Book The Burden of Choice

Download or read book The Burden of Choice written by Jonathan Cohn and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Burden of Choice examines how recommendations for products, media, news, romantic partners, and even cosmetic surgery operations are produced and experienced online. Fundamentally concerned with how the recommendation has come to serve as a form of control that frames a contemporary American as heteronormative, white, and well off, this book asserts that the industries that use these automated recommendations tend to ignore and obscure all other identities in the service of making the type of affluence they are selling appear commonplace. Focusing on the period from the mid-1990s to approximately 2010 (while this technology was still novel), Jonathan Cohn argues that automated recommendations and algorithms are far from natural, neutral, or benevolent. Instead, they shape and are shaped by changing conceptions of gender, sexuality, race, and class. With its cultural studies and humanities-driven methodologies focused on close readings, historical research, and qualitative analysis, The Burden of Choice models a promising avenue for the study of algorithms and culture.

Book Ugly Beauty

Download or read book Ugly Beauty written by Ruth Brandon and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to a combination of business savvy, breathtaking chutzpah, and lucky timing, Helena Rubinstein managed to transform herself from a poor Polish emigrant to the world's first self-made female tycoon. She went from selling homemade "Crème Valaze" out of her house in Australia to becoming an international cosmetics magnate. Tiny and plump, wearing extravagant jewels and spiked heels, she was a fixture of upper-crust New York for many years. She was larger than life, and never took no for an answer: when she was refused from a New York City apartment on the grounds that she was Jewish, she went ahead and bought the whole building and promptly moved in. The story of Eugène Schueller and L'Oréal begins in 1907, in a dingy working-class part of Paris, where a young Schueller sat at his family's kitchen table trying to develop the first harmless artificial hair dye. The tale of how L'Oréal went from that point to the world's largest cosmetics company is fascinating and full of intrigue, with a little of everything: fascist assassins, bitter unmaskings, political scandals. In 1988, although Schueller and Rubinstein had long since passed away, their worlds collided when L'Oréal bought Rubinstein's company — leading to a series of scandals that threw a new and sinister light on L'Oréal. For starters, Rubinstein was Jewish, but Schueller and many other top L'Oréal executives had been active Nazi collaborators. What came to light threatened the reputations of some of France's most powerful men - up to and including its president. This is a powerful, dramatic, and largely untold story about the ugly truth behind a beauty empire.

Book excerpt: Interest in the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze has grown exponentially over the last two decades, and, in recent years, Asian scholars have come to see rich possibilities for developing his thought within an Asian context. In this, the first collection devoted to Deleuze and Asia, several Asian and Western scholars explore Deleuzian themes and concepts in areas ranging from philosophy and religion to new media studies, cultural studies, theater, architecture, painting, film, and literature. Topics addressed include: onto-aesthetics in Deleuze and Taoism; Deleuzian univocity of being and the Original Enlightenment Thought of Mahāyāna Buddhism; Leibnizian and Bergsonian influences in Deleuze and the Japanese philosopher Nishida; Deleuze’s theater of philosophy and its parallels in Beijing Opera, Kathikali Dance Drama and Nō Theater; Deleuze’s concept of the fold and sonic space in Asian architecture; the fold and visual space in Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji”; the Walkman, contemporary Japanese anomie and Deleuzian nomadism; Deleuzian “faciality” and the cultural politics of facial images in Korean beauty pageants; the 2011 Taiwanese film Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale and the Deleuzian concepts of the minor and the people to come; Deleuzian haecceities, affects and fragmented spaces in the films of Lou Ye and Wong Kar-wai; the Nu Shu writing system – the only writing system developed exclusively by women – and the formation of a female people to come; and Deleuzian minor literature and its relationship to globalization, nationalism and regionalism in Asian literature. These essays map new directions in East-West research that promise to invigorate Asian studies and disclose hitherto unrecognized dimensions of Deleuze’s thought.

Book Beauty Women s Bodies and the Law

Download or read book Beauty Women s Bodies and the Law written by Jocelynne A. Scutt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes a woman’s body beautiful? Plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery and non-surgical interventions such as Botox are changing women’s bodies physically and affecting cultural notions and expectations of what it means to be a woman. Yet where does the law stand? Is the renovation of women’s bodies legal? This book explores a range of topics, including: whether shape-changing by surgical and non-surgical means is ‘really’ what women want; the question of legal intervention when operations, injections and other methods go wrong; the impact of consent determinations on whether women can or cannot freely seek changes to their body structure; and the role which culture and social expectations play in women’s decision-making. Taking a legal perspective on the vast range of ‘beauty’ interventions available to women, Scutt discusses women’s perceptions of body and beauty, pressures on women to conform to ‘idealised’ notions of the perfect woman’s body, and outcomes of legal actions including those taken by individual women who are unhappy with results, as well as those launched against companies trading in products advertised as safe and for women’s benefit. Beauty, Women’s Bodies and the Law will appeal to readers with an interest in women’s and gender studies, law, and cultural studies.

Book Made Up

    Book Details:
  • Author : Martha Laham
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2020-10-10
  • ISBN : 1538138050
  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book Made Up written by Martha Laham and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-10 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Made Up exposes the multibillion-dollar beauty industry that promotes unrealistic beauty standards through a market basket of advertising tricks, techniques, and technologies. Cosmetics magnate Charles Revson, a founder of Revlon, was quoted as saying, "In the factory, we make cosmetics. In the store, we sell hope." This pioneering entrepreneur, who built an empire on the foundation of nail polish, captured the unvarnished truth about the beauty business in a single metaphor: hope in a jar. Made Up: How the Beauty Industry Manipulates Consumers, Preys on Women’s Insecurities, and Promotes Unattainable Beauty Standards is a thorough examination of innovative, and often controversial, advertising practices used by beauty companies to persuade consumers, mainly women, to buy discretionary goods like cosmetics and scents. These approaches are clearly working: the average American woman will spend around $300,000 on facial products alone during her lifetime. This revealing book traces the evolution of the global beauty industry, discovers what makes beauty consumers tick, explores the persistence and pervasiveness of the feminine beauty ideal, and investigates the myth-making power of beauty advertising. It also examines stereotypical portrayals of women in beauty ads, looks at celebrity beauty endorsements, and dissects the “looks industry.” Made Upuncovers the reality behind an Elysian world of fantasy and romance created by beauty brands that won’t tell women the truth about beauty.
