Book Origins of Physiological Regulations

Download or read book Origins of Physiological Regulations written by E. F. Adolph and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Origins of Physiological Regulations focuses on arrangements that maintain bodily properties and activities, including heart rate regulation, water intake and secretion, and cardiac determination. The monograph first offers information on physiological regulation, nonregulation and regulation, and ontogeny of physiological regulation. The text then ponders on heart rate regulation, programmed development, and metabolic equilibration. Discussions focus on early cardiac determination, cardiac pacemaker, set points, self-contained programs, water excretion and intake, and tolerance curves. The publication examines concentrations and their differentials and constancy and variability, including cellular composition and resting and range of heart rates. The text then elaborates on behavior as regulation, tools of regulation, feedbacks in regulations, tolerances and protections, and adaptations to environment. The monograph is a dependable source of information for research workers and advanced students interested in regulatory physiology or developmental biology.

Book Systemic Homeostasis and Poikilostasis in Sleep

Download or read book Systemic Homeostasis and Poikilostasis in Sleep written by Pier Luigi Parmeggiani and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at presenting biologists and clinicians with a compact description of the physiological manifestations of sleep that are significant from the viewpoint of the principle of homeostasis. In the jargon of the physiological literature, the word ?homeostasis?, introduced by W.B. Cannon (1926), refers to the existence of a constant state of extracellular body fluids with regard to their physical and chemical properties. Since normal cell function depends on the constancy of such fluids, in multicellular animals there are many regulatory mechanisms under the control of the central nervous system that act to maintain the constancy of the internal environment. The experimental study of homeostasis in wakefulness already revealed the nature and complexity of the underlying physiological mechanisms. Many of these regulatory mechanisms trigger compensatory changes according to the principle of negative feedback. In contrast, the control of homeostasis across sleep states is still an issue under debate concerning its physiological persistence and significance. The author's aim is to find the specific mechanistic proofs of the actual consistency or inconsistency of the principle in different states of sleep. In this respect, there are several interacting physiological functions that ought to be examined across the sleep states. The selection of the most significant experimental data is carried out with a view to present a simple but not simplistic approach to the issue. The book brings forth the evidence that the systemic homeostatic regulation of many physiological variables underlying cellular life is not active in a particular state of the ultradian sleep cycle in mammals. It also shows the theoretical and functional importance of the principle of homeostasis, as a criterion of the systemic characterisation of the integrative control of physiological functions by the central nervous system during sleep in mammals.

Book Physiology and Pathophysiology of Temperature Regulation

Download or read book Physiology and Pathophysiology of Temperature Regulation written by Clark M. Blatteis and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a user-friendly monograph designed for medical students as well as graduate students and postdoctoral trainees in medicine and other health-related sciences who need a comprehensive overview of thermoregulation. It presents the bases of the modern concepts in thermal physiology and pathophysiology, bringing together the disciplines encompassed by this highly integrative field ? physiology, anatomy, biophysics, molecular and cellular biology, pharmacology, neuroscience, pathology, medicine, and others ? into a clear and concise form that can be read comfortably in a relatively short time. This text was conceived by the Commission on Thermal Physiology of the International Union of Physiological Sciences in response to its concern over the inadequate and outdated coverage of this topic in traditional textbooks. The membership of this Commission comprises international experts in each of the subfields of thermal physiology, with extensive research and teaching experience in their respective specialties. They are the authors of the chapters of this indispendable textbook.
