinational and multi-service settings, the historical basis for the development and application of psychological principles in multi-service military settings, and the ongoing research and applications of military psychology. The volume editors have brought together a distinguished team of authors, under the leadership of section editors, who examine all areas in the field of military psychology—assessment; leadership; human factors; environmental factors; individual and group behavior; clinical and organizational applications; and special groups and special issues. The chapters include an up-to-date overview of the given subject, a historical review of the field, a critical analysis of the applications, and an extensive bibliography. The military must evaluate large numbers of people, screen out the unfit, select individuals with needed abilities, and place people in the jobs most appropriate both to their skills and to military needs. Military personnel, of all sorts, must be trained and prepared for warfare. Individuals have to be led and motivated and units must maintain high morale and cohesion in order to achieve their missions. Furthermore, military missions are frequently carried out under most stressful conditions and usually require strenuous adjustment between human capabilities and weapon-systems’ peculiarities. These characteristics of military organization all have their psychological aspects. This comprehensive handbook will be an essential tool for military psychologists, trainers and leaders dealing with these aspects. It will also be of interest to both practitioners and researchers working in the field of occupational and industrial psychology, and for those working in personnel management. From a pre-publication review ‘The Handbook of Military Psychology will be recognised as the standard work in this field.’ John Keegan

Book Current Aeromedical Issues in Rotary Wing Operations

Download or read book Current Aeromedical Issues in Rotary Wing Operations written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given its characteristics and the complexity of its use and its environment, the helicopter is exposed to damage and a whole series of measures can be previewed to alientate this risk. The presentations concentrated on five main topics: 1. Crew training; 2. The different conditions of use; 3. The psycho-physiological component; 4. Survival equipment and methods; and 5. Accidents and their prevention. A careful reading of the papers presented at the symposium will enable both specialists and decision-makers to make a summary assessment of the constraints of the missions on the one hand, and on the other, of the new methods of protection and training and the new technologies which will enable aircrew to carry out their missions in a safer environment. In addition, they will perhaps discover that helicopter operation can be optimised by a series of different devices and above all by judicious matching of "type of helicopter-type of aircrew training-type of additional on-board equipment".
