Book Properties and Applications of Amorphous Materials

Download or read book Properties and Applications of Amorphous Materials written by M.F. Thorpe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this NATO ASI has been to present an up-to-date overview of current areas of interest in amorphous materials, with particular emphasis on electronic properties and device applications. In order to limit the material to a manageable amount, the meeting was concerned almost exclusively with semiconducting materials. This volume should be regarded as a follow-on to the NATO ASI held in Sozopol, Bulgaria in 1996 and published as "Amorphous Insulators and Semiconductors" edited by M.F. Thorpe and M.1. Mitkova (Kluwer Academic Publishers, NATO ASI series, 3 High Technology - Vol. 23). The lectures and seminars fill the gap between graduate courses and research seminars. The lecturers and seminar speakers were chosen as experts in their respective areas, and the lectures and seminars that were given are presented in this volume. During the first week of the meeting, an emphasis was placed on introductory lectures while the second week focused more on research seminars. There were two very good poster sessions that generated a lot of discussion, but these are not reproduced in this volume as the editors wanted to have only larger contributions to make the proceedings more coherent.

Book Physical Properties of Amorphous Materials

Download or read book Physical Properties of Amorphous Materials written by David Adler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Institute for Amorphous Studies was founded in 1982 as the international center for the investigation of amorphous mate rials. It has since played an important role in promoting the und er standing of disordered matter in general. An Institute lecture series on "Fundamentals of Amorphous Materials and Devices" was held during 1982-83 with distinguished speakers from universities and industry. These events were free and open to the public ,and were attended by many representatives of the scientific community. The lectures themselves were highly successful inasmuch as they provided not only formal instruction but also an opportunity for vigorous and stimulating debate. That last element could not be captured within the pages of a book I but the lectures concentrated on the latest advances in the field I which is why their essential contents are he re reproduced in collective form. Together they constitute an interdisciplinary status report of the field. The speakers brought many different viewpoints and a variety of back ground experiences io bear on the problems involved I but though language and conventions vary I the essential unity of the concerns is very clear I as indeed are the ultimate benefits of the many-sided approach.

Book Electronic Properties of Crystalline Solids

Download or read book Electronic Properties of Crystalline Solids written by Richard Bube and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic Properties of Crystalline Solids: An Introduction to Fundamentals discusses courses in the electronic properties of solids taught in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University. The book starts with a brief review of classical wave mechanics, discussing concept of waves and their role in the interactions of electrons, phonons, and photons. The book covers the free electron model for metals, and the origin, derivation, and properties of allowed and forbidden energy bands for electrons in crystalline materials. It also examines transport phenomena and optical effects in crystalline materials, including electrical conductivity, scattering phenomena, thermal conductivity, Hall and thermoelectric effects, magnetoresistance, optical absorption, photoconductivity, and other photoelectronic effects in both ideal and real materials. This book is intended for upper-level undergraduates in a science major, or for first- or second-year graduate students with an interest in the scientific basis for our understanding of properties of materials.

Book Introduction to Photonic and Phononic Crystals and Metamaterials

Download or read book Introduction to Photonic and Phononic Crystals and Metamaterials written by Arthur R. Mcgurn and published by Synthesis Lectures on Material. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Photonic and Phononic Crystals and Metamaterials, by Arthur R. McGurn, presents a study of the fundamental properties of optical and acoustic materials which have been of recent interest in nanoscience and device technology. The level of the presentations is appropriate for advanced undergraduates, beginning graduate students, and researchers not directly involved in the field. References are given to guide the reader to more advanced study in these fields. Discussions of the physics of photonic and phononic crystals focus on the transmission properties of optical and acoustic radiation arising from their diffractive interaction in these engineered materials. The frequency transmission and non-transmission bands of radiation are explained in terms of the symmetry properties of the photonic and phononic artificial crystal structures. Basic applications of these properties to a variety of their technological applications are examined. The physics of metamaterials is discussed along with their relationships to the ideas of resonance. Properties of negative index of refraction, perfect lens, and unusual optical effects the new optics of metamaterial media makes available are examined. Related effects in acoustics are also covered. Basic principles of surface acoustic and electromagnetic waves are explained. These form an introduction to the fundamental ideas of the recently developing fields of plasmonics and surface acoustics.
