Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis· seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac· tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 20 (thesis year 1975) a total of 10,374 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 239 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 20 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.

Book excerpt: "A thorough, illuminating exploration of the most consequential controversy raging in modern science." --New York Times Book Review An Editor's Choice, New York Times Book Review Longlisted for PEN/E.O. Wilson Prize for Literary Science Writing Longlisted for Goodreads Choice Award Every physicist agrees quantum mechanics is among humanity's finest scientific achievements. But ask what it means, and the result will be a brawl. For a century, most physicists have followed Niels Bohr's solipsistic and poorly reasoned Copenhagen interpretation. Indeed, questioning it has long meant professional ruin, yet some daring physicists, such as John Bell, David Bohm, and Hugh Everett, persisted in seeking the true meaning of quantum mechanics. What Is Real? is the gripping story of this battle of ideas and the courageous scientists who dared to stand up for truth. "An excellent, accessible account." --Wall Street Journal "Splendid. . . . Deeply detailed research, accompanied by charming anecdotes about the scientists." --Washington Post

Book Statistical Mechanics for Athermal Fluctuation

Download or read book Statistical Mechanics for Athermal Fluctuation written by Kiyoshi Kanazawa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author investigates athermal fluctuation from the viewpoints of statistical mechanics in this thesis. Stochastic methods are theoretically very powerful in describing fluctuation of thermodynamic quantities in small systems on the level of a single trajectory and have been recently developed on the basis of stochastic thermodynamics. This thesis proposes, for the first time, a systematic framework to describe athermal fluctuation, developing stochastic thermodynamics for non-Gaussian processes, while thermal fluctuations are mainly addressed from the viewpoint of Gaussian stochastic processes in most of the conventional studies. First, the book provides an elementary introduction to the stochastic processes and stochastic thermodynamics. The author derives a Langevin-like equation with non-Gaussian noise as a minimal stochastic model for athermal systems, and its analytical solution by developing systematic expansions is shown as the main result. Furthermore, the a uthor shows a thermodynamic framework for such non-Gaussian fluctuations, and studies some thermodynamics phenomena, i.e. heat conduction and energy pumping, which shows distinct characteristics from conventional thermodynamics. The theory introduced in the book would be a systematic foundation to describe dynamics of athermal fluctuation quantitatively and to analyze their thermodynamic properties on the basis of stochastic methods.

Book How to Prepare a Scientific Doctoral Dissertation Based on Research Articles

Download or read book How to Prepare a Scientific Doctoral Dissertation Based on Research Articles written by Björn Gustavii and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-18 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The article-based thesis is becoming increasingly common, especially in the 'hard' sciences such as biology, medicine and technology, and is beginning to replace the traditional monograph. Format guidelines vary among universities. This is the first book to summarise the main features, showing the PhD student how to prepare a thesis in such a format. The suggestions are highly practical; both its good and bad examples from published theses support the author's wise advice on all aspects of such theses. Poor figures are not only scrutinised in detail but also redrawn for comparison. Guidance also covers the issues of reprint permissions and copyright. This informative and accessible book, from the author of How to Write and Illustrate a Scientific Paper, has been developed through the author's extensive teaching experience in scientific writing and also his experience as a journal editor. It is therefore an indispensable guide to article-based thesis success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Feynman's never previously published doctoral thesis formed the heart of much of his brilliant and profound work in theoretical physics. Entitled ?The Principle of Least Action in Quantum Mechanics," its original motive was to quantize the classical action-at-a-distance electrodynamics. Because that theory adopted an overall space?time viewpoint, the classical Hamiltonian approach used in the conventional formulations of quantum theory could not be used, so Feynman turned to the Lagrangian function and the principle of least action as his points of departure. The result was the path integral approach, which satisfied ? and transcended ? its original motivation, and has enjoyed great success in renormalized quantum field theory, including the derivation of the ubiquitous Feynman diagrams for elementary particles. Path integrals have many other applications, including atomic, molecular, and nuclear scattering, statistical mechanics, quantum liquids and solids, Brownian motion, and noise theory. It also sheds new light on fundamental issues like the interpretation of quantum theory because of its new overall space?time viewpoint. The present volume includes Feynman's Princeton thesis, the related review article ?Space?Time Approach to Non-Relativistic Quantum Mechanics? [Reviews of Modern Physics 20 (1948), 367?387], Paul Dirac's seminal paper ?The Lagrangian in Quantum Mechanics'' [Physikalische Zeitschrift der Sowjetunion, Band 3, Heft 1 (1933)], and an introduction by Laurie M Brown.

Book Boundary Physics and Bulk Boundary Correspondence in Topological Phases of Matter

Download or read book Boundary Physics and Bulk Boundary Correspondence in Topological Phases of Matter written by Abhijeet Alase and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis extends our understanding of systems of independent electrons by developing a generalization of Bloch’s Theorem which is applicable whenever translational symmetry is broken solely due to arbitrary boundary conditions. The thesis begins with a historical overview of topological condensed matter physics, placing the work in context, before introducing the generalized form of Bloch's Theorem. A cornerstone of electronic band structure and transport theory in crystalline matter, Bloch's Theorem is generalized via a reformulation of the diagonalization problem in terms of corner-modified block-Toeplitz matrices and, physically, by allowing the crystal momentum to take complex values. This formulation provides exact expressions for all the energy eigenvalues and eigenstates of the single-particle Hamiltonian. By precisely capturing the interplay between bulk and boundary properties, this affords an exact analysis of several prototypical models relevant to symmetry-protected topological phases of matter, including a characterization of zero-energy localized boundary excitations in both topological insulators and superconductors. Notably, in combination with suitable matrix factorization techniques, the generalized Bloch Hamiltonian is also shown to provide a natural starting point for a unified derivation of bulk-boundary correspondence for all symmetry classes in one dimension.

Book Microparticle Dynamics in Electrostatic and Flow Fields

Download or read book Microparticle Dynamics in Electrostatic and Flow Fields written by Sheng Chen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-30 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis proposes new approaches for modelling contacting interactions and electrostatic interactions between microparticles in the framework of the discrete element method and presents a systematic investigation on the agglomeration, migration and deposition of microparticles in presence of electrostatic and flow fields. It reports an exponential-form scaling for the size distribution of early-stage agglomerates in homogeneous isotropic turbulence and formulate the agglomeration and deagglomeration rates. The evolution of spherical clouds of charged particles that migrate under the action of an external electrostatic field is then investigated. Scaling laws of cloud radius and particle number density are obtained by solving a continuum convection equation. Finally, it investigates the deposition of charged particles on a flat plane and fibers. A dimensionless adhesion parameter is constructed to predict the structure of deposits. The temporal evolution of the deposit structure, particle capture efficiency, and the pressure drop are displayed with varying values of Coulomb repulsion and adhesion magnitudes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are four phenomena in the Universe Newtonian science could never explain. I dissected the working of the phenomena. I found that the four forms a unit and the combination produce gravity. No academic in powerful positions wishes to have tier Academic work trashed. If I can reach students by the mass media and make them see the truth about mass and Newtonian corruption before the academic machine brainwashes the students, I will succeed. Academics then must start to prove Newtonian incorrectness because people will see the fraud in physics. Mass puts distinction. Galileo took out distinction when he proved all objects fall equally. At present when any student insists on proof about mass that produces gravity they flunked their test and is shown away from Universities. By reaching students via this book and getting them to insist on proof about mass that is producing gravity, I can defeat those academics trying to dig my grave. I am introducing a totally new concept in terms of gravity, the proof I bring is true about gravity being formed as a result of these following phenomena. In the past science hardly recognised the existence of such phenomena although they are known to science for centuries. 1) The Lagrangian system 2) The Roche limit 3) The Titius Bode law 4) The Coanda affect. I found the manner in which to interpret Kepler's formula as a3 = kT2 and I found that when dealing with Kepler's formula, we should not see a3 as space but we should see singularity being positioned in space in relation to singularity forming relevancies. Doing that placed me in the position to discover what gravity is and how gravity operates to form the Universe. By placing P in relation to gravity I manage to find an explanation for the four cosmic phenomena. Everything that has anything to do with gravity forms a circle albeit that it is called the curvature of space-time or gravity bending light or forming a round galactica, the connecting factor is gravity which implements P. Gravity or another name used to call gravity would be time is running on the measure of P and every aspect of cosmology integrates P as the basic concept on which cosmology is founded. Because my views do not echo the commendable praise attributed to the greatness by which Newton is commemorated, my work is purposely and very much wilfully poorly received in the world of physics and astrophysics and by that I find very little willingness in any understanding shown in the ranks of Newtonian science. This work contains ideas about the introducing of a totally new concept on explaining for the first time ever the working principles of gravity, a matter that eluded Newton no less. I decided to offer four books that introduce the explaining of these concepts in e-book format. This method of publishing rests totally on a financial basis. I tried to introduce the four phenomena as a concept by using a web page but found such introduction is far too comprehensive in having just too many and numerously wide ranging facts that form the complete picture as a whole to be comprehensibly appreciable, and therefore on account of that realisation that I was unable to include a full introduction in a space as small as that which a web page will allow, it gave me the idea of introducing this new concept via electronic publishing. As my other books I sell by printing are all hundreds to thousands of Mega Bites of information, I had to revise the layout where each is to have fewer than twenty mega bites. This motivated me to only introduce the concepts in producing small books that then could be sold via the electronic publishing media as to allow persons to first acquaint themselves about the viability of the concepts and the feasibility of this new approach I introduce. If any person shows interest in finding out more about any of the books, please click on the book of interest and discover something in science no one yet has ever heard about.
