Book Save Our Selves from Science Gone Wrong

Download or read book Save Our Selves from Science Gone Wrong written by Shaun Johnston and published by Evolved Self Pub. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brisk and engaging manifesto reveals natural selection to be the flawed product of a science hobbled from birth by denial of the self. After pointing out a dozen dubious assumptions lying behind natural selection Johnston shows how sounder assumptions can lead to better theories. He ends by calling for popular opposition to natural selection and for scientists to come up with sounder mechanisms. Until then, he insists, no mechanism of evolution at all should be taught in the science classroom. This is no creationist tract. In his demonstration of how to arrive at new mechanisms Johnston conjures up a genome-self able to literally dream up new species, a mechanism much more corrosive of the supernatural than Darwinism. Mary Midgley, Gifford Lecture 1989-90, "Science As Salvation," and author of "Evolution as a Religion: Strange Hopes and Stranger Fears." "Shaun Johnston raises many fascinating questions, asking how it is that many scientists seem to find it so embarrassingly difficult to think about any sort of consciousness, especially their own, that they'd rather say it isn't there?... But they badly need to be pressed to roll up their sleeves and face it directly. So, all good wishes to Johnston as he pesters them to get over their scruples!" Robert G. B. Reid, Emeritus Professor of Biology at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, author of "Evolutionary Theory: The Unfinished Synthesis" and "Biological Emergences: Evolution by Natural Experiment." "In "Save Our Selves from Science Gone Wrong," Shaun Johnston presents selectionism as the science that has gone wrong, corrupting biology as well as pertinent aspects of sociology, philosophy, and the popular media. Such a strong voice deserves attention. Responding to the question "What do you put in its place?" Johnston begins with the consciousness of the individual self." John Horgan, author of "The End of Science: Facing the Limits of Knowledge in the Twilight of the Scientific Age." "Your take on Darwinism...is lively and provocative."

Book Why Evolution Is a Fraud

Download or read book Why Evolution Is a Fraud written by Tom Sutcliff and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written like a newspaper article, Why Evolution is a Fraud: A Secular and Common-Sense Deconstruction exposes the shocking racism and blatant distortions of this pseudo-scientific, atheistic philosophy. Regardless of your background in science (or lack thereof), Why Evolution is a Fraud is easy to understand, decisive and engrossing. What makes Why Evolution is a Fraud unique is that it breaks the tired old stalemate of âÂÂreligion versus scienceâ by using scientific facts and common sense to annihilate evolution. Definitive and heavily researched Why Evolution is a Fraud shows why the theory of evolution is mathematically and genetically impossible. The book also shows how such a weak, wannabe-science has survived in spite of mountains of evidence to the contrary. Readers who liked Treason by Ann Coulter, Blink & The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell will enjoy Why Evolution is a Fraud.

  • Author : Thomas Nagel
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

  • Pages : 141 pages

Download or read book Mind and Cosmos written by Thomas Nagel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-22 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern materialist approach to life has conspicuously failed to explain such central mind-related features of our world as consciousness, intentionality, meaning, and value. This failure to account for something so integral to nature as mind, argues philosopher Thomas Nagel, is a major problem, threatening to unravel the entire naturalistic world picture, extending to biology, evolutionary theory, and cosmology. Since minds are features of biological systems that have developed through evolution, the standard materialist version of evolutionary biology is fundamentally incomplete. And the cosmological history that led to the origin of life and the coming into existence of the conditions for evolution cannot be a merely materialist history, either. An adequate conception of nature would have to explain the appearance in the universe of materially irreducible conscious minds, as such. Nagel's skepticism is not based on religious belief or on a belief in any definite alternative. In Mind and Cosmos, he does suggest that if the materialist account is wrong, then principles of a different kind may also be at work in the history of nature, principles of the growth of order that are in their logical form teleological rather than mechanistic. In spite of the great achievements of the physical sciences, reductive materialism is a world view ripe for displacement. Nagel shows that to recognize its limits is the first step in looking for alternatives, or at least in being open to their possibility.

Book Evolutionary Philosophy

Download or read book Evolutionary Philosophy written by Ed Gibney and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolutionary Philosophy is the foundation text for a new belief system. We are all products of evolution. Understanding all of the implications of this statement leads to a comprehensive worldview that can answer our universally shared questions: Where did I come from? What am I? What is a good life? How do I know? These questions and many more are answered in this book, before the beliefs of 60 of the top philosophers of history are put to the test in an evaluation of the survival of their fittest ideas. This is an audacious work of research and analysis from author Ed Gibney, who finishes by asking readers to help Evolutionary Philosophy to grow and adapt as mankind's knowledge continues to accumulate. This clear and accessible work promises to help you reevaluate mankind's place in the universe and your place in society.

Book Evolutionary Debunking Arguments

Download or read book Evolutionary Debunking Arguments written by Diego E. Machuca and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-09 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in evolutionary debunking arguments directed against certain types of belief, particularly moral and religious beliefs. According to those arguments, the evolutionary origins of the cognitive mechanisms that produce the targeted beliefs render these beliefs epistemically unjustified. The reason is that natural selection cares for reproduction and survival rather than truth, and false beliefs can in principle be as evolutionarily advantageous as true beliefs. The present volume brings together fourteen essays that examine evolutionary debunking arguments not only in ethics and philosophy of religion, but also in philosophy of mathematics, metaphysics, and epistemology. The essays move forward research on those arguments by shedding fresh light on old problems and proposing new lines of inquiry. The book will appeal to scholars and graduate students interested in the possible skeptical implications of evolutionary theory in any of the above domains.

Book The Case Against Reality Why Evolution Hid the Truth from Our Eyes

Download or read book The Case Against Reality Why Evolution Hid the Truth from Our Eyes written by Donald Hoffman and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can we trust our senses to tell us the truth? Challenging leading scientific theories that claim that our senses report back objective reality, cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman argues that while we should take our perceptions seriously, we should not take them literally. From examining why fashion designers create clothes that give the illusion of a more “attractive” body shape to studying how companies use color to elicit specific emotions in consumers, and even dismantling the very notion that spacetime is objective reality, The Case Against Reality dares us to question everything we thought we knew about the world we see.

Book What Darwin Got Wrong

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jerry Fodor
  • Publisher : Profile Books
  • Release : 2011-02-24
  • ISBN : 1847651909
  • Pages : 114 pages

Download or read book What Darwin Got Wrong written by Jerry Fodor and published by Profile Books. This book was released on 2011-02-24 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerry Fodor and Massimo Piatelli-Palmarini, a distinguished philosopher and scientist working in tandem, reveal major flaws at the heart of Darwinian evolutionary theory. They do not deny Darwin's status as an outstanding scientist but question the inferences he drew from his observations. Combining the results of cutting-edge work in experimental biology with crystal-clear philosophical argument they mount a devastating critique of the central tenets of Darwin's account of the origin of species. The logic underlying natural selection is the survival of the fittest under changing environmental pressure. This logic, they argue, is mistaken. They back up the claim with evidence of what actually happens in nature. This is a rare achievement - the short book that is likely to make a great deal of difference to a very large subject. What Darwin Got Wrong will be controversial. The authors' arguments will reverberate through the scientific world. At the very least they will transform the debate about evolution.

Book The Evolution Delusion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bart Rask
  • Publisher : Universal-Publishers
  • Release : 2021-09-01
  • ISBN : 1627343350
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book The Evolution Delusion written by Bart Rask and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the field of evolution differ from other sciences? The author, a reviewer for a major medical journal, scrutinized hundreds of scientific references in evolutionary literature, adopting the same standards used for studies submitted for medical publication. The data show that there are two types of evolution, microevolution and macroevolution, with a clear boundary between them based upon the presence and absence of empirical evidence, respectively. The surprising results show that there is a universal disconnect between the data and the conclusions that claim to show the larger changes of macroevolution. The author reveals patterns of deviations from standard scientific methods in these studies. For the first time, evolutionary data have been summarized to describe both what evolution can and cannot accomplish. The author shows the reader how to recognize the different ways in which the evidence for microevolution within and between some species differs from the unsupported macroevolution of most species. Previous critiques of macroevolution have been debunked by advocates who have cited a multitude of scientific studies. This book goes beyond previous critiques by directly addressing the data from these studies to see if they do, in fact, support macroevolution-focused conclusions. Many expert counterarguments against this book’s thesis are presented and examined in the context of scientific research to reassure the reader that the author has left no stone unturned in the macroevolution debate. A theory is proposed as to why there may be no empirical evidence for macroevolution. The book concludes with a section entitled “What we see differently.” There, the author shows the reader the differences in perspective between the evolutionist and macroevolution critic as they look at and interpret the very same set of data.

Book The Waning of Materialism

Download or read book The Waning of Materialism written by Robert C. Koons and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-03-25 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-three philosophers examine the doctrine of materialism find it wanting. The case against materialism comprises arguments from conscious experience, from the unity and identity of the person, from intentionality, mental causation, and knowledge. The contributors include leaders in the fields of philosophy of mind, metaphysics, ontology, and epistemology, who respond ably to the most recent versions and defences of materialism. The modal arguments of Kripke and Chalmers, Jackson’s knowledge argument, Kim’s exclusion problem, and Burge’s anti-individualism all play a part in the building of a powerful cumulative case against the materialist research program. Several papers address the implications of contemporary brain and cognitive research (the psychophysics of color perception, blindsight, and the effects of commissurotomies), adding a posteriori arguments to the classical a priori critique of reductionism. All of the current versions of materialism — reductive and non-reductive, functionalist, eliminativist, and new wave materialism — come under sustained and trenchant attack. In addition, a wide variety of alternatives to the materialist conception of the person receive new and illuminating attention, including anti-materialist versions of naturalism, property dualism, Aristotelian and Thomistic hylomorphism, and non-Cartesian accounts of substance dualism.

This book was released on 1998-05-06 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today many school students are shielded from one of the most important concepts in modern science: evolution. In engaging and conversational style, Teaching About Evolution and the Nature of Science provides a well-structured framework for understanding and teaching evolution. Written for teachers, parents, and community officials as well as scientists and educators, this book describes how evolution reveals both the great diversity and similarity among the Earth's organisms; it explores how scientists approach the question of evolution; and it illustrates the nature of science as a way of knowing about the natural world. In addition, the book provides answers to frequently asked questions to help readers understand many of the issues and misconceptions about evolution. The book includes sample activities for teaching about evolution and the nature of science. For example, the book includes activities that investigate fossil footprints and population growth that teachers of science can use to introduce principles of evolution. Background information, materials, and step-by-step presentations are provided for each activity. In addition, this volume: Presents the evidence for evolution, including how evolution can be observed today. Explains the nature of science through a variety of examples. Describes how science differs from other human endeavors and why evolution is one of the best avenues for helping students understand this distinction. Answers frequently asked questions about evolution. Teaching About Evolution and the Nature of Science builds on the 1996 National Science Education Standards released by the National Research Councilâ€"and offers detailed guidance on how to evaluate and choose instructional materials that support the standards. Comprehensive and practical, this book brings one of today's educational challenges into focus in a balanced and reasoned discussion.
