Book Physiology Preliminary Course Lectures

Download or read book Physiology Preliminary Course Lectures written by James T. Whittaker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology Preliminary Course Lectures Nobody in this hall ever heard, I venture to say, of Dr. Jacobus Primerosius. But Primrose made a good deal of noise in his day, and many were they who thought him a great physician. I pick out Primrose to-night from among all the notabilities of his time because he was a representative man. He made himself the exponent of his class. When the immortal Harvey proclaimed that startling truth about the circulation of the blood, which electrified the every-day world as well as the world of science and our branch of it to such degree that physicians met in counsel and gravely looked in each others faces and distressedly asked "what is now to become of us?" Primrose arose and said: "Pah! The Ancients made good cures before Harvey was born." Thereupon Primrose proceeded to put Harvey down. Book A Text Book of Physiology Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Physiology Tma high reputation acquired, on both sides of the Atlantic, by Dr. Foster's text-book of Physiology as a lucid exposition of the science in its most modern aspect, has seemed to call for an edition more thor oughly adapted to the wants of the American student. The plan of the author has presupposed an acquaint ance with the details of physiological anatomy, such as the student is accustomed to look for in his trea tises on physiology. The absence of these details has rendered many parts of the work vague, if not altogether incomprehensible, and has therefore proved a serious drawback to the usefulness of the book as an accompaniment to lectures on physiology as it is usu all y taught in our schools, and this deficiency the editor has endeavored to supply by brief notes and the intro duction of a large number of illustrations. Book Principles of General Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of General Physiology Classic Reprint written by William Maddock Bayliss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of General Physiology IN the preparation of courses of lectures dealing with various physiological processes I have found considerable difficulty, and spent much time, in the extraction from books and original papers, many of them not biological, of material of fundamental importance in the proper treatment of the subject. The mechanism of reactions in heterogeneous systems may be mentioned. It seemed to me, therefore, that the results of this labour might be of use to others, whose work does not allow them sufficient time to read articles which do not appear to bear upon their particular domain of science. In arranging these facts, however, it became manifest that a somewhat wider treatment would be of more value, so that the book might be of service to all desiring a general, elementary, treatment of what may be called abstract physiology, as distinct from the applied physiology required by the agricultural, medical, or veterinary student for the purpose of his profession. In extenuation of my conduct in producing a work on physiology for the use, as I venture to hope, of all those who have any interest in science, I should like to quote a few words by Huxley to be found in his address, On the Educational Value of the Natural History Sciences (huxley, 1902-1903, p. 59 - see Bibliography). He gives an answer to the question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Physiology: With Practical Exercises AT the present day, to teach Physiology by means of formal lectures and systematic text-books alone is no more satis factory than it would be to till the farms of America with the wooden plough of Bengal. Some benefit can certainly be gained from the mere reading of a good text-book or listening to a good lecturer; but the result will be meagre in comparison with the capabilities of the subject, and the knowledge thus acquired will be more likely to sink to the level of cram than to rise to the level of education. In this book an attempt has been made to interweave formal exposition with practical work. In the way my experience at the Harvard Medical School and the Western Reserve University has shown to be best suited to the needs and the opportunities of the American student. An arrangement of the Practical Exercises with reference to the systematic course has this great advantage - that by a little care it is possible to secure that the student shall be actually working at a given subject at the time it is being lectured on. Cross-reference from lecture-room to laboratory, and from laboratory to lecture-room, from the detailed discussion of the relations of a phenomenon to the living fact itself, is thus rendered easy, natural, and fruitful. Download or read book An Introduction to Human Physiology Classic Reprint written by Augustus D. Waller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Human Physiology Nor is this all. An acquaintance with at least the existence of frontier interests, and even a participation de tactu with science at its growing surface, cannot be excluded from the laboratories of a medical school without serious and immediate loss to the interests of medicine and of surgery. With regard to the plan of construction of this book. The chapter headings are intended to serve a double purpose: as a summary or syllabus - being, in fact, the condensed lecture-syllabus that I have used during the last nine years; and as a means of self-examination. A student having read certain paragraphs or chapters, should return to the chapter heading, and find by its re capitulation whether it contains expressions that are meaningless to him, or whether it recalls a series of ideas that he has understood and assimilated. If an unfamiliar technical word is met with, its meaning should be ascertained at some other part of the book, through the index. Book The Student s Human Physiology

Download or read book The Student s Human Physiology written by Ernest Evans and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Human Physiology: A First Year's Course in the Practice, and Theory of the Subject This book has been prepared with the object of showing how a complete course of instruction in the practice and theory of the more elementary parts of Human Physiology can be given, and it contains all the essentials of a first year's course in the subject. The study is not costly, and the book shows how it can be done with the minimum expense for apparatus and materials. In addition, many of the objections which have been advanced against its introduction into schools have been removed by the arrangement of the experiments. From an educational point of view it can be made just as profitable as the study of any other branch of science, and the knowledge gained by the pupils will be of lasting benefit throughout life. The arrangement of the practical part of the work is the result of the experience gained during many years in teaching large and successful classes in Human Physiology, and the experiments have been chosen so as to be within the reach of a first year's student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology: For Beginners The book contains innovations in method which it is unnecessary to discuss with professional teach ers. The changes had their origin in those funda mental principles of pedagogy which are universally accepted; as to the skill with which they have been carried out, it remains for the teacher and for use in the school to decide. The language used is as simple as that of fourth readers. While in tended for recitation in the two grades next higher, it is believed that the book is likewise well adapted for use in the fourth school year as supplementary reading, accompanied by the oral instruction of the teacher. Thus it may supply work in three years of the graded school course. Work in elementary natural history is included in order that the book may in part supply a con meeting link between the nature study of the pri mary grades and the biology of the high school, the author's Elementary Physics and his Ele ments of Physiology (with the usual books in geography) completing the science work for the grades below the high school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology: A Manual for Students and Practitioners IT was the aim of the authors in writing this work for its original edition to gather within brief compass those facts of Physiology with which medical students should be familiar in order that they might successfully pursue the more advanced courses of the medical curriculum. It was not the intention to produce a work of originality nor one which should take the place of more elaborate text-books in the instruction of students, but one offering a means of quickly reviewing the essential features of the subject. The demand which exhausted successive printings of the first edition indicates that the work answered its purpose as a brief exposition of Physiology suited to the needs of students and practitioners, and it is hoped that this new and thoroughly revised issue may meet with equal favor. Download or read book Practical Physiology Classic Reprint written by Edward Provan Cathcart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Physiology Physiology is the basis of medicine, and the further advance of these sciences depends mainly upon the experimental method. The medical student, the future physician, should undergo a training in practical physiology, for thereby he learns the most important of all lessons he learns to observe, to draw conclusions from his observations, and to unravel the causes of his failures. The importance of practical physiology is undoubted, but as to the nature and scope of the experimental work, which is most suitable for the medical student, there is considerable difference of opinion among teachers of physiology. In this country, perhaps, too much stress has been laid upon the physiology of muscle and nerve for the hope that a study of the properties of these tissues will unfold the enigma of life is likely ever to remain without consummation. An advance in the knowledge of the living organism as a whole, one organ reacting upon another, has been gained by experiments upon the living animal, treated as a unit and not as a collection of separate organs and tissues. Such practical physiology needs extension in the courses of instruction given to students. It should, as far as possible, have a direct relation to medicine.
