Book Lectures on Some of the Physical Properties of Soil Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Some of the Physical Properties of Soil Classic Reprint written by Robert Warington and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Some of the Physical Properties of Soil The behaviour of actual soils under known conditions has been made as far as possible the foundation of the conclusions drawn. A great mass of results has accumulated from the investigations made in the very numerous Agricultural Experiment Stations in Europe and America; with these results the agricultural teacher is too often unacquainted. His valid excuse is the scattered publication of the reports, and his want of time to correlate the several results recorded. The writer hopes that the publication of these lectures will stimulate others to labour in the abundant harvest field of Experiment Station Reports. It must ever be borne in mind that it is only on the results of experimental investigations that Agricultural Science can be safely built. The reader will probably be surprised that so little is said respecting English soils, and so much respecting the soils of America. The writer heartily wishes that this might have been otherwise. In fact, however, the physical constitution and properties of English soils have as yet not been investigated, save in a very few exceptional cases; this has been doubtless due to the great lack of investigators and research laboratories in this country. The general properties of soils can of course be equally well illustrated by any well studied examples, but the deficiency of knowledge of our own local soils is nevertheless a very real evil, and must greatly hinder the practical application of general principles. Book Soils and Their Properties Classic Reprint

Download or read book Soils and Their Properties Classic Reprint written by William Fream and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soils and Their Properties The recognition of the work done by micro-organisms marks a most important advance in our knowledge of the phenomena involved in the metabolism (gr. Metabole, change) of the' soil. Hitherto, investigation has been directed rather to the determination of the immediate effects of soil metabolism in promoting the nutrition of plants. But it is at least possible that the biological fac tors in metabolic activity may eventually be proved to be not less potent than the physical and chemical agents in effecting the disintegration of rocks, and thus in restoring to the soil those mineral ingredients which are undergoing incessant loss. Our knowledge of the biology of the soil is hardly yet in a sufficiently settled condition to be made the subject of an elementary manual. All that is attempted, there fore, In 'the following pages is to trace soils back to their parent rocks, to indicate some of their more important physical and chemical properties, and to give a brief account of the distribution of soils within the British Isles. It is proposed to follow this Volume with another, in the same series, upon the practical management of the soil. Book The Color of Soils Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Color of Soils Classic Reprint written by William Orrin Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Color of Soils The color of soils has long occupied the attention of both geologists and agriculturists and has considerable importance theoretically and practically. Theoretically the color is of importance as a guide to the origin and processes involved in the formation of the soil and as an indication of the relative age of any particular soil. It is of practical importance because it determines to a greater or less extent the absorption of the sun's energy, and is often a guide to the drainage conditions, to the crop adaptations, and to the cultural methods best suited to the soil. It is the object of this bulletin to publish the results of an investiga tion-into the causes of certain colors in soils, and particularly the causes of differences in color between the popularly named red and' yellow soils in connection with the agricultural significance of Such differences. In, addition to this, certain of the chemical and physical properties of iron compounds and their solutions will be considered It must be recognized that soil colors are not pure colors, but at best are Shades and tints. Thus the material by which soils ordinarily considered red are colored is ferric ox1de, which itself is never a pure red, for it varies from dark brown to yellowish, and when in the soil it is further tinted and Shaded by other materials. When applied to soils the color descriptions used in this bulletin mean the tints and shades which for the sake of Simplicity are termed red, yellow, brown black, or Simple combinations of these. Book Physical Properties of Hawaii Soils with Special Reference to the Colloidal Fraction Classic Reprint

Download or read book Physical Properties of Hawaii Soils with Special Reference to the Colloidal Fraction Classic Reprint written by Charles Richter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Properties of Hawaii Soils, With Special Reference to the Colloidal Fraction The origin, formation, and composition Of tropical Hawaii soils invest them with physical and chemical properties which vary widely and are quite unlike those Of the soils Of the mainland Of the United States. In some cases they also differ considerably from those Of Soils Of other tropical countries. The large amounts Of fine material, organic and Inorganic, with a chemical composition typical Of lateritic decomposition, cause condi tions which are radically different from those Of other Soils and which are sometimes extreme in nature, Moisture relationships especially exhibit unusual behavior In many Of the soils. It has long been known that the colloidal fraction Of the soil plays a significant role In the soil complex phenomena. The investigations Of the past decade have definitely established the fact that practically all the essential properties Of soils are directly or indirectly linked with the Colloidal phase, and that such important processes as flocculation, drainage, plasticity, moisture holding capacity, shrinkage, fixation and availability Of plant food elements, hydrogen Ion concentration, and base exchange are functions Of the colloidal part Of the soil. The soils Of Hawaii, because Of the above mentioned differences In origin, formation, and composition, may be logically expected to exhibit a difference in the nature Of the colloidal complex as com pared with Soils of other countries. Book Modification of the Method of Mechanical Soil Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modification of the Method of Mechanical Soil Analysis Classic Reprint written by Charles Cloyes Fletcher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modification of the Method of Mechanical Soil Analysis The mechanical analysis of the soil, as carried out in the Bureau of Soils, has been devised as an expedient method of obtaining a quantitative statement for the classification of soils on a physical basis. There exists a close relationship between the mechanical com position and most of the physical' properties of soils, although the exact nature of the relationship is not. Yet. Satisfactorily known. Many attempts have been made to classify soils upon the basis of some physical property, but to measure any physical property of soils without regard to the mechanical composition would disregard those relations of most importance in the practical management of soils. The physical properties of a soil are dependent upon the structure of the soil as well as upon the mechanical composition. The organic matter present influences both composition and structure. Hence we have a number of dependent variables of whose relations. To one another we yet know very little. But the mechanical composition of any particular soil remains reasonably constant, so that, it has been adopted as a basis for classification until the relationship ex isting between mechanical composition and the physical properties of the soil have become better known. The classification of soils on this basis is of agricultural value, as certain obvious characteristics attach to clays, loams, sands, ietc., as classes. In the mechanical analysis the soil is divided into a number of different grades of particles, whose dimensions lie between definite limits, and the percentage by weight of each of these grades is de termined. In general, the basic methods used in mechanical analysis are separation of different size particles by sifting in the case of the larger particles, and by sedimentation (usually in water) in case of the smaller ones. Various successful modifications have been devised, based on these methods. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
