Book Physicians of Western Medicine

Download or read book Physicians of Western Medicine written by Robert A. Hahn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1984-12-31 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After putting down this weighty (in all senses of the word) collection, the reader, be she or he physician or social scientist, will (or at least should) feel uncomfortable about her or his taken-for-granted commonsense (therefore cultural) understanding of medicine. The editors and their collaborators show the medical leviathan, warts and all, for what it is: changing, pluralistic, problematic, powerful, provocative. What medicine proclaims itself to be - unified, scientific, biological and not social, non-judgmental - it is shown not to resemble very much. Those matters about which medicine keeps fairly silent, it turns out, come closer to being central to its clinical practice - managing errors and learning to conduct a shared moral dis course about mistakes, handling issues of competence and competition among biomedical practitioners, practicing in value-laden contexts on problems for which social science is a more relevant knowledge base than biological science, integrating folk and scientific models of illness in clinical communication, among a large number of highly pertinent ethnographic insights that illuminate medicine in the chapters that follow.

Book Confessions of a Christian Physician

Download or read book Confessions of a Christian Physician written by Raymond West and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here's a Doctor who can write. Ray West, a self-confessed "understudy of the Great healer, Jesus Christ" chronicles in CONFESSIONS Incidents from three or more decades of medical practice. In a chatty style reminiscent of James Herriot's vignettes based on his veterinary practice, West introduces graphic events revealing the underside as well as the drama of interacting with patients, their family members and colleagues. Edna Maye Loveless, Esteemed Author and Educator Dr. Raymond West, a master storyteller and model of the ideal Family Physician (as well as teacher and researcher of Epidemiology) describes highlights of his career applying the basic principles of both science and art of medical practice. Examples of encounters from his years of successful caring for the emotional and spiritual as well as physical needs of patients, demonstrate for the reader, memorable examples of principles applicable to real life. Whether you are a medical care provider or a patient, you will love the stories and benefit from the inspiration of a Christ centered approach to the practice of medicine. Edwin H. Krick, MD, MPH., Associate professor of Medicine, Loma Linda University Doctor Raymond West's 'Confessions' is interesting in showing a Christian Doctor's life and temptations. He was one of returning sailors from WW2 who was given the opportunity, by a grateful government, to a medical profession previously limited mainly to the wealthy. This "GI surge" was responsibly, in great part, to a rapid technological progress in medicine. Dr. West's book reveals how this new technology has become a substitute for detailed questioning and manual examination of patients! He shows how a careful examination plus a knowledge of historical medicine is useful in diagnosis. His lifelong keeping of a detailed diary of interesting cases makes Dr. West and this book remarkable. I recommend it highly. Bernarr Johnson, MD, FACS

Book Valiant Doctors in the Frontier West

Download or read book Valiant Doctors in the Frontier West written by Dorothy Simpson and published by . This book was released on 2020-03 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amongst the brave pioneers who came by ship, then by wagon or by horseback looking for a new life in the New World, were doctors. Doctors who came seeking a salubrious climate, seeking a richer life, seeking to serve those courageous souls whose homes in Europe were to be exchanged for the unknown in the New World. The Spanish padres (priests) hoped to show the Native Americans the way of salvation; the doctors came with them, hoping to show them all the way of health. Whether treating patients on the Oregon Trail, in forts, small towns, or a remote cabin, a physician took his skills where they were needed. Early diseases included bilious fever, which often assumed a typhoid character; pleurisy, pneumonia, and scurvy; and there were other ailments due to exposure to weather, improper or insufficient food, and over-exertion. Wounds inflicted by Indians, smallpox epidemics, and gunshot wounds also took their toll. Later, small town doctors had to battle Scarlet fever, cholera, diphtheria, measles, whooping cough, typhoid, tuberculosis, and many other illnesses. Most frontier doctors carried firearms along with their medical bags and they dedicated their lives to helping others. Chapters include: Doctors in New Spain, Wagon Train Doctors, Doctors at Forts, Gunfighters' Doctors, Small Town Doctors, Country Doctors, and A Missionary Doctor. Each chapter ends with a list of references. A bibliography adds to the value of this work.

Book Doctors on Horseback

Download or read book Doctors on Horseback written by James Thomas Flexner and published by New York : The Viking Press. This book was released on 1937 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The man in the street would not, perhaps, recognize all the names of the brilliant scientists whose careers and personalities animate this book, but doctors know them. Morgan, who founded the first medical school in America and, fighting beside Washington, was ruined by the petty politics of the Revolution; McDowell, who, although on the fringe of the wilderness, dared the operation that prepared the way for all abdominal surgery; Rush, the equivocal personality who, for better or worse, dominated American medicine for more than fifty years; Beaumont, who, saving a life, won a living laboratory; Drake, who brought modern medicine to the new West; Long and Morton, who banished pain from surgery and earned it for themselves - these men are honored in their profession today. Mr. Flexner approaches his subject with authority, sympathy, and humor. The bitter antagonisms, personal jealousies, tragic misconceptions which inevitably arose are given their place in the story, but always the reader is conscious that these men were making lasting contributions to their profession and to their country. The book is one that will have immediate appeal for those who enjoy being behind the scenes of the scientific world, and for those who like to wander through the by ways of history.
