Book Photosensitisers in Biomedicine

Download or read book Photosensitisers in Biomedicine written by Mark Wainwright and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-03-25 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photosensitisers in Biomedicine offers clear and comprehensive coverage of the many different photosensitiser types, including information on their many applications that now extend beyond anticancer therapy. These applications now include photoantimicrobial treatments not only in microbial disease, but also in the microbial resistance to conventional drugs, which is circumvented by photomicrobial action. The application of photoantimicrobials in biological fluids is also of considerable importance in the current era of HIV and is discussed in the book. This text offers the most up-to-date coverage of photodynamic therapy including information on how photosensitisers have evolved within the field of cancer therapy and more recently antimicrobial research. There are few books on the market that take the approach of this text, as many are either conference based or focus on the chemistry of photosensitisers. Photosensitisers in Biomedicine is clearly defined into three distinct parts beginning with a clear introduction to the various types of photosensitisers. The book then moves on to discuss the chemistry of photosensitisers and closes with their numerous applications, for example, photodynamic therapy, photodiagnosis, photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) and other non-oncological applications such as optical, arterial plaques and stents.

Book Resistance to Photodynamic Therapy in Cancer

Download or read book Resistance to Photodynamic Therapy in Cancer written by Valentina Rapozzi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a comprehensive review of resistance induced by photodynamic therapy (PDT) in tumor cells. Understanding the underlying mechanisms in this process leads to the improvement of therapeutic modality, in combination with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy. Photodynamic therapy is a minimally invasive therapeutic procedure that can exert a selective or preferential cytotoxic activity toward malignant cells. The procedure involves administration of an intrinsically non-toxic photosensitizing agent (PS) followed by irradiation at a wavelength corresponding to a visible absorption band of the sensitizer. In the presence of oxygen, a series of events lead to direct tumor cell death, damage to the microvasculature, and induction of a local inflammatory reaction. Studies reveal that PDT can be curative, particularly in early stage tumors and this volume explores the potential of PDT, but also reveals strategic approaches to overcome resistance in tumor cells.

Book Chemical Aspects of Photodynamic Therapy

Download or read book Chemical Aspects of Photodynamic Therapy written by Raymond Bonnett and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-08-07 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a ground breaking medical technique which uses lasers to activate light-sensitive chemicals to treat cancer and other diseases without resorting to surgery. For the first time, Chemical Aspects of Photodynamic Therapy introduces in an accessible way the physics, chemistry and biology behind the technique. This highly authoritative account of the account of the rapidly developing field of PDT explores its chemical basis, while presenting information in its historical context. Haematoporphyrin derivative is considered in detail, together with the new 'second generation' photosensitisers , such as chlorins, bacteriochlorins and phthalocyanines. Photosensitisers which are currently in clinical trials are compared and reference is made to new light sources, biological and clinical findings, and prospects for future developments. This book is essential reading for new students and researchers alike studying PDT. It is recommended particularly for photochemists, as well as photobiologists and clinicians. About the author Raymond Bonnett was born in London in 1931. After a spell in the air force, he graduated from Imperial College, going on to Cambridge to research under Alexander Todd and A.W. Johnson and then to Harvard to work with R.B. Woodward. He is now Scotia Research Professor of Chemistry at Queen Mary and Wesfield College, University of London, UK. He has been active in research on photosensitisers for 25 years and has published over 200 papers on the chemistry of porphyrins and related compounds.

  • Release : 2020-08-13
  • ISBN : 1000144615
  • Pages : 641 pages

Download or read book Conn s Biological Stains written by Richard Horobin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-08-13 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published on behalf of the Biological Stain Commission For 75 years Conn's Biological Stains has been a standard reference for all those who used dyes and colorants in the biological and medical sciences. This long awaited tenth edition appears 25 years after R.D. Lillie's ninth and has been completely rewritten to reflect the increase in range of uses. Although the staining of microscopical preparations continues to expand the uses of dyes and fluorochromes now extend far beyond this traditional application. This book provides the first critical overview of the whole range of low molecular weight fluorescent probes, outside the catalogue literature. The first ten chapters are essays, by leading experts, on the important aspects of colorants and their uses. Most of the remainder of the book consists of descriptions by Dr Horobin of the properties and recent applications of hundreds of individual compounds, in about twenty chemical classes. The last chapter reviews the procedures employed at the Biological Stain Commission's laboratory to assay and test dyes and certify them as suitable for their intended applications.
