This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The \fx\ meson with mass $1281.0 \pm 0.8$~MeV/$c^2$ and width $18.4 \pm 1.4$~MeV (FWHM) was measured for the first time in photoproduction from a proton target using CLAS at Jefferson Lab. Differential cross sections were obtained via the $\eta\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$, $K^+\bar{K}^0\pi^-$, and $K^-K^0\pi^+$ decay channels from threshold up to a center-of-mass energy of 2.8~GeV. The mass, width, and an amplitude analysis of the $\eta\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ final-state Dalitz distribution are consistent with the axial-vector $J^P=1^+$ \fx\ identity, rather than the pseudoscalar $0^-$ \etax. The production mechanism is more consistent with $s$-channel decay of a high-mass $N^*$ state, and not with $t$-channel meson exchange. Decays to $\eta\pi\pi$ go dominantly via the intermediate $a_0^\pm(980)\pi^\mp$ states, with the branching ratio $\Gamma(a_0\pi \text{\small{ (no }} \bar{K} K\text{\small{)}}) / \Gamma(\eta\pi\pi \text{\small{ (all)}}) = 0.74\pm0.09$. The branching ratios $\Gamma(K \bar{K} \pi)/\Gamma(\eta\pi\pi) = 0.216\pm0.033$ and $\Gamma(\gamma\rho^0)/\Gamma(\eta\pi\pi) = 0.047\pm0.018$ were also obtained. The first is in agreement with previous data for the \fx, while the latter is lower than the world average.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the written versions of invited lectures presented at the 29th "Internationale Universitatswochen fiir Kernphysik" in Schladming, Aus tria, in March 1990. The generous support of our sponsors, the Austrian Ministry of Science and Research, the Government of Styria, and others, made it possible to invite expert lecturers. In choosing the topics of the course we have tried to select some of the currently most fiercely debated aspects of quantum field theory. It is a pleasure for us to thank all the speakers for their excellent presentations and their efforts in preparing the lecture notes. After the school the lecture notes were revised by the authors and partly rewritten ~n '!EX. We are also indebted to Mrs. Neuhold for the careful typing of those notes which we did not receive in '!EX. Graz, Austria H. Mitter July 1990 W. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of review articles on the most outstanding topics in heavy flavour physics. All the authors have made significant contributions to this field. The book reviews in detail the theoretical structure of heavy flavour physics within the Standard Model and its confrontation with existing experimental data. The physics of the top quark and of the Higgs play an important role in this volume. Beginning with radiative electroweak corrections and their impressive tests at LEP and hadron colliders, the book summarizes the present status of quark mixing, CP violation and rare decays. The dynamics of exclusive D- and B-meson decays, the τ-lepton physics and the newly discovered heavy quark symmetries are discussed in detail. The impact of strong interactions on weak decays is clearly visible in many articles. The physics of heavy flavours at LEP, HERA and hadron colliders constitutes an important part of the book. Another significant topic is the possible role of heavy flavours in the spontaneous symmetry breaking of gauge symmetries. Finally the most recent advances in lattice calculations of the properties of heavy flavours and the lattice studies of the dynamics of heavy flavours are presented.

Book Surface Science Techniques

Download or read book Surface Science Techniques written by J.M. Walls and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a comprehensive and up to the minute review of the techniques used to determine the nature and composition of surfaces. Originally published as a special issue of the Pergamon journal Vacuum, it comprises a carefully edited collection of chapters written by specialists in each of the techniques and includes coverage of the electron and ion spectroscopies, as well as the atom-imaging methods such as the atom probe field ion microscope and the scanning tunnelling microscope. Surface science is an important area of study since the outermost surface layers play a crucial role in processses such as catalysis, adhesion, wear, and corrosion, with applications in metallurgy, thin films and surface coatings, the chemicals and polymer industries, and microelectronics, to name a few. This book covers those techniques used routinely for surface analysis as well as those employed for more fundamental scientific studies. It will be of interest to university research workers, graduate students and to industrial scientists solving practical problems.

Book Rethinking the Irish Diaspora

Download or read book Rethinking the Irish Diaspora written by Johanne Devlin Trew and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides scholarly perspectives on a range of timely concerns in Irish diaspora studies. It offers a focal point for fresh interchanges and theoretical insights on questions of identity, Irishness, historiography and the academy’s role in all of these. In doing so, it chimes with the significant public debates on Irish and Irish emigrant identities that have emerged from Ireland’s The Gathering initiative (2013) and that continue to reverberate throughout the Decade of Centenaries (2012-2023) in Ireland, North and South. In ten chapters of new research on key areas of concern in this field, the book sustains a conversation centred on three core questions: what is diaspora in the Irish context and who does it include/exclude? What is the view of Ireland and Northern Ireland from the diaspora? How can new perspectives in the academy engage with a more rigorous and probing theorisation of these concerns? This thought-provoking work will appeal to students and scholars of history, geography, literature, sociology, tourism studies and Irish studies.

Book Quarks And Colliders Proceedings Of The Tenth Lake Louise Winter Institute

Download or read book Quarks And Colliders Proceedings Of The Tenth Lake Louise Winter Institute written by Alan Astbury and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-08-22 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book originated in a series of lectures given at Liverpool in 2013 to a group that included postgraduate and undergraduate students and staff of the Physics Department. They followed from two very successful lectures given to the undergraduate Physical Society. It seemed that there was a very large interest among the students in investigating the foundations of physics in a way that was never done in physics courses, and was not available in books or other outlets. However, the idea was to create a framework in which students (and interested staff) could develop their own thinking relative to the ideas in the lectures. So it was important to create both conceptual and mathematical structures on the issues that are important at this level. The book has the right sort of technical content to allow for this development, but doesn't lose itself in excessive details. The ideal use for this book would be on postgraduate courses where students would be encouraged to think about the foundations in a way that is well beyond the superficial. However, a course on aspects of this material would also be valuable at the undergraduate level, where students could be stimulated into believing that creative thinking could solve the problems that emerge when we confront foundational problems.
