Book Water Quality and Streamflow in the Caribou Poker Creeks Research Watershed Central Alaska 1979 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Water Quality and Streamflow in the Caribou Poker Creeks Research Watershed Central Alaska 1979 Classic Reprint written by Jerry W. Hilgert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Quality and Streamflow in the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed, Central Alaska, 1979 Baseline data from 1979 are presented on precipitation, streamflow, occurrence of permafrost, and physical and chemical water quality in a subarctic, tiaga watershed. First to third-order streams drain catchments embracing permafrost-underlain and permafrost-free landscapes in the undisturbed research watershed. The data are compared to those from a fourth-order stream impacted by placer mining; streams in the research watershed drain into the fourth-order stream slightly beyond the watershed border. These and subsequent baseline data sets will be used to compare natural conditions in undisturbed streams of the subarctic to conditions in streams impacted by resource management activities and to evaluate the impacts of such activities on stream ecosystems. Keyword: Baseline data, water quality, streamflow, subarctic environment, Alaska (caribou-poker Creeks research watershed). Book Soils of the Caribou Poker Creeks Research Watershed Interior Alaska

Download or read book Soils of the Caribou Poker Creeks Research Watershed Interior Alaska written by and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soils of the 41.5 sq miles Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed, central Alaska, have been mapped by standard Soil Conservation Service (USDA) methods. Seven soil series are recognized: Bradway silt loams, Ester silt loams, Karshner silt loams and Saulich silt loams, all underlain by permafrost at shallow depth, make up 27% of the basin area. Olnes silt loams, Gilmore silt loams and Fairplay silt loams, covering 73% of the watershed area, are free from permafrost. Areal distribution of soils is depicted on a photo-mosaic base at 1:31, 680 scale. (Author).

Book Alaska s Changing Boreal Forest

Download or read book Alaska s Changing Boreal Forest written by F. Stuart Chapin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-12 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The boreal forest is the northern-most woodland biome, whose natural history is rooted in the influence of low temperature and high-latitude. Alaska's boreal forest is now warming as rapidly as the rest of Earth, providing an unprecedented look at how this cold-adapted, fire-prone forest adjusts to change. This volume synthesizes current understanding of the ecology of Alaska's boreal forests and describes their unique features in the context of circumpolar and global patterns. It tells how fire and climate contributed to the biome's current dynamics. As climate warms and permafrost (permanently frozen ground) thaws, the boreal forest may be on the cusp of a major change in state. The editors have gathered a remarkable set of contributors to discuss this swift environmental and biotic transformation. Their chapters cover the properties of the forest, the changes it is undergoing, and the challenges these alterations present to boreal forest managers. In the first section, the reader can absorb the geographic and historical context for understanding the boreal forest. The book then delves into the dynamics of plant and animal communities inhabiting this forest, and the biogeochemical processes that link these organisms. In the last section the authors explore landscape phenomena that operate at larger temporal and spatial scales and integrates the processes described in earlier sections. Much of the research on which this book is based results from the Bonanza Creek Long-Term Ecological Research Program. Here is a synthesis of the substantial literature on Alaska's boreal forest that should be accessible to professional ecologists, students, and the interested public.

Book Thermokarst Evolution and Sediment Transport Study in the Caribou Poker Creeks Research Watershed Alaska

Download or read book Thermokarst Evolution and Sediment Transport Study in the Caribou Poker Creeks Research Watershed Alaska written by Prathap Kodial and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The role of sediment transport processes in the development and evolution of cryogenic features like thermo karsts have been overlooked by researchers. The current study is an attempt to better understand sediment transport and associated processes underlying the rapid growth of a thermokarst located in the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed. Within a short span of two warm summers, the study area has progressed from a hummocky terrain to a well incised channel configuration. Suspended sediment concentration and discharge analyses indicate high sediment flow following precipitation events, which play a major part in the sediment transport process. Mass sediment flows due to cryogenic piping were a result of interflow within the active layer. Fluvio-thermal erosion triggered block failures in the thermokarst. Topographical surveys spanning the two field seasons quantify the upstream erosion rate of more than 3.5 meters per year. Accelerated growth of the thermokarst has made the adjacent areas highly susceptible to secondary geomorphologic features"--Leaf iii.

Book Caribou Poker Creeks Research Watershed Interior Alaska Background and Current Status

Download or read book Caribou Poker Creeks Research Watershed Interior Alaska Background and Current Status written by Charles W. Slaughter and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed was established in 1969 as a site for cooperative, inter-agency investigation of hydrologic and related aspects of a subarctic environemnt. The relatively undisturbed 4O-square-mile drainage basin includes both permafrost-dominated and non-permafrost watersheds, and has a variety of vegetation communities. Initial research is directed to furthering understanding of hydrologic behavior of north-facing (permafrost) and south-facing (non-permafrost) basins in this upland setting. (Author).

Book Drainage Network Analysis of a Subarctic Watershed

Download or read book Drainage Network Analysis of a Subarctic Watershed written by Steven R. Bredthauer and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Strahler stream order analysis and an exterior link length distribution analysis were made of the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed, near Fairbanks, Alaska. The drainage network map used for analysis was produced using a 1:2250 scale aerial photograph mosaic. Low drainage densities, ranging from 1.35 km/sq km to 5.34 km/sq km, characterize the basins. Bifurcation ratios indicate that the overall drainage network is not dominated by strong geologic controls. Statistical analysis indicates that bifurcating source links and tributary source links do not belong to the same length population, a characteristic shared by watersheds in other climatic regions of the world. Additional analysis indicates that exterior links originating on permafrost slopes tend to be shorter than those originating on non-permafrost, well-drained slopes. (Author).
