Book excerpt: Physical forcing drives the space and time discontinuity (patchiness) of plankton in the ocean. The thesis was focused on the role of these forcing on the zooplankton, studied using both acoustic and traditional methods with net sampling. The study was based on two examples. The first one concerns the northwestern Sargasso Sea where high resolution time-series data on 0-200m macrozooplankton abundance and distribution off Bermuda was estimated from volume backscattering strength (Sv) measured with a 153-Khz ADCP. Three types of eddies were identified: a productive cyclonic eddy, the periphery of a mode water eddy, and the periphery of an anticyclonic eddy. Sv values increased during passage of theses eddies, with a more pronounced increase associated with the edge of the cyclonic and the anticyclonic eddies, suggesting a significant biological response to localized upwelling in the high velocity boundary of these eddies. In the second example, spatial and temporal distribution of zooplankton off New Caledonia was studied during two multidisciplinary cruises in 2011. Zooplankton variability was assessed using net sampling together with acoustic measurements (shipborne ADCP, scientific echosounder and TAPS). Higher amplitudes of diel vertical migration (DVM) of zooplankton were associated with higher abundance of large zooplankton and cold waters to the south of the study area, while lower DVM amplitudes in the north were associated with warmer waters and higher abundance of small organisms. These acoustic measurements clearly evidenced the role of physical forcing, particularly mesoscale features, in shaping zooplankton space and time distribution.

Clarke 1933 p. 434 In oceans and lakes, zooplankton often make diel vertical migrations (DVM), descending at dawn and coming up again in late afternoon and evening. The small animals cover distances of 10–40 m in lakes or even a few hundred metres in the open oceans. Although not as spectacular as migrations of birds or the massive movements of large mammals over the African savannas, the numbers involved are very large and the biomass exceed the bulk of the African herds. For example, in the Antarctic oceans swarms of “Krill” may cover kilometres across, with thousands of individuals per cubic metre. These Euphausiids are food for whales, the most bulky animals on earth. Zooplankton are key species in the pelagic food web, intermediary between algae and ?sh, and thus essential for the functioning of the pelagic community. Prey for many, they have evolved diverse strategies of survival and DVM is the most imp- tant one. Most ?sh are visually hunting predators and need a high light intensity to detect the often transparent animals. By moving down, the well-lit surface layers are avoided but they have to come up again at night to feed on algae.

Book excerpt: We have pioneered methods for using modern, high resolution sampling technology (the Optical Plankton Counter, or OPC) to: (1) Demonstrate the strong relationship between physical forcing and zooplankton distributions at the mesoscale. Our studies in the California Current show that zooplankton distributions and dynamics are strongly forced by mesoscale features such as eddies and jets. This scale of interaction has gone entirely unobserved by the 50 year long CalCOFl program due to sampling bias. (2) Develop a new method, based on biomass spectral theory, for estimating the productivity of zooplankton at high spatial and temporal resolution. This method utilizes data gathered from OPC, and can be applied easily and rapidly. Our example of application in the California Current demonstrated low productivity in the central jet, and higher productivity in the eddy region immediately adjacent to the jet. (3) Elucidate the mechanism of biological attraction, a biological force that acts to counter dispersive physical forces, and thus to maintain aggregations of single species on fine scale (100s of meters). We developed the theory and demonstrated its application, again with modern sampling technology (ADCP). The successful completion of this project has clearly demonstrated the application of several modern biological measuring devices that can be effectively deployed at the same temporal and spatial scales as might be common in physical oceanography. The conjunction of these methods with concurrent physical measurements is an extremely powerful tool for understanding marine ecosystems.
