Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Photosynthesis It was with a clear recognition of the usefulness of reviews of this character that a Committee of the American Chemical Society recommended the publication of the two series of mono graphs under the auspices of the Society. Two rather distinct purposes are to be served by these mono graphs. The first purpose, whose fulfilment will probably render to chemists in general the most important service, is to present the knowledge available upon the chosen topic in a readable form, intelligible to those Whose activities may be along a wholly different line. Many chemists fail to realize how closely their investigations may be connected with other work which on the surface appears far afield from their own. These monographs will enable such men to form closer contact with the work of chemists in other lines of research. The second purpose is to promote research in the branch of science covered by the mono graph, by furnishing a well digested survey of the progress already made in that field and by pointing out directions in which investigation needs to be extended. To facilitate the attainment of this purpose, it is intended to include extended references to the literature, which will enable anyone interested to follow up the subject in more detail. If the literature is so voluminous that a complete bibliography is impracticable, a critical selection will be made of those papers which are most important. The publication of these books marks a distinct departure in the policy of the American Chemical Society inasmuch as it is a serious attempt to found an American chemical literature with out primary regard to commercial considerations. The success of the venture will depend in large part upon the measure of cooperation which can be secured in the preparation of books dealing adequately with topics of general interest; it is earnestly hoped, therefore, that every member of the various organizations in the chemical and allied industries will recognize the impor tance of the enterprise and take sufficient interest to justify it. Book Studies in Plant Respiration and Photosynthesis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Plant Respiration and Photosynthesis Classic Reprint written by Herman Augustus Spoehr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Plant Respiration and Photosynthesis The experiments on photosynthesis which were begun at the Desert Laboratory in Tucson, Arizona, about eight years ago yielded, among other things, the conclusion that prerequisite to an understanding of the nature of the energy transfer in photosynthesis was a more extensive knowledge of the metabolism of chlorophyllous organs. It became clear that, before attempting to follow the course of the synthesis Of carbohydrate material in illuminated leaves, it was essential to know more about the conditions governing the equilibria and mutual transformations Of the various groups of carbohydrates, quite independent of the photosynthetic process. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 813 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second International Congress on Photosynthesis Research took place in Stresa, Italy during June 24-29, 1971; two centuries after the discovery of Photosynthesis by Joseph Priestley in 1771. This important anniversary was celebrated at the Congress by a learned account of Priestley's life and fundamental discoveries given by Professor Robin HILL, F. R. S. Professor HILL's lecture opens the first of the three volumes which contains the contributions presented at the Congress. The manuscripts have been distributed into three volumes. Volume I con tains contributions in the areas of primary reactions and electron transport; Volume II ion transport and photophosphorylation, and Volume III carbon assimilation, regulatory phenomena, developmental aspects, and from the two special sessions of the Congress devoted to evolution and photorespiration. It is realized that this division is necessarily somewhat arbitrary since many contributions relate to more than one of the above mentioned titles. However, the large number of contributions (over 3000 typed pages) made it impossible to publish the proceedings in less than three volumes. The printing of these volumes and the organization of the Congress were made possible by a contribution from the Consigio Nazionale delle Ricerche of Italy. The generous support of the Istituto Lombardo Acca demia di Scienze e Lettere to the publication of these proceedings is gratefully acknowledged. The editors wish to express their appreciation to all the scientists who contributed the results of the investigations, for their coopera tion; and to Drs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquatic Photosynthesis is a comprehensive guide to understanding the evolution and ecology of photosynthesis in aquatic environments. This second edition, thoroughly revised to bring it up to date, describes how one of the most fundamental metabolic processes evolved and transformed the surface chemistry of the Earth. The book focuses on recent biochemical and biophysical advances and the molecular biological techniques that have made them possible. In ten chapters that are self-contained but that build upon information presented earlier, the book starts with a reductionist, biophysical description of the photosynthetic reactions. It then moves through biochemical and molecular biological patterns in aquatic photoautotrophs, physiological and ecological principles, and global biogeochemical cycles. The book considers applications to ecology, and refers to historical developments. It can be used as a primary text in a lecture course, or as a supplemental text in a survey course such as biological oceanography, limnology, or biogeochemistry.

  • ISBN : 1402032188
  • Pages : 853 pages

Download or read book Chlorophyll a Fluorescence written by G.C. Papageorgiou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-12 with total page 853 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chlorophyll a Fluorescence: A Signature of Photosynthesis highlights chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence as a convenient, non-invasive, highly sensitive, rapid and quantitative probe of oxygenic photosynthesis. Thirty-one chapters, authored by 58 international experts, provide a solid foundation of the basic theory, as well as of the application of the rich information contained in the Chl a fluorescence signal as it relates to photosynthesis and plant productivity. Although the primary photochemical reactions of photosynthesis are highly efficient, a small fraction of absorbed photons escapes as Chl fluorescence, and this fraction varies with metabolic state, providing a basis for monitoring quantitatively various processes of photosynthesis. The book explains the mechanisms with which plants defend themselves against environmental stresses (excessive light, extreme temperatures, drought, hyper-osmolarity, heavy metals and UV). It also includes discussion on fluorescence imaging of leaves and cells and the remote sensing of Chl fluorescence from terrestrial, airborne, and satellite bases. The book is intended for use by graduate students, beginning researchers and advanced undergraduates in the areas of integrative plant biology, cellular and molecular biology, plant biology, biochemistry, biophysics, plant physiology, global ecology and agriculture.

Book Photosynthesis Photobiochemistry and Photobiophysics

Download or read book Photosynthesis Photobiochemistry and Photobiophysics written by Bacon Ke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-03-31 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photosynthesis: Photobiochemistry and Photobiophysics is the first single-authored book in the Advances in Photosynthesis Series. It provides an overview of the light reactions and electron transfers in both oxygenic and anoxygenic photosynthesis. The scope of the book is characterized by the time frame in which the light reactions and the subsequent electron transfers take place, namely between =10sup-12/sup and =10-3 second. The book is divided into five parts: An Overview; Bacterial Photosynthesis; Photosystem II & Oxygen Evolution; Photosystem I; and Proton Transport and Photophosphorylation. In discussing the structure and function of various protein complexes, we begin with an introductory chapter, followed by chapters on light-harvesting complexes, the primary electron donors and the primary electron acceptors, and finally the secondary electron donors. The discussion on electron acceptors is presented in the order of their discovery to convey a sense of history, in parallel with the advancement in instrumentation of increasing time resolution. The book includes a large number of stereo pictures showing the three-dimensional structure of various photosynthetic proteins, which can be easily viewed with unaided eyes. This book is designed to be used as a textbook in a graduate or upper-division undergraduate course in photosynthesis, photobiology, plant physiology, biochemistry, and biophysics; it is equally suitable as a resource book for students, teachers, and researchers in the areas of molecular and cellular biology, integrative biology, microbiology, and plant biology.

Download or read book Photosynthesis written by M. D. Hatch and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Biochemistry of Plants: A Comprehensive Treatise, Volume 8: Photosynthesis provides information pertinent to the biochemistry of photosynthesis. This book focuses on the photosynthesis of higher plants but some consideration is given to algal and bacterial photosynthesis. Organized into 11 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the excitation of a light-harvesting pigment by an absorbed light quantum. This text then discusses the evidence to support the hypothesis that chlorophyll–protein complexes are represented at the supramolecular level by some of the intramembranous particles seen on chloroplast freeze-fracture faces. Other chapters consider the absorption of light energy by accessory pigments and transferred to chlorophyll in the blue-green, red, and brown algae. This book discusses as well that certain cyanobacteria respond to the color of the incident light by altering their biliprotein composition. The final chapter deals with dark reaction of photosynthesis. This book is a valuable resource for plant biochemists, neurobiochemists, molecular biologists, senior graduate students, and research workers.
