Book Physics of Plasma Wall Interactions in Controlled Fusion

Download or read book Physics of Plasma Wall Interactions in Controlled Fusion written by D. E. Post and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 1178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controlled thermonuclear fusion is one of the possible candidates for long term energy sources which will be indispensable for our highly technological society. However, the physics and technology of controlled fusion are extremely complex and still require a great deal of research and development before fusion can be a practical energy source. For producing energy via controlled fusion a deuterium-tritium gas has to be heated to temperatures of a few 100 Million °c corres ponding to about 10 keV. For net energy gain, this hot plasma has to be confined at a certain density for a certain time One pro mising scheme to confine such a plasma is the use of i~tense mag netic fields. However, the plasma diffuses out of the confining magnetic surfaces and impinges on the surrounding vessel walls which isolate the plasma from the surrounding air. Because of this plasma wall interaction, particles from the plasma are lost to the walls by implantation and are partially reemitted into the plasma. In addition, wall atoms are released and can enter the plasma. These wall atoms or impurities can deteriorate the plasma performance due to enhanced energy losses through radiation and an increase of the required magnetic pressure or a dilution of the fuel in the plasma. Finally, the impact of the plasma and energy on the wall can modify and deteriorate the thermal and mechanical pro perties of the vessel walls.

Book Plasma Material Interactions in a Controlled Fusion Reactor

Download or read book Plasma Material Interactions in a Controlled Fusion Reactor written by Tetsuo Tanabe and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-08 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a primer on the interplay between plasma and materials in a fusion reactor, so-called plasma–materials interactions (PMIs), highlighting materials and their influence on plasma through PMI. It aims to demonstrate that a plasma-facing surface (PFS) responds actively to fusion plasma and that the clarifying nature of PFS is indispensable to understanding the influence of PFS on plasma. It describes the modern insight into PMI, namely, relevant feedback to plasma performance from plasma-facing material (PFM) on changes in a material surface by plasma power load by radiation and particles, contrary to a conventional view that unilateral influence from plasma on PFM is dominant in PMI. There are many books and reviews on PMI in the context of plasma physics, that is, how plasma or plasma confinement works in PMI. By contrast, this book features a materials aspect in PMI focusing on changes caused by heat and particle load from plasma: how PFMs are changed by plasma exposure and then, accordingly, how the changed PFM interacts with plasma.

Book Plasma Physics for Controlled Fusion

Download or read book Plasma Physics for Controlled Fusion written by Kenro Miyamoto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition presents the essential theoretical and analytical methods needed to understand the recent fusion research of tokamak and alternate approaches. The author describes magnetohydrodynamic and kinetic theories of cold and hot plasmas in detail. The book covers new important topics for fusion studies such as plasma transport by drift turbulence, which depend on the magnetic configuration and zonal flows. These are universal phenomena of microturbulence. They can modify the onset criterion for turbulent transport, instabilities driven by energetic particles as well as alpha particle generation and typical plasma models for computer simulation. The fusion research of tokamaks with various new versions of H modes are explained. The design concept of ITER, the international tokamak experimental reactor, is described for inductively driven operations as well as steady-state operations using non-inductive drives. Alternative approaches of reversed-field pinch and its relaxation process, stellator including quasi-symmetric system, open-end system of tandem mirror and inertial confinement are also explained. Newly added and updated topics in this second edition include zonal flows, various versions of H modes, and steady-state operations of tokamak, the design concept of ITER, the relaxation process of RFP, quasi-symmetric stellator, and tandem mirror. The book addresses graduate students and researchers in the field of controlled fusion.

Book Plasma Physics for Nuclear Fusion

Download or read book Plasma Physics for Nuclear Fusion written by Kenrō Miyamoto and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1980 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the properties of gaseous plasmas needed to attain controlled fusion reactions. Designed as a text for graduated and senior undergraduate students beginning the study of plasma physics as it relates to controlled nuclear fusion, the book should play a significant role in preparing a new generation of scientists and engineers to enter the important field of nuclear fusion research. It will also serve as a basic and exhaustive reference for professionals already involved in the field. The book consists of sixteen chapters, grouped into four major subject areas. The first five chapters develop the fundamentals of plasma physics and present the conditions of nuclear fusion reactions. The next four provide a magnetohydrodynamic description of plasmas, followed by four chapters that provide an explanation of wave phenomena and instabilities by means of a kinetic model. The three final chapters take up the problems of heating, diagnostics, and confinement. Some of the specific topics introduced are the Lawson condition, Boltzmann and Vlasov equations; plasma equilibrium; magnetohydrodynamic instabilities; waves in cold and hot plasmas; microinstabilities; fast neutral beam injection and wave heating; diagnostics employing microwaves, lasers, and energy analyzers. Plasma confinement in tokamaks and stellerators, multipole fields, mirrors, and cusps, as well as inertial confinement, are reviewed. References follow each chapter. There are four appendixes and an index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It became clear in the early days of fusion research that the effects of the containment vessel (erosion of "impurities") degrade the overall fusion plasma performance. Progress in controlled nuclear fusion research over the last decade has led to magnetically confined plasmas that, in turn, are sufficiently powerful to damage the vessel structures over its lifetime. This book reviews current understanding and concepts to deal with this remaining critical design issue for fusion reactors. It reviews both progress and open questions, largely in terms of available and sought-after plasma-surface interaction data and atomic/molecular data related to these "plasma edge" issues.
