Herschel describes it in the following words We find ourselves thus introduced to the domain of Physical Geography, or the description of the actual state of the earth's surface in its three great divisions - land, sea, and air, as prepared for the habitation of organic beings, and as exhibiting the play of all those complex agencies on which depend the distribution of temperature and moisture, aerial and oceanic currents, and those conditions which, under the general title of climate, determine the abundance and limits of vegetable and animal forms. Thus as to the objects and scope of Physical Geography we are fully instructed by the eminent men who brought it into vogue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Geography, or the Terraqueous Globe and Its Phenomena Many, perhaps, on looking at this volume will be disposed to ask, "What is Physical Geography?" To this question (which, under existing circumstances, is not inexcusable) I would reply that it is the department of science which embraces the course of Physics reigning on the earth's surface, over land, sea, and air, and of which, as it depends to some extent on the feature of that surface, Geography is a function. Nature is regarded by the philosopher as an organic whole, connected throughout and regulated by laws. In his language the word Physical always refers to nature thus conceived, to its rational principles and its laws. Thus, while Descriptive Astronomy depicts the heavens and enumerates the various bodies that revolve in them, Physical Astronomy explains how they arc governed in all their movements by gravitation. Of the World Veries, which, at firft Sight, appeared extremely difficult: And indeed, if our Ideas were purfued in the Way familiar to Students in Geometry, they would carry our Thoughts farther, and with greater Evidence and Clearnefs than we are apt to imagine. As to Aftronomy, I have not only explained the cc leftial Motions, but likewife the Reafons Of the fe veral Phenomena arifing therefrom, fo far as can be underftood and demonitrated by the Help of the Geometry in this Treatife, ' avoiding thofe things (as Matters of too much Difficulty) which require a thorough Knowledge of the higher Geometry. Be {ides this, I have explained the Caufes Of the celefiial Motions; and demonfirated, that there is an imi verfal Power of Gravity acting in the folar Syfiem, whereby the primary Planets are drawn Off from their natural, rec'tilinear Motions, and kept in their Orbits. That this Power or Force does not tend to' wards the Earth, but the Sun; and that this Force, or Gravity, is the fame which caufes all heavy Bodies to tend to the Centre of the Earth: And, laptly, that: the Motion, which caufes the Succe ion of Day and Night, and the apparent Rifing and Setting of the Stars in the Space of Twenty-four Hours, belongs to the Earth, and not to the Heavens. Though the Edefi of this Power, or Virtue, is [o vifible, in de feending Bodies towards the Center Of the Earth; yet Nature fcarce affords any Problem, wherein the Caufe is more concealed It is by this {ingle Prin ciple, that the Earth, and all the celeftial Bodies, are kept from Diliolution, the leali of their Particles not. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earth, Vol. 2: A Descriptive History of the Phenomena of the Life of the Globe; Continents On account of these partitions it is very difficult, or even impossible, to navigate the course of subterranean rivers to any considerable distance, even at the time the water is low. When it is high, the liquid mass, detained by the partitions, rises to a very high level in the large interior cavities, and often reaches the roof above. Some times when, through the clefts of the rocks, a communication exists between the cave and some hollow above, the surplus water from the subterranean streams makes its appearance there. Thus the Becca, which flows beneath the adjacent plateau of Trieste, does not always find space enough to flow freely in its lower channels, and Schmidl has seen it ascend in the chasms of Trebich to a height of 341 feet. Lit may be understood that the pressure of such a column of water often shatters enormous pieces of rock, and thus modifies the course bf underground streams. Download or read book A Pictorial Geography of the World Vol 2 written by Samuel Griswold Goodrich and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pictorial Geography of the World, Vol. 2: Comprising a System of Universal Geography, Popular and Scientific; The New World In the preparation of this volume, it has been a leading object to dwell at length on those parts of the globe slightly noticed in the original work, but which the progress of events has brought, and' 18 bringing, more conspicuously into notice. Another object has been to furnish a more full account of those countries in which, as the seats of the most advanced civilization, and the centres of movement, the reader would naturally feel the greatest interest. The Introduction includes much valuable scien tific information bearing on the subject of physical geography. In the body of the work, an account is given of the rapidly growing provinces of British North America, more full, and based on more recent information than is to be found elsewhere. Due attention has also been paid to the rising British colonies of Australia. A laigo space is devoted to Bumpe, and especially to the British Empire, an the country in which, next to his own, the reader would naturally feel the deepest interest. The articles on the United States, besides giving the results of the recent geographical explorations of the western portions of our territory, both the old and that more recently acquired, embody the most important statistical returns of 'the census of 1850. It will be observed that the two parts, the one relating to the Old World, and the other to the New World, are paged separately, and that each has a separate Index.
