Book excerpt: Photophysiology, Volume I: General Principles: Action of Light on Plants focuses on the fundamental mechanisms by which non-ionizing radiations affect the living cell at the molecular level when such analysis is possible. The selection first offers information on the development of photochemistry, including photosynthesis, photoaxis, vision, phototropism, diurnal rhythms and visible light, and medical uses of ultraviolet light. The text then takes a look at the principles of photochemistry and photochemical methods and electron spin resonance and its application to photophysiology. The publication examines the photochemical action of light on macromolecules, absorption spectra, spectrophotometry, and action spectra, and photochemical reactions of photosynthesis. Discussions focus on photosynthetic phosphorylation, measurement and interpretation of action spectra, instrumentation for absorption spectra, and inactivation of viruses by visible and ultraviolet light. The selection is a valuable source of information for readers interested in photophysiology.

Book Sensing and Making Sense

Download or read book Sensing and Making Sense written by Graziele Lautenschlaeger and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a genealogy of photosensitive elements in media devices and artworks, this book investigates three dichotomies that impoverish debates and proposals in media art: material/immaterial, organic/machinic, and theory/practice. It combines historical and analytical approaches, through new materialism, media archaeology, cultural techniques and second-order cybernetics. Known media stories are reframed from an alternative perspective, elucidating photosensitivity as a metonymy to provide guidelines to art students, artists, curators and theoreticians - especially those who are committed to critical views of scientific and technological knowledge in aesthetic experimentations.

Book Nanomaterials for Photodynamic Therapy

Download or read book Nanomaterials for Photodynamic Therapy written by Prashant Kesharwani and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-14 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanomaterials for Photodynamic Therapy takes a unique approach to this area, with a key focus on the use of nanomaterials and nanocarriers for photodynamic therapy (PDT). The book introduces the history and mechanism of action behind PDT, covering the variety of sensitizers currently available. Subsequent chapters review existing and emerging nanomaterials for PDT, including hydrogel nanocomposites, fullerenes, quantum dots, polymeric micelles, and more. Challenges and translational aspects of PDT are also discussed, touching on the issues and hindrances of drug resistant cancers. The book bridges the gap between the physics and clinical aspects of PDT, offering a unique nanomaterials-focused perspective. This book will prove useful for materials scientists, biomedical engineers, electrical and optical engineers, and pharmaceutical scientists interested in cancer treatment. - Reviews a broad range of nanomaterials for PDT, such as graphene oxide, dendrimers, solid lipid nanoparticles, and more - Provides a helpful introduction to the history and mechanism of action behind PDT - Discusses challenges in clinical translational, particularly in drug-resistant cancers

Download or read book Light and Plant Growth written by J.W. Hart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many recent works on the topic of light and plant growth. These have not only been written by experts, but are also, in the main, written for experts (or, at least, for those who already have a fair understanding of the subject). This book has its origins in a six-week course in plant photophysiology, and its aim is to provide an introduction to the subject at an advanced undergraduate level. The imagined audience is simply a student who has asked the questions: In what ways does light affect plant growth, and how does it do it? The book is limited to aspects of photomorphogenesis. Photo synthesis is only considered where its pigments impinge on photo morphogenic investigations, or where its processes provide illustrative examples of particular interactions between light and biological material. Chapter 1 gives a general account of the various ways in which light affects plant development, and introduces topics which are subsequently covered in greater detail. In all the chapters, are special topic 'boxes', consisting of squared-off sections of text. These are simply devices for presenting explanatory background material, or material that I myself find particularly intriguing.
