Book Numerical Simulation of Supersonic and Hypersonic Inlet Flow Fields

This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the research performed by North Carolina State University and NASA Ames Research Center under Cooperative Agreement NCA2-719, 'Numerical Simulation of Supersonic and Hypersonic Inlet Flow Fields". Four distinct rotated upwind schemes were developed and investigated to determine accuracy and practicality. The scheme found to have the best combination of attributes, including reduction to grid alignment with no rotation, was the cell centered non-orthogonal (CCNO) scheme. In 2D, the CCNO scheme improved rotation when flux interpolation was extended to second order. In 3D, improvements were less dramatic in all cases, with second order flux interpolation showing the least improvement over grid aligned upwinding. The reduction in improvement is attributed to uncertainty in determining optimum rotation angle and difficulty in performing accurate and efficient interpolation of the angle in 3D. The CCNO rotational technique will prove very useful for increasing accuracy when second order interpolation is not appropriate and will materially improve inlet flow solutions. Mcrae, D. Book Numerical Simulation of Compressible Euler Flows

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Compressible Euler Flows written by Alain Dervieux and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerical simulation of the Euler equations of Fluid Dynamics has been these past few years a challenging problem both for research scientists and aerospace engineers. The increasing interest of more realistic models such as the Euler equations originates in Aerodynamics and also Aerothermics where aerospace applications such as military aircrafts and also space vehicles require accurate and efficient Euler solvers (which can be extended to more complicated modelisations including non-equilibrium chemistry) for su personic and hypersonic flows at high angles of attack and Mach number regimes involving strong shocks and vorticity. This book contains the proceedings of the GAMM Workshop on the Numerical Simu lation of Compressible Euler Flows. that W:LS held at INRIA, Rocquencourt (France), on June 10-13, 1986. The purpose of this event was to compare in terms of accuracy and efficiency several codes for solving compressible inviscid, mainly steady, Euler flows. This workshop was a sequel of the GAMM workshop held in 1979 in Stockholm; this time, though, because of the present strong activity in numerical methods for the Euler equat.ions, the full-potential approach was not included. Since 1979, other Eulpr workshops have been organised, sev eral of them focussed on airfoil calculations; however, many recently derived methods were not presented at these workshops, because, among other reasons, the methods were not far enough developed, or had not been applied to flow problems of sufficient complexity. In fact, the 1986 GAMM workshop scored very high as regards to the novelty of methods.

Book Numerical Simulation of Supersonic Compression Corners and Hypersonic Inlet Flows Using the Rplus2d Code

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Supersonic Compression Corners and Hypersonic Inlet Flows Using the Rplus2d Code written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-12-29 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two-dimensional computational code, PRLUS2D, which was developed for the reactive propulsive flows of ramjets and scramjets, was validated for two-dimensional shock-wave/turbulent-boundary-layer interactions. The problem of compression corners at supersonic speeds was solved using the RPLUS2D code. To validate the RPLUS2D code for hypersonic speeds, it was applied to a realistic hypersonic inlet geometry. Both the Baldwin-Lomax and the Chien two-equation turbulence models were used. Computational results showed that the RPLUS2D code compared very well with experimentally obtained data for supersonic compression corner flows, except in the case of large separated flows resulting from the interactions between the shock wave and turbulent boundary layer. The computational results compared well with the experiment results in a hypersonic NASA P8 inlet case, with the Chien two-equation turbulence model performing better than the Baldwin-Lomax model. Book Large Eddy Simulation of Supersonic Inlet Flows

Download or read book Large Eddy Simulation of Supersonic Inlet Flows written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of a shock wave with a turbulent boundary layer is a central problem in supersonic inlet flows. This work uses numerical and analytical techniques to study shock/turbulence interaction in order to identify and explain factors important in shock/boundary layer interaction. Direct numerical simulation of a normal shock wave with an isotropic turbulent field of vorticity and entropy fluctuations showed that negative upstream correlation between the vorticity and entropy fluctuations enhances the turbulence across the shock. Positive upstream correlation has a suppressing effect. A new numerical method providing excellent high wavenumber resolution while reducing the computational cost was developed. A model with no adjustable constants was developed to study the vortex breakdown resulting from the interaction of canard or forbody vortices with the shock waves in a supersonic inlet flow. Very good agreement with both experiment and computation was obtained. A numerical method to compute shock/turbulence interaction using a conservative form of the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) equations has been developed and validated. LES of the interaction of isotropic turbulence with a normal shock was performed and comparisons with direct numerical simulation (DNS) results were favorable. A new Fortran 90 code has been developed for the computation of shock/turbulence interaction. The code is an improved version of codes used previously in shock/turbulence interaction simulations.

Book Towards a Numerical Simulation of Supersonic Mixing Combustion

Download or read book Towards a Numerical Simulation of Supersonic Mixing Combustion written by Mohammed Kamel and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and off-design studies of the hypersonic air-breathing engines face many challenges, due to the complexity of their internal flows. The mixing and combustion processes in Supersonic-Combustion Ramjet (scramjet) engines involve complicated aerothermochemical features, such as: the interactions between shock-waves and boundary-layer, the shock induced-combustion and the recirculation zones. In this study, a numerical solver is developed and validated to be an efficient design tool capable of simulating these complicated flow features of the supersonic combustors. For the code validation, several test cases are considered to monitor the code ability to solve for the diffusive and turbulent fluxes, and the chemical source term. In addition, the code is validated by resolving the transverse sonic injection into supersonic air flow in the case of Helium injection from a flat plate, and in the case of Hydrogen injection in a single-strut scramjet engine. The effectiveness of this injection technique in mixing and flame-holding is demonstrated. The results show good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental investigations, and prove the simulator's accuracy.
