Where possible, the long-term averages are standardized to a base period from 1971 to 2000 in accordance with the convention of the World Meteorological Organization. The information is derived from observations made at oceanographic stations, along standard cross-shelf sections, and during multi-species research vessel surveys. Parameters measured include temperature, salinity, temperature & salinity anomalies, dissolved oxygen saturation, and geostrophic currents.

Most of the time series presented had good temporal coverage between the years 1971-2000. The information presented for 2004 is derived from 3 principal sources: observations made at Station 27 throughout the year from all research and assessment surveys, measurements made along standard NAFO and AZMP cross-shelf sections from seasonal oceanographic surveys, and oceanographic observations made during the spring and fall multi-species research vessel surveys. Data from other sources are also used to help define the long-term means and conditions during 2004.
