Book Genetic Architecture of Species Level Differences in Begonia Section Gireoudia

Download or read book Genetic Architecture of Species Level Differences in Begonia Section Gireoudia written by Mobina Shaukat Ali and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Begonia is one of the ten largest plant genera and is found throughout the tropics. I have used Begonia section Gireoudia to study the genetics underlying vegetative diversity in tropical herbaceous plants. Section Gireoudia is a large Central American group. The section is remarkably diverse in morphology and habitat preference. It ranges from wet rainforests to seasonally dry forests. I have investigated variation in morphological, anatomical and ecophysiological differences for 21 species in Begonia section Gireoudia. Based on the observed variation, species in Begonia section Gireoudia form a complex and unique group that stands out from currently analysed taxa in the global scale of variation on the basis of leaf function and resource use strategy traits as well as their peculiar leaf anatomy. Traits directly related to leaf function such as photosynthesis and stomatal conductance has very low values which overlap with those of CAM and aquatic plants. Values for traits indicative of resource use such as leaf mass area (LMA) and leaf dry matter content (LDMC) are also very low in Begonia when compared with the values observed globally. The trait- trait correlations across the species in section Gireoudia were also investigated and revealed patterns in micromorphology and ecophysiology. Some of the traits measured are correlated with each other in apparently straightforward, well charaterised biological relationships e.g., the variation among Begonia species in stomatal conductance and net assimilation rate are positively correlated. On the other hand, the linkage of high Amass with high Nmass which is in large part the result of a direct causal relationship, has been observed at the global scale but this relationship is not significant in Begonia section Gireoudia. I examined B. plebeja and B. conchifolia, two very closely related though ecologically divergent species from Meso-America, in more detail. I detected significant differences between the species for a number of phenotypic variables which may be related to their habitat preferences. This suggested that environmental conditions have driven divergent evolution of phenotypic traits for these two species. Using a mapping population generated from hybrids between these two species I was able to examine the genetic basis of these differences. This revealed that although some traits (such as anthocyanin accumulation) appear to be under simple genetic control, most of the variation between species has complex genetic inheritance patterns. I used QTL analysis to identify significant QTLs for 20 physiological, anatomical and morphological traits which varied between these two species. Leaf shape traits appear to be largely influenced by a few loci of large effect, making these good potential targets for further analysis. The study also identified clusters of coincident QTLs for different correlated traits identifying pleiotropic genes or suites of linked loci.

Book Seed Micromorphology of Neotropical Begonias

Download or read book Seed Micromorphology of Neotropical Begonias written by Anton De Lange and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seeds of about 235 Neotropical Begonia species, representing almost all recognized American Begonia sections, were studied using scanning electron microscopy. The seeds show an appreciable diversity in size, shape, and micromorphology, which is helpful in the delimitation of sections and sometimes also of species. Mean seed length varies from 235 m in Begonia filipes to 1450 m in B. fruticosa; most seeds have a length between 300 m and 600 m. The shape of the seeds varies from almost globular to narrowly elliptic, and the length to width ratio ranges from 1.2 in B. hexandra to 8.1 in B. fruticosa. Further differences exist in the shape of the testal cells, the undulation of the anticlinal walls, the bulging of the outer periclinal walls, and the pattern and roughness of the cuticle. Five of the 15 mainly Brazilian, five of the 12 Andean and Guianan, and one of the eight middle American sections have a seed structure that is characteristic at the sectional level. All these sections have a relatively restricted geographical distribution, and they may differ in growth form or habitat. Most species of the other sections, including the larger and more widely distributed sections Begonia, Gireoudia, and Knesebeckia, have seeds conforming to the ordinary seed type. In a number of the sections, the structural differences of the seeds are nicely correlated with differences in growth form and/or in means of dispersal. In contrast to the African begonias, the great majority of the Neotropical begonias have anemoballistic dispersal. Seeds may be adapted to wind dispersal by extended micropylar and/or chalazal ends with inflated, air-filled cells, such as in the Brazilian sections Solananthera, Trendelenburgia, and Enita and in the Andean section Rossmannia, or by a more pronounced surface with deep, collapsed testal cells, such as in sections Gobenia and Scheidweileria. Zooballistic dispersal by passing animals is supposed to be present in section Casparya. The seeds of sections Casparya and Trachelocarpus have very pronounced cuticular patterns and may be secondarily dispersed by rain wash or by adhering to animals. No distinct indications for an intercontinental relationship between Neotropical, African, and Asiatic sections could be established.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driven by the increasing necessity to define the biological diversity frame of widespread, endemic and threatened species, as well as by the stimulating chance to describe new species, the study of the evolutive and spatial dynamics is in constant execution. Systematic overviews, biogeographic and phylogenic backgrounds, species composition and distribution in restricted areas are focal topics of the 15 interesting independent chapters collected in this book, chosen to offer to the reader an overall view of the present condition in which our planet is.

Download or read book Flowering Plants Eudicots written by Klaus Kubitzki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-10 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the tenth in the series, comprises modern treatments for the families and genera of the eudicot orders Sapindales and Cucurbitales. The circumscription of the orders, families and genera conforms to the most recent systematic studies. The family treatments include descriptions of the families and the genera, genera classification keys, discussions of relationships and data on their morphology, reproductive biology, distribution, ecology and economic importance. Sapindales and Cucurbitales, as understood in this volume, comprise 16 families with 637 genera and roughly 9,240 species. Sapindales include large tropical and southern temperate tree families such as the Anacardiaceae, Sapindaceae (these in the modern circumscription, which includes Aceraceae and Hippocastanaceae), Meliaceae and Rutaceae, which have long been considered to be closely related. Cucurbitales represent a relatively new ordinal concept; apart from some small woody groups, the order contains two large families, Cucurbitaceae and Begoniaceae, which are predominantly, and likely basically, herbaceous. A detailed treatment of the tropical and southern temperate woody family Myrtaceae (itself comprising 142 genera and 6,700 species) is an addendum to the treatment of the Myrtales in Vol. IX of this series.
