Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiography of Western United States In calling this book Physiography we are merely accepting the American usage of a not very fortunate term. The central theme of the work is the land forms of western United States and how they came about. There is no doubt about this center Of interest, but the circumference Of an appropriate mass Of fact may be hard to fix. A companion volume on the Physiography of Eastern United States is now in preparation. It may be assumed that geologists and geographers have equal interest in land forms, but the quality of their interests is very different. To the geologist land forms are a kind of final product, the end Of a story. TO the geographer they Offer a beginning, a point Of departure. TO the former, land forms depend on all the physical processes of geology. TO the latter, they depend on nothing; almost everything else depends on them in some measure. According to the above-made statement of our central theme this book is mainly geological. It treats land forms as effects, not as causes. But before doing so, or while doing so, it is necessary to devote a'large share Of space to the description of forms as they are. Such descriptions have equal interest to the geographer. Moreover, to a writer who shares the geographic interest there is a constant temptation to clothe these land forms with life by pointing out their influence on climate and life and habitation and civilization. NO attempt has been made to resist this impulse but, on the other hand, there is no attempt to treat such matters systematically or symmetrically for all parts Of the territory. They belong to the illustrations, not to the systematic framework. If industries are named in one section Of the country and not in another it is merely because they serve to illuminate a point in one case and not in the other. Of a country so large as the United States no adequate physiographic description can be given within the limits of a monograph of this size. The purpose here is to define the great slopes, and then a greater number of physiographic regions, which are again divided into districts, and to indicate some of their more important characteristics. Three of the regions have been selected for a somewhat more elaborate description, ?one of plains, one of plateaus, and one of mountains, ? thus illustrating briefly all three types. These regions are the Atlantic Plains, the Colorado Plateaus, and the Pacific Mountains, taking the eastern, a midland, and the -western region. It will be noticed that an old custom of describing great physiographic regions in units of basins has not been followed. Against that plan there are insuperable objections. Where there are large rivers, there are large basins, and such are again subdivided into ever smaller and smaller basins; and where there are oceans and gulfs, there are many small disconnected basins; so that the basin unit divides the country into very unequal parts, and fails to exhibit the association of great features that are intimately connected in physiographic history. Gradually, as the new science of physiography has grown, physiographic regions have come to be recognized; and an attempt is here made, by map and verbal description, to define the principal regions of the United States, exclusive of Alaska. Book excerpt: Traditional interpretations of the American West have concentrated on the importance of its aridity to the region's cultural evolution and development. But the West is marked by a second fact of physical geography that distinguished it (from the experiences of settlers) from the east. As pioneers struggled with the climate west of the hundredth meridian, they were also confronted by mountains strewn across the region and offering their own set of limitations and opportunities. This volume focuses on these green islands of the Mountainous West that have witnessed patterns of settlement and development distinct from their lowland neighbors. In thirteen essays, the contributors address the mountains by means of five themes: the mountains as barriers to movement, islands of moisture, a zone of concentrated resources, an area of government control, and a restorative sanctuary. The focus ranges from California's Sierra Nevada to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Utah, and Montana. William K. Wyckoff is an associate professor, Department of Earth Sciences, Montana State University. He is the author of The Developer's Frontier: The Making of the Western New York Landscape and of articles in many journals, including The California Geographer, Social Science Journal, Geographical Review, and Journal of Historical Geography. Lary M. Dilsaver is a professor in the Department of Geology and Geography, University of South Alabama. The author, with William Tweed, of Challenge of the Big Trees: A Resource History of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, he has also written articles in journals such as Geographical Review, Annals of Tourism Research, and Yearbook of the Association of Pacific CoastGeographers.
