Download or read book Physiological Responses of Plants to Attack written by Dale Walters and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-02-23 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the research effort put into controlling pathogens, pestsand parasitic plants, crop losses are still a regular feature ofagriculture worldwide. This makes it important to manage the cropappropriately in order to maximise yield. Understanding therelationship between the occurrence and severity of attack, and theresulting yield loss, is an important step towards improved cropprotection. Linked to this, is the need to better understand themechanisms responsible for reductions in growth and yield inaffected crops. Physiological Responses of Plants to Attack is unique because itdeals with the effects of different attackers – pathogens, herbivores, and parasitic plants, on host processes involved ingrowth, reproduction, and yield. Coverage includes effects onphotosynthesis, partitioning of carbohydrates, water and nutrientrelations, and changes in plant growth hormones. Far from beingsimply a consequence of attack, the alterations in primarymetabolism reflect a more dynamic and complex interaction betweenplant and attacker, sometimes involving re-programming of plantmetabolism by the attacker. Physiological Responses of Plants to Attack is written anddesigned for use by senior undergraduates and postgraduatesstudying agricultural sciences, applied entomology, cropprotection, plant pathology and plant sciences. Biological andagricultural research scientists in the agrochemical and cropprotection industries, and in academia, will find much of use inthis book. All libraries in universities and researchestablishments where biological and agricultural sciences arestudied and taught should have copies of this exciting book ontheir shelves

Download or read book Environmental Contaminants in Aquatic Systems and Chemical Safety for Environmental and Human Health Volume II written by Mohiuddin Md. Taimur Khan and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-10-16 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic is Volume 2 in the Environmental Contaminants in Aquatic Systems and Chemical Safety for Environmental and Human Health series: Given the finite supply of water available for human use, the continued chemical contamination of the aquatic environment may pose a significant human health hazard. Consequently, an effort must be made to develop ambient water quality criteria to protect human health and preserve the integrity of the aquatic environment. In developing water quality criteria based on human health effects, information on sources of exposure, pharmacokinetics, and adverse effects must be carefully evaluated and acknowledged. Information and fundamental knowledge on the sources of exposure are needed to determine the contribution of exposure from water relative to all other sources.

Download or read book Genetic advancements for improving the plant tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses written by Krishnanand P. Kulkarni and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crop plants are constantly exposed to multiple abiotic (such as drought, salinity, cold, flooding, heavy metal, and heat) and/or biotic (bacterial/fungal/viral) stress factors that hinder their growth and development, subsequently leading to decreases in quality and yield. During the last two decades, many classical genetic and breeding approaches have been used to develop stress-tolerant and climate-adaptable plants that can provide a better yield to meet food demands. Climate change poses a major risk to food security as the world faces frequent floods, droughts, heat waves, and the emergence of new invasive pests and diseases. Novel genomic and genetic approaches look promising to improve plant resilience under stress conditions and achieve sustainable crop improvements. Recent advances in sequencing technologies have facilitated the generation of a plethora of genomic resources in a variety of crop and plant species. With the increased availability of genomic and transcriptomic data, an increasing number of quantitative trait loci and candidate genes are being identified for their application in improving plant tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses. New approaches such as genomic selection and genomic-assisted breeding have been utilized to develop stress-tolerant cultivars in a variety of plant species. Furthermore, transgenics and rapidly evolving CRISPR technology offer great potential for plant improvement. This Research Topic aims to provide insights into the molecular and genetic factors involved in imparting abiotic and biotic stress tolerance in plants and their application in enhancing plant adaptation to these stress conditions. To review the progress in this research category, we invite manuscripts related to the plant responses to abiotic/biotic stresses and trait improvement through genomic selection, and transgenic or gene-editing approaches. Studies including physiological, biochemical, and molecular genetic analyses revealing the mechanisms involved in plant response to abiotic/biotic stresses are welcome. Topic editor Dr. Balaji Aravindhan Pandian is employed by Enko Chem Inc. All other Topic Editors declare no competing interests with regard to the Research Topic subject.

Download or read book Crop Ecology written by R. S. Loomis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-10-08 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is centred on the 'production processes' of crops and pastures - photosynthesis and use of water and nutrients in fields. The book is unique in its combination of great breadth and depth in its treatment of production processes and systems problems. The approach is explanatory and integrative, with a firm basis in environmental physics, soils, physiology, and morphology, in contrast to descriptive or reductionist approaches. Systems concepts are introduced early and expanded as the book proceeds, giving emphasis to quantitative approaches, to management strategies and tactics employed by farmers, and to environmental issues. The systems approach is brought together in the final chapters where production and nutrient cycling are analyzed, for example farms and problems in an uncertain future are considered. The book is based on courses taught by the authors in Australia and the United States and is designed for use as a text for an introductory course in crop ecology (advanced undergraduates and beginning post-graduate level). It is more than a text, however. Given the wide range of subjects, the authors have integrated reference and background material to create a 'stand-alone' reference work useful to a wide audience of agriculturalists.

Download or read book Yield Gains in Major U S Field Crops written by Stephen Smith and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When humankind began to save seed to plant for the next season, they did so hoping to secure a food supply for the future. With that came the inevitable question: Will it be enough? Scientists today are still asking that question. Our dependence on domesticated cultivated varieties has never been greater, even as increasing populations strain our resource base. This book provides a fascinating snapshot-in-time account of the productivity status of all major U.S. field crops. Each crop has a different story to tell. Plant breeding, biotechnology, and agronomy have shaped these stories. It is imperative that we learn from them to ensure continued productivity. The solution is long-term stewardship and the most effective use of our critical resources—water, soil, genetic resources, and human intellect.
